Jay Meyers was referred to me by another bankruptcy lawyer who did not want to take on my case (too complicated, of course). Jay came very highly recommended. No one ever plans to get into financial problems and become financially desperate but life happens. Those who experience this know that it is both physically and mentally crippling - the amount of stress can become unbearable. It really feels like the end of the world. Never in a million years did I think I would ever have to file for bankruptcy but if I was ever going to file for bankruptcy boy am I glad that Jay was my lawyer. He really is the whole package! Jay has over 30 years of experience in his field, is fairly priced, and well-intentioned. I am one of those people that has an annoying amount of questions because I need to understand what and why I am doing things - Jay was always available to answer my many questions, always patient with me, explained everything to me in a way that simplified complicated things, and never made me feel like I was a burden. More importantly, he really helped me in my path to psychological recovery - I went from feeling like a failure (I felt like I failed my wife and kids), feeling embarrassed of myself, and from a nervous wreck to someone who was still struggling financially but was mentally healthier. Jay gave me reassurance and he also gave me hope! He helped me understand that there is a life past all of this and that he would help me get to a better place. AND HE DID! Before I share the results of my case below, please don't kid yourselves. Yes - at the end of the day the results are what everyone remembers but let me tell you the journey to the results is equally as important. Jay's confidence, knowledge and experience with other clients really shows - he helped me keep it together throughout this extremely challenging process and reassured me along every step of the way. Jay helped me believe that everything was going to be okay. Think of Jay as the bankruptcy doctor - he'll save your financial life and do so with a 5-star bedside manner. Thanks to Jay's experience, knowledge, and dedication the results of my case are better than I ever hoped for! I will forever be grateful to Jay for turning a dark, stressful and scary situation into an future with hope and opportunity for better. Jay helped me leave my mistakes behind me and start off with a clean slate to do right by my family and myself. I hope that you never find yourselves in a situation to require Jay's services but in the case that you do HAVE ZERO DOUBT that Jay is the man you want by your side. He is worth every penny and more!!!

Cons
1
Lack of responsiveness and attention to client's case
“At the first court appearance he did not appear, his supposed partner did not appear but an attorney he got from another attorney who knew nothing about this case which led to a default and allowed the plaintiff to immediately request to schedule a sale date to foreclose.”
2
Potential for misrepresentation and unexpected costs
“He misrepresented me, was unprofessional and has put me in the worst position imaginable... The other option of which I asked him about initially what the cost would be, he said he wasn't worried because we would work it out. Yet now he requires a payment of over $20,000 before he would file or do anything else to protect me.”

She is honest, very well educated in this field and answered all of my questions. I just felt comfortable with her compared to the other people in this field. She gets the job done.

Mr. Brown helped my family in a certain important way. In 2023, my father had died and the money that was to be paid out was being withheld due to some clerical error on the side of the insurance company. The insurance company then tried to sue my mother for misinformation that they believed my father gave them. Plus the fact that they were still taking money to pay into the insurance policy months after my father died. Mr. Brown was not only able to get the money my family is entitled to, bit also managed to get us an interest payment on top of that. Put a time that he was hired all the way to the time that he was able to get this case settled what's the matter of just 6 weeks. He does meticulous work and has an eye for detail.

We talked to several attorneys in the NYC area but felt the most comfortable with Donna Oliva. She is very professional, patient, has great communication skills, and she promptly responded to all of our calls and emails. We never felt we were just another one of her clients. Although she handled a number of matters for us simultaneously, she rarely had to refresh her memory about the specific details of any matter, since her attention to detail and recollection are superb. Her legal knowledge, research and writing skills also are excellent, as well, and she is extremely persistent when following up on things with other lawyers. I would highly recommend Ms. Oliva to anyone.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What challenges do you foresee in my case?
Understanding potential obstacles helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to resolve my legal issue?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Staten Island, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
