This lawyer is simply the best in Cookeville. I called five other offices and they were quite rude to me. John gladly took my case. Thanks to him I now have a 5 year old boy.

I got to know Patty personally as a long time friend of one of my very good friend. She has represented several companies I have worked for and been a principal of in debt collection matters with impressive results in many cases...i.e. we got paid! She also represented me personally in a dispute with a shady landlord resulting in a favorable outcome.

I hired Bryan Garner and his team of five lawyers to work on an appellate brief for my client. His reputation as a top-notch writer is unquestionable, and I was interested to see it in practice. Blown away is all I can really say. His description of editorial consulting doesn't do it justice. It wasn't an "editing job" so much as a complete rewrite of the brief. Despite my initial skepticism during the process, the final production was impeccable--no-spin but persuasive, and above all winning. You've never experienced anything as intense as a round of serial editing in Garner's office. It is humbling but indisputably enlightening. It was a learning experience that I've put into practice in my group. We've made it a practice of reviewing some of Garner's edits on the brief we hired him on to use in our later work, hoping the genius will rub off on us. And squeezing out every last drop of goodness from that appellate masterpiece. This is one satisfied client, and I am eager to work with him again if I get a case that would interest him. The legal gods willing.

Very honest. After numerous attempts were made by Ms. Cromeens to get some satisfaction for me from the contractor we had engaged, her best advise was to take the money we were going to have to pay her to pursue a lawsuit and just fix our house. That is as honest as you can get. I have dealt with her and her firm on a business matter several years and now on this personal matter.

I first met Mitch at his office stacked high with boxes, papers, and books. He sat behind an old, big wooden desk. He started talking in a slow, deliberate, “Dime Box drawl”. My wife and I looked at each other and wondered what we had gotten ourselves into. A diploma hung on the wall behind him. I abruptly got up and walked behind him to see what it said. Whoa!! Mitchell Ray Bearden…..Rice University….With Honors. I sat back down and listened intently. That was 25 years ago. Since then, Mitch has helped us in so many ways for so many years. If two words describe him, those words would be “brilliant” and “available”. He’s a very smart, honest lawyer who’s always there when you need him. If Mitch has “got your back” then everything is going to be okay.

I earlier today spoke to Brad Linder of the Sawaya law firm. I am not a client. I actually have an attorney from a different law firm. I only called Sawyer about some questions I had that I did not feel my attorney was answering correctly. Brad was very professional and extremely helpful. Gave me every piece of information that I needed. He actually even told me that it would be in my best interest to stay with the attorney I had, as I would make less money if I acquired another attorney. I could not have asked for more. I give this law firm five stars, I would give more if possible.

Deirdre Carey Brown is one of the best attorney’s in the Houston area. Because attorney’s have different specialties I have had the misfortune of working with several other attorneys over the last few years. Working with them vs. working with Deirdre was like black and white. Others provided no communication, billing that was questionable and not easily understood, were unprofessional and therefore never had my trust. On the other hand, I trust Deirdre completely. She kept me constantly informed of each step of the long process we went through together, emailed very frequently with updates, provided detailed statements of charges and although has a very knowledgeable legal assistant, worked directly with me almost exclusively. I felt confident that she always “had my back.” Needless to say I highly recommend Deidre Carey Brown as your attorney.

Jeff has been my family's business attorney for more years than I like to admit. He has handled everything from setting up our corporate structure to some frivolous lawsuits that were filed against us and has always provided the highest level of service. I owe Jeff my highest gratitude for the personal care he has given my fathers business affairs as he became unable to handle them on his own and cannot imagine a more honest, trustworthy, skillful attorney that I would want to handle our legal affairs going forward.

I just wanted to say that I watched this attorney litigate a case online and was extremely impressed with their professionalism and expertise. She absolutely owned the case and came across exactly how you'd want your attorney to be. I haven't personally consulted with or retained Ms. Bryant, but you can tell a lot about an attorney by watching them litigate a difficult case (against pro se defendants who were the equivalent of keystone cops) for several hours on end. She remained patient, respectful and professional throughout. If I lived in Texas and needed a litigator, I know who I'd call, 100%! Amazing job, Ms. Korrie Duncan Bryant!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
