I retained Robert (Bob) Smith for post-employment contract related issue. My former employer was threatening to sue me and Bob was able to avoid a lawsuit being filed. Bob was professional, friendly, understanding, and above all exceptionally knowledgeable in the field of post-employment / restrictive covenants. At all times Bob acted in my best interests while explaining the reasons for his rationale and potential impacts for the various options I had at my disposal. I was thoroughly impressed by his prowess in this field. In fact, I was skeptical at first since I found his firm (Smith Eibeler LLC) via a google search. However, after speaking with him on the phone I knew he understood my issue and I retained him the same day I located him. I never looked back. At the end of the day Bob successfully mitigated a lawsuit being filed against me which was my highest priority. Bob brings the comfort of a small "home town" law firm with the expertise and professionalism of a "top 5" type worldwide firm. I highly recommend Bob Smith.

I first hired John Quirke in 1999 before I quit my job. He stood by my side through the non-compete litigation. We eventually won. Over the years he has helped with many employee issues including a case of employee theft. John came to my office to be there when we escorted the terminated employee out. This was above and beyond but made a horrible situation a little better. John maintains a do whatever it takes to protect his clients attitude. I highly recommend John for any employment related work.

Mr. Whiteside helped me when the owner of the home I was renting tried to evict me on false pretenses. He worked diligently to find that the eviction was unlawful and that the owner just wanted me out so that they could sell the property. He worked with the property management company that was forced to act on behalf of the actual owner to come to a peaceful resolution. After two letters to the owner and property management company pointing out the grounds for which they were trying to evict me were illegal and we would pursue further legal action, the situation was resolved and I am currently still residing in the home until the end of my lease.

I had a wrongful termination case and was on a short time table with the severance packet. Mr. Gould was one lawyer I found through my search that wanted to help and was not asking for money before telling me my options. This is a rarity these days! I appreciate the valuable advice, promptness and professionalism Mr. Gould demonstrated and highly recommend his services.

My Homeowners' Association (HOA) sent me letter indicating the were pursuing court actions to assess an outrageous fine for a sign posted in my property. The sign indicated 24 hours surveillance cameras monitoring activity and trespassers on the premisses may be prosecuted including the citing section; as required by law. My front lawn has various figurines, planted pots and lawn lights. The HOA argued the sign may be considered unfriendly or uninviting. They wanted me to remove my personal pots, figurines and statues from my front lawn. I contacted Nyoki Sacramento upon receipt of legal action from this major well known law firm representing many Bay Area HOAs. Within one to two months this matter was resolved to my satisfaction. Nyoki kept me continously involved and updated about the conference calls and negotiations. The end results were to my complete satisfaction, better than I expected, the assessment fee s were recinded. I received a letter of apology and also an agreement that the sign was deemed acceptable and everything in my from landscaping design was approved. Her fees were reasonable and her service was swift. The final setlement agreement also included a "gag order" (they could not disclose or discuss this matter again or such violation could result in legal action by me). I know serve as the President of this HOA Board of Directors. Great job Nyoki!

One of Attorney Khadder's CELA colleagues (a fellow attorney) highly recommended him. During the free consultation, Attorney Khadder took the time to understand my case, reviewing all of the relevant documents and weighing the pros and cons of various options. During this process, he really took the time to listen and empathize, even when I was rambling! Attorney Khadder followed through on all of his promises and ultimately obtained a positive result for me. I really appreciate how he communicated clearly at every stage of the case. If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of needing to contact an employment attorney, I would suggest giving Attorney Khadder a call.

The whole staff at Weldon &Rothman are extremely helpful always call back to answer any questions or concerns. Always good to have a lawyer who goes 100% My friends and family all asked, "Why did you hire a lawyer!?" Being that I am more than capable in legal matters. I said," Sometimes you need to let the "Lawyer" do the talking!" Morgan Jones is well spoken, especially in law. Wonderful demeanor easy to work with and will surely go to bat for you!! I was elated when she agreed to take my case. Very anxious about the outcome, since we were dealing with the Federal Govt. Ms. Jones made me feel secure and walked me thru the entire process. Unemployment law is tricky if you don't know. Many thank yous to you and your entire staff Ms. Jones!!!! I will certainly refer in the future.

Ms. Rubinoff represented me several years ago during an escalating employee/employer dispute with Patelco Credit Union. Her calm disposition put me at ease during a very frustating period. She asked excellent questions during the fact-finding stage. She pushed me to be candid where I was concerned that the truth might not help me. She provided me with a map for securing closure in my relationship with a former employer. I was immediately impressed with how quickly she responded to messages even if she was only advising me that she would be unavailable for a while. I was kept current on all communications between her office and the employer's attorneys. Ms. Rubinoff helped me to organize my thoughts and articulate my percieved harm. In addition she was able to help my then wife feel comfortable with the legal process as well. We did not walk away from the negotiations with large amounts of money and that never seemed to be her focus; we walked away with my dignity firmly in place having been represented in the most professional and aggressive way possible , given my individual circumstances.

The day I entered this office I knew I landed in the right place. I was wrongfully terminated because I refused to allow the Resort I worked for to garnish my wages by illegally changing my time records. I felt broken from this situation but once I met Jenna, Amber, Arleen and the whole team they made me feel like I had the support I needed to fight back for what was right. I never once felt the need to question their opinion, strategy or decision, they always took the time to listen and give their advice. The team at ZHE Law gave me confidence and worked hard In my case, I am happy to say my case was settled! The amount of work this team put in on my behalf was worth every penny. I hope to never need their assistance again but if I do they are definitely the team I will call. Thank You everyone at ZHE, you all are amazing and do great work.

GREAT LAWYER. Manages his clients well and keeps them well-informed of everything going on. He made sure I knew exactly what the worst-case and best-case scenarios were for my case, how much each would cost, and what the likelihood of all the possibilities were. This is INCREDIBLY USEFUL information when facing expensive legal decisions. No matter how complicated the matter is, speak with Lloyd Lee; I had a great experience with him and think that others will as well. It is always nice to find someone who you can trust to fight for you and your needs - he focuses on doing quality work for all of his clients (he did for me!). Trust is the name of the game when finding the right lawyer. I trust Lloyd Lee.

Anthony Pantoni was simply the most wonderful Attorney. He acted for me single-handedly, against a team of (19 !!), so called corporate high flyers (I am English, from the UK, and travelled to the US for trial). Anthony won my quite complicated case hands down, and achieved this, well prior to conclusion of the case (was settled during trial, in my favor).. He did so by very clearly, very dramatically, and very impressively, demonstrating to the opposition that there was no way he would not prevail, in my case. Indeed, he rather tortured the witnesses during depositions, and if you are fortunate enough to have him take your case, you will see all of this, for yourself. Tremendous.

Amir was the main attorney on my case at Protection Law Group. I have never had an advocate/attorney representing me before, and I didn't know what to expect. The attorneys at Protection Law Group came highly recommended from my brother who is a lawyer. I annoyed the heck out of Amir as I asked numerous questions and wanted to be assured of things along the way. The dude was always so direct, confidence, invested, and as it turned out in the end, absolutely right about every answer/move/strategy whatever. I didn't like it at the time, but he challenged me to be patient during certain times of the process and again, he was obviously proven correct. Another thing: Amir, Kim, and Heather (in order of time spent with me) prepared me thoroughly for certain parts of the process. This group, and all three aforementioned attorneys, especially Amir are highly recommended. I am confident that Amir will produce a very strong result if you have a case.

This attorney was assigned me in 2010 in my age discrimination case against an East Bay employer. For 6 months, we conferred on a weekly basis, to identify a full palette of discriminatory actions taken by my former employer. Mr. Darahan was attentive, thorough, & helped me think through the complex issues. Together, with the help of one of the partners in the law firm, we were able to get come to a satisfactory mediated settlement with said employer. I would not hesitate to recommend him to someone fighting an age-discrimination matter.

The employment lawyers at Stevens and McMillan were amazing! I originally found them on Yelp and because of their great reviews decided to call for some legal employee-employer advice on Sexual harassment in the workplace and wrongful termination cases. I didn't expect to speak with one of the lawyers initially but I did on my first call and give them HUGE points right there! Dan listened to my story with and he explained to me how the law would work in regards to my specific situation. He gave me several different scenarios of how it could play out the best possible source of action. The conversation took about 20 minutes, and at no charge I must add. I highly recommend Daniel and his firm Stevens & McMillan Employment Lawyers based on the care I received, the patience and thoughtful observation and constructive feedback. - Jeffery

Having already known Adam as a person, I was not surprised to find that he gives meaning and weight to the term “legal service.” Adam is very friendly, client-focused, and diligent. He has great knowledge of personal injury law and courtroom procedure, and is a professional through and through. Though I did not need full-fledged legal services, I would not hesitate to put a legal matter in Adam’s hands, and I would do so with confidence that I would fully understand and be satisfied with the outcome.

Brandon helped me through a very difficult time in my life. I was just fired from job, my bills were piling up, and fiancée had left me. When I chose to sue my employer for wrongful termination, Brandon devoted hours of time discussing my case with me. He evaluated all of my possible claims, and was very honest about the likelihood success. Brandon fought hard when the my former employer sought to discredit me, and fought even harder to show my supervisor's illegal motives. When time came to settle the case I felt well informed and vindicated.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
