I don't generally trust lawyers, but Brian really won my trust as he worked exceptionally hard to help me win my case. And the final cost was very reasonable. He's basically an upstanding guy who does what he says and knows what he is doing. I highly recommend him and he is my ongoing attorney as far as I'm concerned.

I have known Brian Higbie to be a thoughtful, responsible, trustworthy, knowledgeable and kind person and lawyer. When working with him as my lawyer he was easy to work with, listened to my needs, responded with clarity and kindness and acted promptly and skillfully. His efforts succeeded with positive results. I would trust him with anything I needed to use a lawyer for.

I got into a spot of trouble with the Westchester County Police in 2009 and when I needed a lawyer I found Mr. Higbie online. The entire legal process was very new to me but he was very accommodating in explaining how things worked and what the likely outcome would be. He kept me informed and went to bat for me. He got the charges (which were pretty serious) significantly reduced to a few fines. Other than being very professional he is a cool guy, not the pompous, sleazy "lawyer" type. If you need a lawyer who is totally hoenst and can work with you to get it done, Higbie is your man.

Mr. Higbie helped me on two separate occasions. He was up front and honest with me and didn't make any false promises. He let me know up front my chances of winning - and he delivered. I will definitely use Brian Higbie again and would recommend him to anyone in need of legal representation for a variety of matters and situations that require professional help. This dude is the real deal -- he's not a hack lawyer with a freshly pressed suit trying to squeeze a buck out of you. Genuine nice hard-working guy. So if you are on the fence selecting a lawyer, jump on down and give Mr. Higbie a call --- you won't regret it.

Thanks to Mr. Brown, our first home buying process ended up being a much more pleasant experience than anticipated. Needless to say, if I ever plan to buy or sell another property, I would definitely go with Mr. Brown again, and I would recommend him in a heartbeat to anyone who is looking for representation. He knows his business and he is very good at it. I could not be happier with the services I received from Tyrone Brown. He is extremely efficient and professional. He was responsive to my phone calls and emails and always available to answer questions.

I was arrested twice for DV cases in which my wife never supported the DA. But they insisted of going to trial without her. John was with me from the very beginning. It would be a lie if I say I had utmost confidence on him. But after waiting patiently for 10 months, he eventually got both my cases dismissed. I am forever grateful to him. I wish him a long life. GOD bless you JOHN.

I was referred to Khader Law to assist me with closing on my home. He made me feel comfortable from the moment I stepped into his office. Purchasing a home was very intimidating. However, Mike walked me through the whole process and was very straightforward. He took his time to make sure I understood all the documents. I highly recommend using their service.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Yonkers, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
