Mr. Araujo did a fantastic job on my Chapter 13. He laid out the rules, dispelled several mistaken notions I had about bankruptcy, and put together a plan that worked for me and was acceptable for the court and trustee. 5 years later and I'm done, without any issues. Thanks again!

I met with Ted and ask him to do the impossible with my finances. I was in extreme distress with no positive end in sight. He immediately went to work and started to analyze my situation taking everything into account. He gathered information from me about my finances, asked many questions and at the end of all of it put my best case forward. He was friendly, courteous, and very precise with every detail about my claim and to my utmost amazement he hit a grand slam out of the park for me. This lawyer is a most hire lawyer. He is very passionate about what he does and helping his clients. He will go the extra mile for you and put a win in your column.

Ted was awesome, let me tell you why. I truly was not looking forward to filing bankruptcy. I was embarrassed to even walk in the office. I felt like I was admitting that, at almost 40 years old, I didn't know how to manage my finances and I was taking the easy way out. I had just gotten divorced and much, if not all, of my debt had been racked up by my now ex-wife. I was nervous. I didn't want to do it. I had great credit history my whole life up until shortly before my divorce. Then, I spoke with Ted. Very cool guy, knows what he's doing, very direct and to-the-point, funny, and had a way to make me relax. He explained every detail of bankruptcy to me in a way that I could easily understand and, believe me, there is a lot that I didn't know. By the end of my consultation with Ted, I felt completely comfortable with making the decision to file, and I'm happy that I did. Ted makes the filing process quick and easy. He basically has a checklist of the documents he needs you to provide to him. Once you're able to give him all of the required credit card statements, bank statements, medical bills, etc., he plugs away at it. So, the faster you get him the documents, the faster he can start your filing. You need to go through a class or two online that give you some good information about bankruptcy and managing your finances in the future. Before you know it, Ted has you set up with a date for the hearing. I went to my hearing, they ask a few questions, and then you walk out without any more stress on your shoulders. No more worries about how you're going to catch up on past due bills. And, as Ted explains very well, it's not because you took the easy way out...it's because you used your rights as an American citizen...rights that were given to you by our nation's forefathers who knew full well even then that people would need protection in this type of situation. Ted was awesome and I mean that sincerely. He answered all of my questions, thoroughly, even when I asked them a second time. My advice would be to make sure you take good notes, write down all of the advice he gives you, and write down all of the answers he gives you to your questions. I could say to just do what he tells you to do almost without question because he's been doing this for a while and he knows what you want and how you need to do it. If anyone were to ask me who I'd recommend for a bankruptcy attorney, there is no doubt...I would recomment Ted Araujo over and over and over again. Plus, his office is pretty sweet. Check him out. Believe me, you'll be glad you did.

Attorney Coyle is by far one of the most dedicated and thorough Counsilors in the business! He spent countless hours researching my case and finding complimentary arguments to back up his position. "Andy" met with me as often as I needed to, to help me understand every step in the appeal process. His availability extended to 24/7 email correspondence, countless telephone calls if I had questions, and in person meetings as well. Attorney Coyle exudes confidence and professionalism when he's in court, making him a very great choice for representation in trial and any sort of legal presentation really. This man made me feel like he cared about justice in my favor. He represented me as if it were his own case he was appealing. I would hire him again and again should I ever need his services. Thank you for everything Counsilor! You're the best!

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Syracuse, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
