I am the founder of VISUALPLANT: an Internet Media Platform SaaS for Online publishers. Amy Laub has served for 2 years as my general counsel on call. http://visualplant.net Amy was particularly creative and adept at helping me negotiate a favorable exit from my former employer (a large business-to-business publisher). At first they claimed ownership of a product I conceived and built with my own resources. Three months later they became my first major licensee. Amy continues to manage my contracts and advise on legal formulas that establish profit centers for my growing company.

Russell Bogart represented me in a complex contract litigation matter in New York State Supreme Court. Having worked with numerous attorneys in my professional/business career, I have yet to find any attorney who comes close to Russ' caliber. His ability to research, interpret and understand the legal issues surrounding complex cases is excellent. Additionally ,his calm and unassuming demeanor is a breath of fresh air. I highly recommend Russ.

I’m extremely pleased with the legal support Jessica has provided to me and my small business. Helping me through the tedious process of trademarking my company’s name was much easier thanks to her guidance. I always felt comfortable asking questions, and confident that she was handling all the necessary steps without my having to ask for updates or check-ins. I’d recommend her to any small business owner looking for legal support as they grow their company.

David was so helpful right from the beginning. I was nervous to pay a consultation fee not knowing if it would work out but it was the best decision I ever made. I have been fighting this legal battle alone for 7 years feeling as though there was no hope, my resources were limited and local organizations said my case was too complex. David didn't shy away from the complexity, he realized I desperately needed someone to fight for me and he was willing and able. He is affordable and worth every penny, I have hope and have seen progress in my favor for literally the first time ever and it's entirely because of his passion for what he does and how well he does it. I would recommend him to ANYONE needing a lawyer.

Exceptional attorney! Mr. Song guided me through a very nasty lawsuit and made me feel completely confident and at ease. I went through several attorneys before him who were too quick to dole out bad advice. Mr. Song was always prepared to offer me the optimal choices. Best kept secret in 'good' Dallas attorneys.

It is my privilege to recommend Mr. Robert Marc Steckman, an excellent lawyer who I have been a client of for over 15 years. Mr. Steckman's knowledge, due diligence to every matter on my behalf has been unfailing over the years and even in the face of battling large firms with teams of lawyers, he has prevailed consistently on my behalf. His knowledge across all aspects of the law has ensured that my rights and interests have been defended without fail. His no-nonsense approach to getting to the crux of the matter, isolating the issue, overcoming artificial hurdles and thusly succeeding, is second to none.

I worked with Susan years ago when I was an associate at Jenkens and Gilchrist. She is a copyright guru and is an expert in copyright law. She is also enthusiastic about what she does and is approachable, compassionate and cares genuinely for her clients. Its been years since we worked together and I am in a different area of practice now, but I still refer people her way when asked for an expert in this area. She will not steer you wrong!

Rob is a one of a kind attorney that has highly relevant complementary competencies rare in the Digital legal field. To begin, he understands programming and the tech world in a "young" personal way meaning - he is involved with digital products, is a self proclaimed gamer and is an advanced (believe it or not) coder . This makes all the difference in the world. When you have a startup involving complex technical matters you can turn to him for the required skill set to asses software, timelines, development docs, etc. His firm is fully integrated and can handle all tax matters, contracts/ litigation etc; but, what is truly unique is their ability to match companies, resources and make connections w/ the right people: ranging from affiliate relationships , educational resources to global partnerships (as in our case). As the converging fields of Web, TV and Entertainment merge - Rob's knowledge about the future landscape of convergent media vital, is unusually "current": as Mobile Adv., Social Commerce and Video etc. change to Responsive Design/Apps and as screens proliferate. His flair for digital, devotion to client, integrity, and willingness to go the extra mile - given his unique personality - is whats really needed to comply, compete and succeed in this highly competitive market place.

I had the privilege of having Dan as my Federal public Defender for trafficking charges .However he started his business while handling my case. So my case was passed on. However he was so diligent in my case so...I sought out his firm and hired him to take my case as a private attorney because I felt comfortable and relaxed with his prolific competence and knowledge of law .. I didn't have to compromise my values or integrity for a positive outcome. So personally speaking from experience as public Defender to a private attorney Mr. Leonardi fights for Justice and I strongly recommend him if you are ever in need of professional ligation 5stars are not enough to rate his work.

As we entered our twelfth year as a co-defendent in a lawsuit between four well-known Texas cities, I called Mr. Walker, based upon my previous experience with him, for assistance. In less than ONE year, Mr. Walker was able to professionally, calmly and quickly resolve the litigation to all parties satisfaction to where all four cities have reconstituted their business relationship and have remained friends. Mr. Walker is the consummate professional and has the ability to explain complex legal issues to the layman. I have directly observed him in his communications with Boards of Directors, judges, Board of Trustees and a City Council. Mr. Walker has a "commanding presence" when he is speaking and providing guidance to his client, judge and jury.

James Montano is an excellent attorney that helped me to win an employment related case. He gained my confidence in his abilities by his extreme attention to details and professionalism in representing me to third parties. He was incredibly comprehensive in his preparations and had a game plan for every conceivable scenario. More importantly, he kept me calm throughout the process by demonstrating that there were no issues which he can't handle. Jim is the type of attorney that genuinely cares for his clients and derives a great sense of satisfacation in helping them resolve their difficulties.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
