I hired Ronald Tomlins to file a petition to the court for my ex not securing the correct life insurance policy and to be reimbursed for my legal fees by my ex. During our initial phone consultation, he said the email communications with my ex would be submitted with the petition as evidence. When he eventually submitted the petition he did not include the evidence and said we had to wait until after the court appearance when my ex was found to be in contempt of court. When my ex was found to be in contempt of court Ronald said we had to wait to submit evidence after my ex secured the correct life insurance policy. During the next court appearance reimbursement for my legal fees was brought up and a hearing ensued on the spot. The evidence was not submitted to the court and I was not awarded reimbursement. I filed an objection to the findings and the judge who reviewed the case said that no evidence of my emails were submitted to the court so he couldn't reverse the finding of the court. So Ronald Tomlins misled me into believing he would share the numerous emails that were evidence my ex willfully did not obtain the correct life insurance policy.

Watch out for this guy’s billing practices. The retainer agreement that he had me sign says he bills in 6-minute increments, but he doesn’t honor that. He inflated the time he worked on my case and up-charged every interaction to 15 minutes. He charged me 15 minutes for every single email that I sent and every single response that he sent back, even if the emails contained one sentence. When I asked him to reconsider and charge me for the actual time he spent on my case, he flatly refused. When I asked him why he charged in 15 minute increments instead of 6 he said it was “standard practice”. I checked with other lawyers who said he should be honoring his retainer agreement. They also said most of the emails that he charged me for would never even show up on their invoices. These billing practices are misleading and dishonest. BEWARE!! And don’t send emails unless you absolutely have to.

Mr. Tomlins is a highly professional and dedicated lawyer. His astute council led to the facilitation of both of my misdemeanor charges being reduced to a single violation and a fine, which given the circumstances that I was in, was the most ideal outcome I could hope for; no permanent record, no jail time, no community service, 1 and done... and he made it happen. Being convicted of a misdemeanor would have reeked havoc on my life, my family and my career. Thank you again for fighting so diligently for me Mr. Tomlins, and as you said, sometimes good people make stupid decisions..

I hate writing reviews; I mean, I REALLY HATE writing them. When you find a professional that stands out from the crowd, however, it's only appropriate to give praise as deserved. Steve has been extremely patient throughout my legal journey and continues to provide sound advise and creative solutions for a difficult situation. What's most impressive, however, is his ability to think quickly on his feet, using his wit, skills (the man is absurdly smart and could write a book based on his in-depth knowledge and experience), and appropriately-timed sarcasm to deliver the message in a compelling and easily-understandable way. If you're looking for someone who will sugar-coat things, Steve isn't your guy, though. We've had a lot of tough conversations and haven't always seen the case the same way. He's objective, taking the emotions out of the legal issues, yet still somehow seems to be more empathetic than most. Why do I mention this? If you want good representation, you can't work with someone who always tells you what you want to hear. Instead, you need someone in your camp who will help you through the emotions of the situation but more than that, keep you in the game; Steve is that person.

Steven Klein came highly recommended to me by numerous people when I found myself in a child custody matter with my ex husband. I contacted him right away as my court appearance was in the very near future and he was accomodating and eager to take on my case. Obviously anything involving court and family matters is a very stressful and emotional time. But using Steve and knowing that I was going to be represented by such a confidant and determined attorney eased my stress and worry. He and his firm responded to every email/call or text promptly. I was very happy with the results and I am now using him again for a separate matter. I would highly recommend him to anyone. When you find yourself in any legal situation and you want the best representation, he’s the guy for the job.

Steven Klein is an excellent attorney. I came to him for a consultation regarding a divorce. He came highly recommended and I soon saw why. Mr Klein was extremely professional and knowledgeable all while making you feel like family. Any questions or concerns that I had he answered with ease. During my divorce he was extremely thorough and informed me of everything each step of the way. He had a great rapport with all of his staff as well as the staff st the court. I would highly recommend him for anyone in search of an honest, reliable, and trustworthy attorney.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Poughkeepsie, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
