Divorce is an emotionally stressful process and in my case the fear of the unknown made it worse. When I decided to file for divorce I wanted to hire the best attorney because I had absolutely no experience in the matter so I got online and read reviews. When I hired Ms. Bowen she worked for a highly recommended firm in Dallas with an office in Denton. During my divorce she left the firm and I continued with her because she already had all my information. I assumed that if she had been part of such a reputable firm she was probably good. Looking back, I consider this decision to have been the biggest and worst mistake I made throughout my divorce process. On the day of mediation my ex-husbands attorney made most of the decisions. I was so emotionally distraught that there were times I asked Ms. Bowen what I should do. But is it not expected for an attorney to guide and give the most beneficial advice. He’s inventory and appraisal was done a month after mine so he increased the amount owned on his credit cards. And as a result of not being advised to have my home appraised before mediation, I had to give him $10,000 more than it was worth. My name was continuously misspelled. I don’t have a common name but I was charged by the minute for any contact and time spent on paperwork so the least I expected was the correct spelling of my name. When they drafted the divorce decree and sent it to the opposing counsel she made corrections to at least half of the document. Aside from the grammatical corrections, she made it more specific regarding care of the children and of course all in favor of her client.
