I hired Denise Coleman to represent me in my personal injury case. She greatly helped me and made sure that I was taken care of throughout the legal process. She successfully settled my case and I walked away with my medical expenses paid and a nice amount of pain and suffering money!

Attorney Coleman failed to file a claim on time regarding my case. Her lack of professionalism caused me my day in court. She promised to pay all expenses incurred including my medical bills and personal compensation owed to me. I've since retained another attorney and she has even ignored communicating with him. I caution anyone thinking of engaging with her as she also does not carry malpractice insurance for instances like my own. If she had, her insurance company would have been involved in her misguided deeds. Failing to file a claim is inexcusable.

Took over my case from another lawyer that left the firm she worked for. Treated me like a left over, not totally committing herself to my case. Postponed settlement meeting a few days in order to bump up her percentage to a higher ammount resulting in more funds for her and her firm and less for her client. Her clients intrests are not above her own. Very knowledgable regarding employment law and harassment and discrimination.

Unprofessional and total waste of thousands of dollars.. Multiple court dates and almost worse off then before retaining Miranda. Barely anything that was discussed over phone and emails (which you get charged big $$ for) oh and also discussed on court days with Miranda and opposing counsel, did not get put in judgement worded properly and or not included so now I'm held to an order that is incorrect but they had no problem collecting the money. Nightmare. Opposing side is now using this judgement as a leg up and now children are suffering.

I recently used Almer Martins as my real estate attorney for a property purchase. I consider myself to be a high maintenance client. I want all the information and I want it as soon as it’s available, and patience is not one of my virtues. Albert did an excellent job balancing my need for information with his ability to resolve issues with the other attorney without having to involve me. He was very professional and friendly at the same time. I would highly recommend him to anyone needing a real estate attorney and won’t hesitate to use him again if the need arises. P. Chasco

I was referred to this group for a special needs trust. They basically charged me over $450.00, didn't listen, made assumptions, and finally said they were "too expensive" but have to bill me for the first hour. Needless to say, I ended the engagement. I would not recommend this law firm to anyone unless you're interested in wasting money on expensive, inexperienced lawyers that don't take their time to review your request but still charge their high rate.

My experience was horrible. We had an agreement and then right before I needed her representation she pulled out based on false information. I am a whistleblower and so there are things that need to be private. I shared with her factual information and she claimed I provided false information about my name, age and location but she was wrong. The point is she willl leave you after you already have an agreement, you turn down other legal counsels and will leave you to fight the wolves for yourself. And will also falsely accuse you of misrepresenting yourself. Do not take a chance with her! Also they couldn't confirm that their digital systems were encrypted which was concerning for me. All of this happened to me and I hope it doesn't happen to someone else

Our law firm was sued for the inappropriate actions of a supervisor, which made us liable for their mistakes. The person(s) making the allegations were complicit in the inappropriate behavior which made the case not so clear cut. Unfortunately, we were not strategic in our offer to settle this case. We got sucked into the chaos of litigation, and ultimately both side's attorneys did VERY well. We are not completely blaming Ward, however, if we had been given more realistic outcomes, costs, and better advice on a settlement offer upfront, this would have made a big difference in our decisions related to the case. It has taken over a year to write this review. We were hoping to hear from Ward on how we might be able to even things out from the hard feelings of just how costly this case was to settle right before trial along with all the fees to get there. As they say, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". For us, a better settlement offer upfront in the case would have been the prevention and the VERY large amount we paid to later settle,,, on top of the hefty legal fees was the POUND of cure,,, which still leaves us with a sting!

I spoke to Ms. Martell the other day. I had previously reached out to her a day or so before. She return my call personally and was very kind. Ms. Martell provided my fiancée and I with very valuable and easy to understand legal advice with regard to LGBTQ parenting laws. We will definitely be using her for any of our estate planning and family needs. Please note: I was a bit thrown off by the rating, But as I always, do, I read the reviews carefully. The low ratings are not a reflection of this business. Sometime ago, a scammer used the name of this business. This is similar to how a catfish steals someone’s photo off social media to scam others. This law firm is not connected with the credit card scammers in ANY way. The owner of the business is just as much as a victim as anyone else that was affected by the criminals involved.

I would not recommend the Law Office of Theresa Napolitano. Short Version: Back in the days when we had no yelp, in 2002, to be specific, her office screwed up my H1B1 application that I paid $3000 plus for including the expedited processing fee. They filed it non-expedited. Never really apologized or refunded any fees paid. Napolitano's incompetence and refusal to take my questions seriously nearly cost me a job that it took me a year to find. Thankfully, the employer was willing to wait 3 months for an application that a competent attorney could have turned around in 3 weeks.

He did nothing but bs about how fantastic and successful he was at wrongful terminations and sexual discrimination, only to fold at every turn of our suit. He did absolutely nothing but take what little money we had and made us look and feel like fools. BEWARE!!!! Our family hired Daniel Ray Bacon for a dispute over a trust. It turns out that Bacon does not handle this area of law but took our case boasting about how versed he was. Bacon strings you along, promising that your case is really strong. He bills you for subpoenas, depositions, all the while stating he's gathering "evidence." His depositions clearly show he's grasping for straws and unprepared. His plan from the get-go is to bill, bill, bill and urge you to settle before any trial can occur, because that is where his flawed work as an attorney all comes out. We eventually left Bacon after one year and about $100,000 in legal fees. It was our mistake picking Bacon. After finding a real expert in trust law, we realized that Bacon wasn't even fighting the right battles. There were fundamental errors made by Bacon which showed he was oblivious to trust law. In fact, based on the manner of how he conducts his deposition, I'm flabbergasted that he had enough competence to pass the state BAR. Bacon is downright incompetent. For example, Bacon assumed that assets in the trust were properly deeded to the trust when all the while, they were left in the name of the trustor. He failed to realize this. Once brought to his attention, he stated that it was not an issue which it turned out to be. Bacon was fighting for a trust that was never properly funded to begin with and never saw this huge problem. Google Bacon in the California BAR and you will find adverse action was taken on him previously. He was "suspended for one year, stayed, placed on two years of probation with an actual 60-day suspension, and was ordered to take the MPRE within one year." This man is downright dangerous, stay away! He will hurt your pocket book, but worse, he will hurt you while you are involved in a lawsuit. Bacon is best described as the quintessential lawyer that our society loves to hate.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
