Mine was a high conflict divorce and child custody case. My ex made my life difficult and stressful in every way. When Sajjid (JJ) took on my case, it was the first time I had some one who actually went head on with my ex and his attorney. What sets JJ apart from other attorneys is that he actually cares about his clients and feels their pain. He is passionate about what he does and goes to every extent to make sure the truth is heard. He did not take my case for the face value but he collected counter arguments to negate every lie and manipulation from my ex. He not only protected me but also my child. If you want someone who will not just go an extra mile but also work diligently to protect your right, I would undoubtedly recommend JJ. As clients, we go to attorneys for solutions and before I found JJ, there was no real solution from any of the attorneys I went to. You only hear what you already know but with JJ, I guarantee that you will see a difference in your life. He is an intelligent attorney you can count to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Ms. Kline is far and away the best attorney I've known, having known far too many than I'd prefer to. She has helped me with several matters (trust and estate, negligence and contract/leasing matter) and in each instance she was on her game, extremely well prepared and running circles around the other party and their attorneys. What's more, she was at all times extremely friendly and approachable, responsive and an absolute pleasure to deal with....an advocate in the real sense of the word. If you are fortunate enough to get her to represent you, you will be happy you did. You're a unicorn Amy, thanks for all your help!

David Lynn is by quantum leaps the best lawyer I have ever had. I never realized what zealous was until David was on my case. Sadly, I did not find him until after a series of unfortunate lawyers who made fatal errors and lost winnable cases. Had I found David earlier he would have spared me a lot of grief and legal abuse. Unlike others, I felt very accurately represented. He got me and my case in depth and detail. My case was very painful to go through, and David’s empathy, compassion and guidance made it more bearable. What was most gratifying is that he was the only lawyer, with far more guts than the others, to challenge my condo board on false accusations, deception, inaccuracies and worse, which felt gratifying and gave us some leverage to reach a settlement. He was also very respectful and personable with opposing counsel which I am sure helped. David is a good teacher. I got a very long chart with many rows and columns of charges that I could not understand for years. He projected on the screen and went through the items until it made sense to me. David was very responsive, returned messages, was patient with me, easy to talk to and stayed on top of my case. I appreciated his sensitivity to issues of social justice and empathy for his clients. Without him I might have lost my home, and the experience would have been more traumatic. He gives a good name to the profession.

I was in negotiations to purchase a competitors client list. I realized that I needed some help in drafting contract documents and to make sure we were protected. Communication was excellent! Dan always answered any questions I had to make sure we understood every part of the process. We would never have gotten this deal done with out him! I had called a few other lawyer offices first and Dan was the only one that would actually speak to me to find out what I needed. Highly recommended! Thanks Dan!

My experience with Dov is that he is passionate about helping hurt children and their parents, and that he is at the top of his profession. One of his most recent wins involved a $10.5 million settlement for a seven-year-old girl, who suffered brain damage at birth. The case involved improper use of a drug, known as Misoprostol or Cytotec, which was given off-label to ripen the cervix and induce labor. Depositions showed there was ineffective communication between the nursing staff and the physician during labor, leading to a significant delay in responding to signs the baby was not getting enough oxygen or tolerating the labor. The settlement provided the child with up-front cash and future periodic payments to pay for her medical care, therapies, equipment, and present and future care. Also, the mother was compensated for her extraordinary services in caring for her disabled child. I know Dov to be extraordinarily diligent when it comes to keeping clients informed about their cases, and answering all their questions with kindness and concern. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.

I have worked with Mr. Andrews numerous times over the years (I am a property manager), and he has always been very communicative regarding whichever account or case he was handling for me at any given time. Not only is he incredibly knowledgeable with respect to his field, but his ability to recall case law and court decisions is uncanny. He is great in court, and knows the laws with respect to the FDCP like the back of his hand. I would highly recommend Mr. Andrews and his firm (Andrews & Lawrence Prof. Services, LLC) to any association looking for an attorney, or to any property manager whose community is seeking counsel. His recovery rate is second to none.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
