Mr. Jackson helped me and my husband with problems we had with our family estates. He then approached the subject that we had done nothing about our own family estate planning. Without his knowledge of how to approach us in this matter we would not have this handled today in which we are so greatful just knowing if any thing happened our family is taken care of.

Matthew did our living trust and we could not be more pleased with how thorough and well thought-out it is, and how well he explained it to us. Above and beyond the time that we spent with him during our scheduled meetings, he was also very accessible via telephone and e-mail. We appreciate that he touches base with us yearly by mail to update the trust, based on life changes like the addition of a new child. We cannot recommend him more highly - he has been so generous with his time, knowledge and talents.

I had an initial consultation with Meg this morning, and I could not be more pleased. She is honest and direct, explains things thoroughly and respectfully, and helped me plan the first steps towards a resolution for my probate concerns. She cited new local laws to help my cause (proving that she stays up-to-date) and was familiar with the opposing firm's members (she has a solid local reputation and network). I feel very confident in Meg's skills as a Maine Estate Attorney, and would highly recommend her services.

I have been a client of Elder Law of Maine for 8 years. I have used them in trust , guardian, and estate matters. The firm is very knowledgeable and helpful. They are very good at communicating, keeping me informed, and explaining or educating in the legal process. All legal matters have been handled expeditiously and satisfactorily. I like dealing with a firm and legal staff that are familiar with me, my case, and concerns.

Our case involved a car accident in which we were hit by another vehicle running a red light, totalling our SUV. An unfortunate situation was turned around by our friends at The Wade Law Firm, many thanks!

Ms. Cooper represented me in a breach of contract lawsuit which resulted in a very successful settlement of the matter. I found Ms. Cooper to be responsive, efficient, and always kept me informed of the current status of my matter. I would certainly retain Ms. Cooper again if the need arises in the future, and I feel confident referring her firm to my business associates.

While going through the extremely difficult process of moving my father into a Memory Care facility, I had some issues with the leasing agent and the property he had been renting. Taylor was able to negotiate a very fair resolution between the property owner and myself. Taylor is extremely knowledgeable regarding real estate matters, and was able to handle my case efficiently, and effectively. I would absolutely use Taylor again, as well as refer to anyone in need of an excellent Attorney.

Under Maine law, a Maine lawyer must represent each party before certain agreements can be enforceable. This lawyer's input was minimal, required no special knowledge or expertise and he spent no more than 10 minutes on our agreement, had one 2 minute phone call with us the day of the planned signing, spent 15 minutes walking to and from the meeting and then billed for 2 hours at $330 per hour. Certainly his clock runs fast, to be kind. Anyone using this lawyer is advised to get a time estimate first.

Cynthia Catalino is an excellent lawyer. She helped me in a very complicated inheritance case regarding oa. the selling of real estate affecting siblings living in the US, Italy, Eritrea and Somalia. She was swift, accurate, competent, knowledgeable, creative in finding solutions across borders, committed, flexible and compassionate. Atty Lane and her staff were exceptional in dissolving an existing trust. They were all very quick to communicate with me when I asked for information. They updated me clearly when there were changes, without doing so excessively and incurring unnecessary fees. They were patient with me when I was confused from time to time. They were very considerate of my finances in balance with what was needed to successfully resolve this issue. They were very well prepared and knowledgeable in the field of expertise. They were very down-to-earth as well as very professional. It was a great balance of skills and humanity. I would recommend them to anyone. I'm grateful that I found them.

Like the plumber with the stopped up sink, I am an attorney who put off having an estate plan done for a decade or more. I finally decided to engage the law firm of Samuel, Sayward & Baler to do my own estate plan, including Wills, Trusts, Homestead, Durable Powers of Attorney, Health Care proxies, etc. I will confess that it takes time and was challenging for me. The law firm was professional, knowledgeable and “user friendly”. They were responsive, diligent and had tremendous follow through. They did outstanding work which was tailored to my family’s needs. Once it was completed, the relief and satisfaction at having my estate planning behind me was enormous. I couldn’t be happier with the estate planning work done by the law firm of Samuel, Sayward & Baler. Do yours sooner rather than later. They understand, they can help, and the peace of mind you will feel afterward is priceless . As a satisfied client, I would recommend this law firm to anyone.

Though Matthew is a younger attorney, he is extremely knowledgeable and professional. He replied to all of my voice messages or emails promptly and always made me feel like my case was a priority. I was dealing with my siblings who were trying to sue me as the personal representative for my father's estate, and Matthew did an excellent job of guiding me through this process. Our outcome was successful and I would recommend him to anyone that needs a good attorney.

Attorney Booth provided my wife and me with comprehensive estate planning. He performed an initial assessment of our situation and carefully crafted recommendations for changes that he was able explain to us clearly. He then gave us a fee estimate for his scope of services and drafted all new documentation for us (as well as correcting some errors he discovered in our title documents). He performed all work in a timely and professional manner.

Boyd & Boyd, Centerville, MA, are experts in elder law. We went to one of their free seminars that was advertised in a mailing. We liked what we saw, and there was no pressure. we learned that Probate will cost our heirs 3-5% of our estates. We also learned that only a trust, not a will, avoids probate. Even if a Trust only saved our heirs 3-5% of our estate (although it can do much more), it would be a no-brainer. That alone would far far exceed the cost. So we worked with Keats Boyd to set up a comprehensive estate plan- Trust, Wills, Powers of Attorney, Health Care Proxies, Living Wills, Homestead protection, etc. Some of the things that especially impressed us were: 1. Working with Keats-it was very easy-he's likable, friendly, down to earth, gentle, patient- a quality person. 2. Services and fees were clearly explained ahead- no surprises or misunderstandings. 3. Permission to call with questions without being "on the clock" for extra charges. 4. Yearly updates of documents, and three year reviews, at no extra charge. 5. Should anything happen to us, Boyd & Boyd has everything, knows everything, and will walk family members through what needs to be done. In summary, we had a great experience, and enthusiastically endorse F Keats Boyd III. Dave & Nancy

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
