I hired Brian when I was in-house counsel at a major corporation, and he was great. He was focused and intelligent in his approach to our matter, came up with a great plan for the case, and executed it flawlessly. I've rarely worked with a lawyer I thought was as good overall, and I would not hesitate to recommend Brian.

Attorney Lewis was not only personable but very professional and knowledgeable. He was able to meet with me in a matter of days and then responded very quickly and diligently with appropriate and careful guidance. Legal matters are rarely ever pleasant but Attorney Lewis was able to take a grim situation and offer advice that made me comfortable and confident in the decisions I have made. Thank you Attorney Lewis for all you done.

I hired Steve to pursue millions of dollars of securities and related claims precisely because he is the best. He is brilliant, dogged and creative. He also provided superb service. He achieved extraordinary results. His services were cost-effective. I fully expect to hire him again and to refer work to him in the future.

I had Darol help me with my business. I have a small business that is actually doing better than I ever expected. I was concerned about passing my business onto my family if I should die. He developed what he calls a "Business Owner Succession Plan". It was just great. Darol is casual but very knowledgeable. I highly recommend him.

Mike and his team represented me and a former employer in a recent case. Throughout the process I was very impressed by the professionalism and expertise that he and his team demonstrated. They demonstrated a deep understanding of what was a complex case, and were also willing and able to explain things to me at whatever level I wanted/needed. This kind of case is never really going to be enjoyable for the client, but he certainly made it extremely educational. Mike's clearly a real leader in the employment field, and I'd recommend him wholeheartedly.

Cindy is a wonderful lawyer. I wasn’t completely sure my case had merit or that there was any wrongdoing on my ex-employers side. She saw the wrong doing, and was my voice when I needed one. I finally felt like I got the justice I so deserved and more. When she would call me, she gave me the complete truth. She never ever sugar coated anything. I was never left in the dark, and if I asked for an update she would always give me one. Even if it was every day of the week (sorry Cindy). So if you need an advocate, a friend, and someone who will listen to you. Cindy is the perfect lawyer for you.

In 2005 my husband suffered an accident that left him a quadriplegic. As I struggled to muddle through the legal ramifications of getting Medicaid assistance, filing for Social Security disability, and fighting insurance denials, Janet provided me with compassionate legal support. She provided me with resources to cut through red tape and get connect with people who could help me. When I was turned down for assistance with home modifications to bring my husband home, she communicated with the parties involved and I was able to get what I needed. When my husband passed away, she contacted me to offer her condolences AND her services for setting my affairs. I have referred several friends who have experienced road blocks getting the care they need for their loved ones, and they have all said the same thing: Janet is compassionate, competent, and trustworthy. I highly recommend her.

Mr. Reid was referred to me by the CLEAR program. I was able to schedule my consultation for the same week I called. Mr. Reid demonstrated a solid understanding of bankruptcy law and its complicated process. He was also very good at explaining said law and process in a way easy to understand. He and his staff are efficient with paperwork and communication, keeping good track of documents, dates, and time. Mr. Reid was prepared and punctual for each meeting and hearing scheduled. On a personal level, he is a nice person with which you can speak to in a regular conversation, which I found comforting during the bankruptcy process. I strongly recommend Mr. Reid's services.

James Howsley and I worked on a joint Land Use project near Ridgefield, Washington.several years ago. I met Tom by going to a community event at the law library in Tacoma where local residents could get free legal information & help with their case. Tom was not only informative and non-judgemental, but he helped me feel safe and in control when I really needed the help and that meant the world to me. He's not just a good lawyer - he's a good person.

I met Stewart while he served on the board of a small arts group. Although he handles some of the largest cases in the Northwest, he gave us the same diligent, ontime, thorough, thoughtful and strong insight for a number of years. I used to wonder how he could display the same commitment to us as he did the big guys with the big bucks. The answer is that he never cuts corners. If he's in - even as a volunteeer as he was for us - then he's in. All the way. What a delight to work with a person of such integrity.

I had mortgage fraud, tax evasion and wire/bank fraud charges coming my way. At the time, I had a lawyer that was not very reliable - forgot conversations (with me and the prosecutors), went to our proffer with my prosecutors unprepared, etc. I went over to Greger and it was night and day. The guy has a million things going on, but he is Johnny on the Spot. He knows everyone, the system, returns all phone calls and emails, etc. I got everything reduced to a tax charge and no jail time. He was completely awesome.

In a time of crisis, in a time of uncertainty, when the authorities are trying to charge you with a crime - there is no other attorney I would call other than Jon Zulauf. His dedication to our case was truly above and beyond what anyone could expect. Jon’s extensive knowledge of the law, attention to detail and his many numerous contacts were instrumental in bringing our case to a favorable conclusion. Jon’s knack for dealing with younger clients, his patience and his thoughtful tone shows that he cares a great deal about his clients. I know he cared a great deal about my daughter when the authorities charged her with a crime she did not commit. On several occasions during our 17 month nightmare the prosecutor tried to bend and twist the law but Jon was there, he was there every step of the way. If it were not for Jon Zulauf and his dedicated staff I am 100% sure that my daughter would have been railroaded into pleading guilty to a crime she did not commit. I cannot say enough good things about Jon, his skill and ability to represent and defend you in a court of law.

Altom has represented me in two different cases. He is a diligent, hard working attorney, and often worked long hours to get me the best possible outcome in both of my cases. I found him to be very caring, and extremely technically savvy in his research. I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs a competent defective products/personal injury or wrongful death attorney.

Attorney Hackbarth helped me to recover money I invested in a fraudulent investment scheme. He took the time to explain all of my options and explained legal ideas to me in plain English that I could understand. He also returned all of my phone calls and always made time for me even though I am sure I was one of his smaller clients. He was always very courteous and despite being a lawyer, had a good sense of humor. I highly recommend him.

I called Michael to ask a couple general questions about my son's seizure case regarding my vehicle. Not only did he expertly answer those questions, but he went beyond the things I was thinking about and gave possible scenarios that turned out to be exactly what happened. He guided through my case with multiple corresponding e-mails and phone conversations while never pressuring me to hire him. Michael Morgan is an excellent attorney and and a caring person. I would recommend him 100% TIM

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
