Scott has helped me since 1999 on a variety of legal issues including: - formation of corporations including corporate charters, shareholder agreements, employment agreements and ISO plans - contracts including sales of equity in privately held companies, consulting agreement - taxes questions where my CPA required opinion of an attorney - estate planning - help navigate legal disputes such as breach of contract and reach settlement before actual litigation (he has referred me to other counsel if I were to proceed with litigation) Scott is a great all around legal resource and is the best place to start with most legal questions.

Scott has been my company's trusted legal advisor since our inception over 12 years ago and before that in several other ventures. He offers sound advice and legal service on issues including employment matters, corporate governance, contract negotiation and tax compliance. He has always been incredibly responsive and succinct in helping us work through our legal matters. There are very few of our advisors who have lasted the test of time like Scott. I couldn't recommend him highly enough. COO of $100 million US services company

Running a business and dealing with all of the legal requirements/contracts/buy-sell agreements/buyouts, etc. without great legal representation is risky business. Having a professional (expert) on your side, someone you can trust who works at the speed of business ( efficiently ) while guiding us through complex and difficult situations, ensuring we have the information needed to make the best decisions possible, is paramount to the success of our business. With the guidance provided by Kevin, to our organization, I know our growth and future are in good hands. Kevin has handled many major legal cases for us including the buyout of a partner, relationships with new partners, advice on MSA agreements with our largest customers while providing advice on employee issues, and other crucial situations for our business. I don't know how I ran a business for so many years without the guidance of someone like Kevin, in hindsight, doing so was a big mistake. I sleep much better at night knowing that he is one of our key team members! We have total trust in his advice and guidance in all legal matters.

FYI-- we are a technical consulting and advisory firm. Especially for clients with some understanding of the legal ramifications of their contracts, Mr. Learned and his firm offer an extremely cost effective and agile set of legal services. We have been using this firm for about six months and we have enjoyed the rapid turn around, flexibility of access, and deep knowledge they offer. One minor caveat-- I believe it is the responsibility of every client to READ THEIR OWN DOCUMENTS and not COMPLETELY rely on legal counsel for their review. Your legal representation knows your business and your potential liabilities, but not well enough that you should allow legal reviews to take place without your personal and detailed review of terms and legal language. With that said, Mr. Learned and his firm have provided excellent services for us!

Elizabeth Ho is an excellent choice - Thorough and knowledgeable, and spends time to listen to your concerns and questions. I chose this lawyer after reviewing about 6 other lawyers in the Washington, DC area. Elizabeth Ho helped us process my marriage based green card application and wills. She responded to my very first phone inquiry by spending quite a bit of time answering my questions and describing the application process in detail. Right after, she followed up with lists of documents to gather prior to seeing her in person. Ms. Ho was very careful in reviewing my green card application and providing advice as to what happens next. In addition, she offered to write our wills, which I meant to do for a while. This was perfect timing, because wills serve a very strong evidence of bona fide relationship. Importantly, once our application was submitted, Elizabeth kept following up on our application status , letting us know every time she receives a notice from government offices. This was very helpful since at one point, my mail stopped coming and I was afraid to miss my OPT notices. This was also especially appreciated because our case was already completed, and Ms. Ho was providing these updates solely as a courtesy. I have already receive my green card. Excellent choice - I highly recommend this lawyer.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Reston, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
