My wife and I wanted an attorney that was both highly experienced in immigration law but more importantly addressed the personal needs for our case. With over a thousand cases personally handle by him through 20+ years of expeirience, bi-lingual, he proved out perfectly for our needs, that is to gain a green card for my wife and step son. There is no secretary to go through. He was never further than an email way. Great "hands on", experienced attorney to guide you through a very complex system with rules changing daily.

I called Navdeep on a very short notice, explained her my situation in a few minutes on the phone. She wrote down all the info as we talked. She answered every single question I had asked. She did educate me on the pros and cons of my situation, this was above and beyond what I had asked for. She took initiative and went as far as researching for the official USCIS publications related to my situation and shared it over email. A very thorough job done. She marked the relevant clauses with a hiliting marker and also explained the same to me with reference to my situation. I would definitely go seek her help whenever I need anything on Immigration issues.

My wife is Japanese and we wanted her to be able to stay in the US. Mr. Taki helped us through the whole process. It took some time, but everything went very smoothly. We were able to get a Green Card for her in about 9 months. Mr. Taki was able to do everything that was needed. He did a great job. If you are Japanese and need help with visa or immigration issues, I would highly recommend Mr. Taki.

Lara is incredibly knowledgeable about all of the paperwork and processes, she was able to tell us everything we needed to know instantly. She was very informative and supportive throughout the entire process, even reassuring us when questions or confusions arose about our process. She is evidently very dedicated to her clients and very passionate about her work, she made us feel like we were her number one priority. Marie helped me obtain my citizenship and it was a pleasure having her by my side, literally, as she accompanied me to the naturalization interview. From the very first free consultation, she proved to be honest and helpful, suggesting ways for me to save money. And throughout the entire process, she continued to be highly professional, thorough, on top of everything. Also, her prices are fair. I'm grateful that she could help me obtain my citizenship quickly. I would recommend her to anyone needing legal representation.

All I had to do was be patient and wait for the courts to calender my matter. It was all done at a reasonable price. All communication was excellent. His knowledge and expertise in the Bay Area court system was very useful. He is very professional and works for a very respected well versed and experienced law firm. My matter was minor in comparison to most, but still hindering me in a background check over a minor offense. He understood my dilemma and had empathy.

I am a small business owner. I retained Attorney Chen to set up my business in California. Attorney Chen provided a legal consultation to me, and helped me choose the right corporate form. She advised me that LLC was the best way to control a two-owner family business, and I accepted her advice. Attorney Chen charged a reasonable legal fee for business incorporation and she responded to my inquiries promptly. I have recommended her legal service to many entrepreneurs who also wanted to open a new office in California.

Noha handled my Bankruptcy this past year 2016 . She explained the different types of bankruptcy and costs associated with them before I proceeded after calling her firm. During the total process she notified me about what was to happen and kept things in order before appearing in court. They use a very efficient system to keep track of records and paperwork. It was a very smooth filing of my bankruptcy and helped discharge all of my debts which qualified. I would recommend her to anyone needing legal help in a bankruptcy filing. She was very honest and positive about my case.

Joseph was extremely helpful throughout the my entire EB-5 process by working with me to obtain correct "source of funds" documentation and explaining to me the requirements of the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Visa Program (and how USCIS adjudicates specific issues). Joseph always kept me updated regarding the status of my immigration applications with USCIS and the status of my EB-5 investment project. He clearly cares about my family and our immigration status, but he also was a good listener and hard-worker. I highly recommend Joseph

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
