My husband and I are in our lated 60s. It was important to us to put an estate plan in place and avoid probate. Jim Young was highly recommended by our financial advisor. Our initial consultation with Jim was very informative and we felt comfortable hiring him as our estate planning lawyer. We met Jim several times, had many discussions, and Jim presented us with several options to met our specific needs. Because this was a second marriage for my husband and I and we each had children and grandchildren from a previous marriage, our circumstances presented a more complex plan. Jim navigated us through this conversation and process with patience and thoughtfulness.

I have been a practicing Obstetrician/Gynecologist in St. Joseph, MO for over 30 years. In 2003, I was involved in a lawsuit surrounding an injury my patient incurred from hospital equipment while in the hospital. Ms. Brown was my defending attorney in that case. Ms. Brown demonstrated to me a wide grasp of the law; a respect for all aspects of a legal encounter; an honorable presence in the courtroom, and a tenacious attention to detail. She handled opposition witnesses and attorneys with respect. I have had the privilege to assist her in another legal encounter in which I served as a witness, and again, I observed a brilliant mind calmly at work, with a clear grasp of the essentials of the issues at hand. She also proved quick and agile in dealing with the ebb and flow in the courtroom. I highly respect her competence.

I cannot express how pleased I am with my experience with Bill Yates. My mother had a very complicated estate that came with difficult family members. With me living in New York, he handled the Massachusetts probate with ease and precision. Bill totally had my back and pressed on until the job was done. If you are looking for a reliable, intelligent and professional attorney who will advocate for your best interests, you need Bill Yates.

I have found Dennis to be one of the true "Good Guys" in the legal arena. I have used his office for several different issues and each time I had complete and total satisfaction with the service and expertise that has been shown to me and my family. He makes you feel at ease and is always willing to explain things in "plain English" I will continue to use his firm and recommend him to others as well.

After having several bad experiences with attorneys, a friend referred me to Daniel Kemmy. Daniel was up front with me and informed me that my inquiry wasn't his primary focus of law, but that he would do some research and follow up. We set a date to review his findings and he delivered. Not only did he come prepared with several documents summarizing the local municipal codes pertaining to our discussion, he spoke intelligently and confidently about a topic new to him. Daniel exhibited true professionalism, made himself available for questions, and provided valuable insight.

Fiona Van Dyck not only knows the law, but is the absolute best at explaining it so I can be confident in making all my family's estate planning decisions. And Fiona's responsiveness to client needs is off the charts! She actually called me back from her vacation last winter and immediately emailed me documents which I had unexpectedly needed for my bank. How many lawyers can you count on to do that? Fiona is the best lawyer you can count upon for anything because if she can't help you, she'll find someone who can. For example, both my accountant and financial planner were referrals from Fiona and I couldn't be happier!

I have reached out to Mark Natale on a number of occasions for consultation on multiple different issues. In addition to an immediate phone call, he was very quick to set up a meeting each time to discuss each scenario in person. His attention to detail is unrivaled. On every occasion Mark was very straight forward about my possible options, and gave me his personal recommendations. Each time we had a follow up he would either reinforce those initial recommendations or give further recommendations from other professionals he sought for insight. I greatly appreciated his effort to always seek the best possible outcome for myself, but also his veracity. Never has he been one to take the circuitous route when asked for his advice, and thankfully he has been able to give me invaluable opinions and instructions. I will continue to keep his business card in my wallet and his number on speed dial!

We found her to be very knowledgable, resourceful, responsive and sensitive to our needs.

Brianne represented me in a due process against my school district recently. I was most impressed with her kindness and compassion for her clients. Brianne always took the time to explain her position in my case to me every step of the way and always made me feel welcome to ask questions. She did a wonderful job in writing the legal documents in my case and was very knowledgeable of the laws. Once my hearing decision was issued, Brianne continues to watch over the implementation of it to ensure it is successful. I really owe her a great big thank you, Not just for winning my case for me, but for caring so much about me and my child as clients. Thanks Brianne!

Christine is a great counselor. I had a complicated case that involved division of the company with shared ownership between my ex-husband and I during our divorce. Within only a couple of days Christine new my case in details. Even if she was not participating in divorce hearing, she clearly explained to me all pros and cons of my case and wrote a letter to my divorce attorneys that precisely described the strategy during the hearing and strongly protected my interests. Also, I appreciate her great personality, as I felt her sincere desire to help me, and not just to perform her professional duty. Without any hesitation, I would recommend Christine to anyone who is looking for a strong legal advice.

She has excellent interpersonal skills and is one of those rare pros who makes you feel like you are her only client, even though you know better. Can't say enough!

I ran into an emergency with my mother and trying to get her on Medicaid and into a rehabilitation center after her fall last July. Close friends of ours recommended Vince Macri and that they had used him a few years back when they were in a similar situation. After meeting with Vince, who was experienced, professional and reasonable, I knew I had made the right decision. Vince treated us with the utmost respect and kindness. He treated mom as if she were his own mother and made this difficult step as smooth as possible. Oh behalf of the Broyden family, Thank you!

Larry helped me with a lot of issues I was having on my website both technical and legal and resolved many problems I was having on it. I run a small cosmetic surgery theme website. He's conversant in matters of intellectual property, legal threats (from doctors who members of my board relay poor outcomes) and even things having to do with technical issues of the website. I was having some problems with people pilfering my intellectual property and not giving me attribution. He solved the problem.

Anthony handled a DUI for my son On behalf of my insurance company. I was impressed that he could negotiate well with the other attorney that was obviously trying to promote the case as more serious than it was. He had the brains to cut the losses and protect my family and myself from any further litigation. He treated both myself and my son who got the D U I with respect. Took the time to personally meet and speak with my son a few times to get his side of the story even though my son was in jail.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
