I hired Hanna And Rudd in March,2016.That being said,I received the Email on the seal,yesterday.As for my License, I have been driving with a License, Cleared from Illinois since Nov.2017. There are but a hand full of people in my life that I can say have changed the course of my life. Deborah Moss is one of these people. I was placed under arrest for DUI after being caught sleeping in my vehicle and since I had a prior DUI at a minimum I was facing a couple of weeks in jail at a maximum upwards of 9 months. I was terrified, I had just graduated law school and was about to take the Florida Bar and having this arrest on the books absolutely devastated all of my future plans that I had worked so hard towards.
Since this was not my first time hiring an attorney my wife and I began an intense process of seeking counsel through interviewing lawyers, reading reviews, word of mouth, you name it. After some time we came across Mrs. Moss and we were impressed by everything we saw and heard. From the beginning during our initial consultation she was extremely honest with me as it pertained to what I was facing. She told me it would be an uphill battle but that she would be there every step of the way (and boy was she!!)
After over a year of attempting to strike a deal with the state we were left with no other choice but to set a date for trial by jury. If you have never been through such an experience I can tell you it is terrifying. The entire process can be quite overwhelming and there are so many factors that can contribute to a verdict either going your way or against you. Mrs. Moss knows this, and she made sure that I was a part of every decision that we made as it related to my defense and when it was something I did not understand she always took the time to explain it to me, I always knew what was going on with my case and what I needed to be doing thanks to her.
As for the trial all I can say is wow! Her years of experience shined through during every part of the trial. Whether it was jury selection or her taking apart a police officers testimony on the stand she was nothing short of remarkable. Watching her during the trial brought a comfort to me that I had not felt since this all started, I knew that nobody could defend me better that she could. She fought for me as if I was her own family, and when your going up against the government which has unlimited resources to hire expert witnesses, subpoena officers, etc. you need someone who is going to take the matter personally and that was exactly what Mrs. Moss did. After two grueling days of testimony, exhibits, 10+ witness, the matter went to the jury and within 15 minutes the verdict was back, Not Guilty.
Mrs. Moss is the consummate professional not only would I use her again in the future but I would recommend her to my closest loved ones. If you are looking for an attorney that is going to fight on your behalf with the same vigor that you would defend yourself with, then Deborah Moss is the lawyer you have been looking for. Whether the matter is working itself through the pre-trial process when attempting to strike a deal with the state or when there is no choice but to go to trial Deborah Moss is an expert in the entire legal process. Given how stressful the entire legal process can be you will always have the satisfaction of knowing that you have the best of the best in your corner. Seriously. I called around to others in the area- having never been arrested, in jail or anything like this before, I didn't know what to expect. The first person I called was rude, he had been practicing DUI cases in Monterey for many years, and I am sure he was knowledgeable, but I didn't trust him the ways I trusted Jamey; right from the start, he was kind and very professional. He seems like a good guy too, a straight-talker who is down to earth, and smart.
Anyhow, that was my initial impression and my gut was right! This was one, if not, the worst thing to ever happen to me. I needed someone to walk me through the journey and I got more than I expected.
So my story – I was knocked out. I was on vacation in Canery Row and parked my car on the street set a 2 hour timer on my phone and went to my favorite restaurant in the area. Time passed, plans changed, and the timer went off, I booked a hotel nearby. As I went to move the rental car one tenth of the mile away, in to valet, something hit the back of my car. I come to learn someone on a skateboard lost control of their skateboard and it hit the back of the rental car. I didn't know what had happened, for all I knew, another car could have hit the back of my car. So I got out to see what happened and a large man came charging at me, I turned around to get back in the car, and that's when I was knocked out. This all happened within seconds of getting out to see if anyone was hurt based off the bang I heard, in the middle of bumper to bumper traffic, on Canery Row.
Minutes later, police and ambulance came, witnesses described that the man had run away. The police officer was a complete jerk, newer on the force(Jamey tells me) – no field sobriety test was given. They arrived when I was on the sidewalk, bleeding and in shock at what happened. Instead of being treated like a victim, I was handcuffed because they smelt whiskey on my breath. I spent the next 48 hours in a holding cell, it was like what I imagine hell to be like, very sad. Since the officer was horrible, he failed to follow correct procedure. Jamey reviewed the body footage and advised the Judge to do so too. Because of this insight Jamey had, the DMV through out the case entirely. Typically, this sort of thing carries 1 year mandatory suspension of license.
I had a BAC of .089, which is right at the bottom of the legal limit. Jamey told me from day one that he would push for me to get a reduction of the charge to a “Wet Reckless”(carries lower fines and not a DUI charge).
One 12 hour class later and approximately $1000 in fines, I have moved on with my life.
Everytime I thought of that evening, I would get irate. I actually have had to stop thinking about it entirely in order to maintain myself and move on in a healthy way. Sometime after the 3rd phone call or so(I have lived in a different state for over a decade), Jamey would encourage me to not allow the things we couldn't change, to effect us today. That wisdom and care from this professional, went a very long way. I needed that perspective, he cared enough about his client to provide it and care for their mental state.
That's what I will think of when I think back to getting knocked out, with no justice and being jailed for 2 days, due to an error I made of parking on the street. The kindness of my attorney, what a great outcome for a miserable period of time.

I was arrested in March for DUI on a bicycle, Battery against a Law Enforcement Officer x 2, Resisting arrest with violence, Disorderly Intoxication, and some other charges added on to that. I was abusing alcohol to cope with personal issues and landed myself in serious trouble. I was pulled over initially for not having a bike light and acted like an animal with the police. I hired a Criminal Defense Lawyer in Jacksonville and was instructed to complete 50 hours of community service, court approved counseling, get character reference letters, go to DUI school, take the Victim Impact Panel with MADD, and write an apology letter. I was also released on ROR with a SCRAM ankle monitor for measuring alcohol, which I paid for weekly. Communication was limited with my initial attorney and I attributed it a lot to COVID-19, he wasn't working at his office etc. But the communication never picked up. Months passed, and everytime I would talk with his assistant she would just assure me that he is just "waiting on the prosecutor to get back to him" or "waiting on the Discovery". In November, almost 8 months after my arrest, I had a virtual court appearance with my then attorney. The judge was so perplexed as to why this was taking so long. My attorney at the time appeared disorganized and said he had just received my Discovery. After the virtual meeting he called me and said the state had offered me a deal of pleading guilty to DUI and everything else would be dropped. I said "How can you offer me this when you have not even reviewed my Discovery and said that there was still video evidence to be ordered that you have not even seen!" I hung up the phone and started to cry. I was angry and told my family that I am firing my lawyer and hiring a new one. This time, I did my research. I found Tori and felt pretty confident in giving her a call. This was the best decision I could have made. Immediately she answered the phone herself and consulted with me right then and there. She agreed to take on my case that day and the next day we met in person to go over everything (safely, masks worn of course). In 5 weeks she did what my lawyer couldn't have and never even would have accomplished in 8 months. She negotiated with the state and defended me and showed them the efforts that I have been making to better my life and abstain from alcohol. Last Thursday I had my case and I was charged with Disorderly Intoxication and Resisting Arrest. 6 months probation and 2 AA classes a week. No DUI. No Felonies. No year long probation. I could not believe it. The outcome was better than I ever would have imagined. Also that same day she got the court order to finally have my ankle SCRAM removed. Derek is the kindest man you’ll ever meet. He honest and humble and he genuinely wants to help people. I was facing 3 Felonies that I was 100% sure I couldn’t get out of. There were several factors that I considered when hiring an attorney to represent me for a DUI charge, which included being local, having extensive experiences with DUI cases, understanding his fees, and most importantly, treating me with dignity. Mr. Ewin previously worked for the Contra Costa County DA office, and this experience and his connections was necessary given that I do not reside in the Bay Area. I decided to contact Mr. Ewin after doing extensive research about where he went to law school (UC Davis), types of cases he represents, and reading many of the online reviews. Several consistent themes emerged from his online reviews that prompted me to consult him: he is personable, aggressive, well connected, knowledgeable, and handles cases with the utmost professionalism and dignity.
During consultation over the phone, Mr. Ewin explained in layman’s terms the paralleled process of the criminal court and DMV administrative hearing for DUI cases. He then interviewed me about my personal background and ascertained the facts of my case, which led to his advice about the best way to proceed. After this consultation, I decided to hire Mr. Ewin.
The first thing he did was schedule the DMV administrative hearing to coincide with my court date, which allowed me to drive for three months legally. Next, he represented me at the initial court hearing that I was unable to attend. After the initial court hearing, Mr. Ewin negotiated with the DA’s office to reduce the charges. It is necessary to understand that Mr. Ewin was upfront and never promised me an outcome, but suggested based on his knowledge and experience he would aggressively work with the DA’s office to get my charges reduced.
Mr. Ewin prepared me for the second court hearing by walking me through the documents and what I should expect. He made sure I understood the legal ramifications of my options. The morning of my second court case, Mr. Ewin was able to move my case to the front of the docket even though scheduled for a later time. While in court, I understood how important it was to have hired Mr. Ewin. Other folks in my situation were meeting their court-appointed attorneys for the first time. In fact, I was astonished to bear witness to one court-appointed attorney publicly call her clients by their names, introduce herself, and briefly talk to them about their cases for the first time. Also, while in court, Mr. Ewin called DMV to see if they had made a decision about my case.
Mr. Ewin successfully got my DUI charges reduced to wet reckless. As a result, I paid lower fines, and the court did not suspend my license. Although I did not win the DMV administrative hearing (from what I have read and confirmed by Mr. Ewin only 9 – 10% of cases are won), Mr. Ewin aggressively argued my case based on a discrepancy he found in the police report.
I highly recommend Mr. Ewin if you are seeking a talented, aggressive, well-connected, and personable attorney to represent you in a DUI case.
