After 25 years of marriage (2 physician household), 2 mortgages and houses, furniture, jewelry, a software start up and investments, I received 40 thousand dollars and my retirement (which came out of my paycheck). I ended up paying for 518,000 dollars of my spouse’s personal debt. When I asked why I had to pay for this the opposing attorney shot me down and Christie said nothing. She later sent me an email stating that she suggested not paying for this debt and said that I said I didn’t want the money. She stated that I said I didn’t want 518,000 dollars. My spouse got the house (2,,000,000 dollars), all payments toward principle (1.4 million dollars), all monies spent upgrading the house after initial purchase (over 200,000 dollars), all jewelry (except my moms engagement ring) all furniture, country club membership, paintings, portraits of children, car. As a final insult she told me to be thankful that I was able to keep my retirement (my spouse kept their’s and makes almost twice as much as I do). I am also required to pay 4000 dollars per month for child support. All information in this is factual and can be documented. I made a mistake hiring her. She prioritized getting along and giving in over advocating for her client.

Sarah was unorganized and not well versed in divorce law. At the one meeting I called to find out her status since I hadn't heard back from her, it was clear she hadn't looked at my documents and then tried to share that I hadn't sent them all over, despite her emailing me earlier to say that she had gotten them. She also gave me bad financial advice which I thankfully did not take which would have impacted my finances in relation to Wisconsin property laws.

My dad and I had some issues we wanted to resolve. We hired Michael to assist us. I sent him a list of things I wanted to address, and after our 3 hour call, he ended up sending us his decision via email. I felt like none of my issues I asked him to address were even discussed in the email, and furthermore, it seemed like he pretended I didn't even ask those. I called him up to inquire about that, and right away he said that we would have to pay him more money and then hung up. Michael was of no use for us, we wasted our money and time. Michael seems like the kind of lawyer that just wants to take your money and not really provide any value, I recommend you find someone else.

He didn't even inform me of when my case was going in front of the judge. Extremely disapointed. Gave me bad advice and told me I'd be paid first. Was incorrect about that. Overall bad experience.

As acting Senior Counsel for the Washington State Bar Association Ms. Matsumoto wrote me saying that an investigator would be assigned my case and would contact me. No one contacted me as my investigator - so I waited. Later I recieved her decision, without investigation, other than her reading my complaint and corresponding w/ the attorneys I was complaining about. I appealed and asked to speak with the Review Board but she said that I wasn't allowed. So much for an alleged unbiased grienance process. Its the fox guarding the chicken coop.

I ended my relationship with him feeling worse then when I started and in a worse legal and financial situation. He showed up to court at the last minute, making me feel alone and unsupported. He showed up to an online zoom arbitration with a professional mediator in a sweatshirt, which I thought looked sloppy and unprofessional. He yelled at me for being upset that a legal decision went against me, making me feel shamed and judged for feeling upset in very stressful circumstances. I tried to put the whole affair behind me, so we settled my account, I paid a final bill and tried to focus on moving forward. I was unfortunately contacted after we ended our relationship and he told me that he "forgot" to send me a bill that I had to pay.

No matter if she thought she was helping or thought she was helping the case, she hurt it! She always delayed things and ALWAYS had other client cases that seemed to over schedule eachother in court or depositions (so she said.) If her assistant couldn't handle it, she should hire one that could.

Hired Mr. Whitton for our son in 2011. He was ridiculous to get ahold of, never returned phone calls, did not keep us up to date on the happenings with his case. Plus the man is pompous as they come. Would NEVER recommend him!

He should of been disbarred years ago. The SIPC Trustee and myself through my counsel sued him years ago and we settled for his policy limits. I would have been better off hiring my "dog". Do to his egregious malpractice I lost my company of over 20 years, all my securities licenses and I had to take personal bankruptcy. I had "no" customer complaints prior to retaining Berliner. Stay away from this guy. He's bad news.

I would strongly discourage anyone from hiring Susan Gallagher. I retained her to work on a child support modification and custody issue. When we first met, she charged me $800 for an initial consult. She said that she was finishing up one case and was taking a short vacation but would get to work on my case immediately after that. After two months, I had heard nothing so I called Susan. It took another two weeks to get a meeting, and she remembered little about our initial consultation and we had to start over. At that point, she swore at me and criticized me for the way I had handled past events. I realized then that I had made a mistake and terminated her retainer agreement. Subsequently, she charged me to copy my file, even though she was instructed not to and was no longer working on my case. She has refused to refund the balance of my retainer for those copying costs. Working with Susan Gallagher was a terrible experience and a waste of money.

I hired Brett to handle my fiancee's custody case. He was a complete disaster in and outside the court. He was ill prepared for court and got destroyed by the deputy commissioner. He kept telling us no matter what happens we will be before the judge in a week. After we lost custody of our daughter to her father we paid him even more money to handle the appeal. He took the money and filed a half ass appeal. He then proceeded to say he was to busy and could not handle our case forcing me to find a new lawyer. To top it all off his files were incomplete and it cost me 3500 to have my new lawyer complete the file. I only wish I could give him less than one stat.

Goldstein has a large number of cases on the docket in Poughkeepsie at any given time. He churns his clients through with the least amount of work possible. He gives no attention to any given case,he just counts on volume for money. He was not responsive to any contact I attempted,in fact he kept important court dates from me. His work is sloppy at best, and I found him to be lacking in basic knowledge . Find another attorney to serve your needs.

I have worked with many attorneys and I wouldn't hire this guy to wash my car let alone represent my legal interests. When you ask a question he makes up an answer instead of telling you he needs to research it. He says "uh" every other word and clearly needs a few classes in English, as well as 3 more years in law school.

Pohl was the hearing Officer on a case involving a Police Officer with a clean work history. Pohl recommended termination over the miscalculation of 2 hours of comp time that was never received or used. The officer was never the subject of any prior discplinary action and had several commendations. The decision he issued was overturned in Supreme Court, where the Judge noted it was the worst case of injustice he has ever seen. The officer was re-instated and resigned from the department. In my opinion Pohl lacks integrity and I DO NOT recommend him for anything.

Jerry will tell you that he works for you. That’s the first lie. Everything in your case is predicated on how little he will do, not do as he is asked within the law, and take your retainer and get this, want more money to do his job. He refused to acquire evidence that would have cleared my name from the asst DA. With nearly $2000 left of my retainer Jerry basically told me to go home like a nice little girl because if I anger the court with my legal request the court could throw me in jail. He then wanted to charge me $600 when there was nearly two grand on my account which he has not earned.

I hired Steve for the creation of legal documents that my company needed. I gave plenty of time, notice, details, and provided a deadline. I followed up with him a couple of times. Two days after the deadline, I did not hear from him nor did I receive my documents. I called him and he ignored it, and then put in writing that he didn't do the work because he elected to work on other things that were a higher priority (aka he blew off my documents to make more money on a different client). I told him that we were done and I took my business elsewhere.

Paid this guy 1k of a 1500 retainer to file paperwork in order to be heard in a court room. Not only did he NOT tell me he doesn't work those kinds of cases he took it on like he knew what he was doing. He ended up having to call other lawyers, while in my presence, asked them how to go about filing the correct paper work, which paperwork was correct, and who he needed to talk to. After being told what to do by other attorneys he still managed to mess up the paper work, the order that the paper work was diled, All the while judging his client for the way he looks. He is a nice older man somewhat, but very incompetent and a waste of $1,000 that I can't get back and could have used for another attorney. I do not recommend this man for any legal problems what so ever. His actions cost me my case

I hired Mr. Williams back in 2019. He made it clear that he would let me know when I would incur fees that were larger than the original retainer. He never did He never did any work. I found that out from the opposing side. I have every email to prove correspondence of everything that transpired. When I confronted him in emil, he claimed that I did not want to pay for more services. He made sure to use up my 2400 retainer looking up laws that he should already know. i showed him the email from the creditor showing that he never contacted them. The creditor thought that I was lying about having an attorney. Unethical and arrogant.

I hired Mr. Wilkinson to represent me in a disputed probate case. He failed to take actions I directed him to take ,and instead spent an inordinate amount of time on insignificant issues, resulting in unnecessary hourly charges for him and the opposing attorney. He failed to present pertinent evidence about appeals court rulings on the ownership of a co-owned bank checking account, resulting in me losing over $14,000. His explanation for refusing to file one motion I directed him to file was that he had other cases before the same judge and was not going to file anything on my behalf that would make the judge angry. He then filed a motion to withdraw, leaving me without representation during a critical phase of the hearings.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

  1. Verify Their License:

Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.

Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.

Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
