Michelle and Kathleen helped us update our living will and worked attentively, and patiently, with us to ensure that all of our questions and concerns were addressed within our legal document. We had a lot of back and forth conversation in which they were incredibly helpful in allowing us to fully understand the legal ramifications of each choice we were making with the structuring of our will. At the same time, they are incredibly professional and I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Our construction company, RRA Construction, had to sue a non-paying client and Thomas came as a referral from another attorney for our case. If you are going through or have gone through a case, then you would know how imperative it is to be armed with a winning attorney. Even though we were stressed out of our minds, Thomas reassured us. He helped keep us calm throughout the process. RRA Construction was impressed with Thomas's extensive knowledge and in utilizing his services, we have become a better company in the end. We have Thomas to thank for helping us with our case.

We approached Paul after he was recommended to us by another colleague in our network. We found that Paul is fun to work with, knowledgeable on the latest research and discoveries in the scientific community and is up to date with the most recent technologies that are required to fully engage in today’s collaborative, remote work environment. He gave us an involved, detailed review of a technical patent application and reviewed for us and with us other published art relation to it. He used his well-rounded scientific expertise and broad-based technical acumen to identify gaps in our materials and provide clarity to the specification, especially as it pertained to the figures and drawings. He provided key additional insights in relation to overcoming the challenges of commercializing our application and possible strategies to do so. We found Paul to be personable, engaging, and very relatable with respect to our respective professional backgrounds. We hope to carry on building a mutually sustainable, long-term relationship with him and his practice.

I hired Sandra deal with several companies who were selling my copyrighted poetry on websites such as Ebay, Amazon, Easy, and others. She did an outstanding job! Not only was their infringement stopped, but several of these companies chose to contract with me for the payment of royalties, from which I now receive several thousand dollars annually.

Bruce is a well-respected expert in the field of intellectual property. His unique skill set has developed over a quarter of a century practicing law (1) as an attorney in private practice, (2) as patent counsel at successful high-technology companies, and (2) as both a law school instructor and active speaker in the community. My introduction to Bruce, oddly enough, occurred during critical review of a significant patent portfolio he managed as a vice president in the patent division at a Fortune 500 company. I was tasked with evaluating the strength of the patent portfolio in support of a billion-dollar litigation matter, and found that Bruce skillfully built the patent portfolio at issue. My assessment came as no surprise since Bruce is highly regarded for his expertise in developing, managing and exploiting sophisticated intellectual property strategies. Few attorneys match Bruce's experience and abilities.

I've worked with several intellectual property firms - primarily large firms. For the purposes of a small company like ours, I wish I would have found Ms Kiddk much sooner. She is extremely bright and articulate and interested and focused in advancing your interests in a way that huge firms simply can't match. Highly recommend.

This attorney, Ron Oberndorfer, couldn't come more highly recommended. After all these years it is good to know how well established the Practice continues to be in the same location! This was an on-going challenging case involving continuing Appeals by one contentious party. Mr. Oberndorfer is a man of integrity, honesty, trustworthiness--keeping us fully informed at all times. He was a great and wise counsel, with patience to match--along with his gentlemanly manner (and, make no mistake, "toughness" when necessary).

I have known Brian for 15 years personally and professionally and have always been amazed at his ability to decipher complex problems and deliver a moment of clarity and direction when most needed. Late February of 2012 I approached Brian regarding trademark registrations for MrInventory.com - a new business venture my company was undertaking. Brian agreed to help my company and took on the task of multiple trademark registrations. Starting with research through the entire application process Brian communicated reliable information regarding potential issues and what we may expect. October 2012 both trademark registrations were successfully registered through Brian and I couldn't be happier - I would definitely recommend Brian as a lawyer. Brian may technically be fairly new in the law community, but he has a deep understanding of business with over 15 years of entrepreneurship himself. I consider Brian's experiences and knowledge a true asset to my company and I would not hesitate on hiring Brian again for future intellectual property needs and general law.

Brian has is taking care of some patent work for us. In fact he won an award for his work w/ us and I am very happy for him. With Brian we were able to explain our goals and what we thought were our waterloos. He is concise, has a great team working w/ him and has always kept our best interests in mind. For example, one of our patents is in a provisional status. Yet, we are using the device in public. He explained to us how we could do that and what to watch out for as we allow our device to be seen in the public domain. I highly recomend him and can't find enough words to do so.

Robin Ratner is a knowledgeable and highly skilled attorney that works in the best interest of her clients, not herself. While compassionate is a description usually not associated with attorneys, it is truly what she is. Don't let this softer side fool you though, she is a fierce fighter, tough on the opposition and not someone you want to go up against. You want Robin Ratner in your corner. Robin went above and beyond for me and I could not have been happier with the results. She exceeded all of my expectations.

I have functionally no background with law and as such little to no understanding of it, so when I moved out and was handed a box with all my legal records from birth up, I wasn't really clear on what was important to keep and what wasn't, to say nothing of some pretty fundamental legal forms and precautions. Darcee was able to clearly and concisely answer all of my questions, even when I wasn't sure exactly what I was asking about. She has a calm manner and an amiable sense of humor that made me feel at ease right away. She is undoubtedly my first choice in all legal matters, and an excellent counsel when I need to understand what's going on and what resources I can avail myself of.

Being an oncologist and having a few patent ideas, this is a new process for me. I was referred to Mr. Gary Eastman by a trusted attorney. We have been working together for the last 4 months on two patents (medical devices). I am very impressed with Mr.Eastman's knowledge, professionalism, and details in his work. His fee is upfront and reasonable, and the work is first-class. He did research and gave excellent feedbacks on our patents. His staffs are very kind an accommodated. I am very pleased with his services, glad that I have him on my side. I highly recommend him for others. Regards, Huan, MD, Ph.D.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
