We engaged Vernadette for advice a particularly painful situation we were experiencing. We paid her the retainer and she successfully guided us through the minefield. With her help, we decided on a course of action and moved on agreeing that we would call her if something else came up with this case. Nothing did and three years later she came back to us offering a refund on our unused retainer. I was floored by the exception show of integrity. I would highly recommend Vernadette to anyone interested in a smart, compassionate and reputable lawyer.

Scott has been very competent, compassionate, and efficient. He wants to be helpful and he's made sure I understand the legal portion of my case whenever I have contact with him. No question is stupid, or ignored. I really liked the fact that he wasn't afraid to admit he needed to verify some things before he could answer. He's very detailed and made sure all the i's were dotted, and t's were crossed so there was no delay. My biggest relief was his compassionate and human approach to my situation. I didn't feel like I was 'just a case number' as is rumored most attorneys treat their clients.

When it comes to my son, I want the very best for him. So when his mother and I needed a court to settle our differences I was worried that like most fathers in Indiana, I would get the raw end of the deal. But instead the team at H&Z understood my needs, they know the law and have relationships within the legal community that were VITAL to getting the fair treatment I deserve as a loving father, from the court. Hollingsworth and Zivits, and their staff have the experience, reputation and a proven track record you absolutely need when going to court is unavoidable! I would recommend their services to anyone trying to navigate their case in a family court room!!

Sandra Myers has been my attorney for several years now and has helped me and my son tremendously. She has always gone above and beyond, and shown a high level of commitment to helping us. In addition, she conducts herself with such a high degree of integrity and class...I am so happy I found her years ago. Recently Alexandra Myers took over my case and represented me throughout the course of a trial. She was very organized, focused and diligent, and showed enthusiasm that inspired me to stay optimistic throughout the entire process. She was also extremely resourceful in gathering information and prepping for the trial. In the courtroom she too conducted herself with professionalism and grace, and to say that I am grateful to have her as my attorney is an understatement. I would absolutely recommend both Sandra and Alexandra. They are smart, knowledgeable, dedicated attorneys who provide their clients with the best advice and service!

I was apprehensive at first but Mr. Varchetto came highly recommended from another attorney I know very well so I thought I would trust. He came into my case after two lawyers before him wasted time and money getting no where. When he first met the appointed guardian et litem for my kids they greeted each other with a hug. She applauded my choice at new counsel which really put me at ease. Mr. Varchetto resolved the case in the shortest time possible and kept me emotionally in check during the process.... which helped me to make the best decisions based on getting divorced rather then serving my personal vendetta for my ex that I might have pursued otherwise. I felt he genuinely cared about me and my case... and put me at ease when things got really stressful. I thought his rates were very fair particularly with someone with his experience.

I had a chance to work opposite Sara a few years ago. I have worked with many lawyers in the past, but Sara stands out as the one of most professional, ethical, knowledgeable, and intelligent lawyers out there. She is sharp, quick on her feet, and she puts her client best interest above anything else. She is a fierce advocate and at the same time a fair and reasonable negotiator. It was my pleasure to work with her and I highly recommend her. She's not only a top-notch lawyer but also a great human being. She is the one who gives lawyers a good name. You can't go wrong with Sara.

Darren Miller did an excellent job at representing me against a case of a vendor that wanted to charge me thousands of dollars for work not done (a broken construction contract due to incompetence). Not only did he address the other lawyer in a very professional way, he asked good questions and did not give up. I won my case. I have a rule, that my attorney has to be very intelligent and competent and Darren Miller fits the bill. I would use him for larger cases as well.

Look no further, Mr. William Falik is the lawyer for you! After receiving a speeding ticket, I was referred to Mr. Falik for legal consultation and his colleagues also spoke very highly of him. Mr. Falik is very professional, knowledgeable, and always there when you call. He offered clear guidance as I took my ticket to court and instilled confidence from the start. The outcome? Withhold of adjudication, no points, no driver improvement course, and I only paid the ticket. Phenomenal work! Thank you Mr. Falik. Continue to help those in your community!

I had a highly contested divorce and Joe successfully turned my case around and was able to keep focused on the things that were most important to me. He always had my back. In that way, he changed my life. His vast knowledge of the intricacies of the law and experience within the legal system and knowledge of the judges benefited me immensely. I would highly recommend Joe.

Teri is very knowledgeable about the law and rights of the non-custodial parent. Unmarried custody and visitation case where parents did not get along. She went over and beyond the call of duty and ended up reaching a settlement out of court with other party involved. Our best interest as well as the child's was taken into consideration. Spending time with my child makes it all worth while not to mention both of us as parents now get along for our child's best interest.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
