Attorney Duschka is an outstanding practitioner who has kept us well-informed about all aspects of our highly complex transactions. Julie is highly organized and very thorough. She and her team not only got us across the finish line, but also kept their eyes (and ours) on the short and long term objectives of our company. Julie's intuition and tenacity to get things done right are second to none and we are grateful to her for that. Attorney Duschka represented us on time, under budget and with the highest degree of integrity. She is a great asset and we intend to use her again for our next transaction.

Forbes helped me negotiate the sale of my business in 2017 by drawing up both a rock solid P&S agreement and employment contract. In 2020 he helped me negotiate a favorable severance package. I can’t say enough good things about him—great attention to detail, excellent legal mind, calm demeanor, easy to work with, uncommon common sense.

I'm a client of Attorney Dzialo who just had a civil matter resolved with the assistance of Attorney Dzialo. This lady is a rising star in the legal domain and should prove to be a prominent attorney nation-wide very soon if not already. Her style is to be very matter of fact and knowledgeable with a keen, perceptive ear for percieving information regarding facts which only a sharp attorney might pick out. Her friendly, attractive demeanor is only the icing on the cake, and in my final communication to her I have indicated for her to not go anywhere without telling me first. I certainly want Ms. Dzialo on my side should I ever need an attorney again.

Elisabeth’s intelligence, steady approach, and passion for her work made her an unbelievable asset and support during my divorce process. Her balanced viewpoint and researched approach kept things in perspective during turbulent times, eventually guiding us to an equitable settlement, which would not have been accomplished without her diligence. I cannot overemphasize how highly I recommend her.

Extremely intelligent and out of the box thinking lawyer. He's truly one of a kind and represents everything that a lawyer SHOULD BE. He's passionate about his clients and goes above and beyond. Hiring him was a blessing as he helped shed light on corruption. He does not give up, he's willing to do whatever it takes, he's honest and most importantly he listens.

I have worked with Karen Jackson on the Estate Plan for myself and my wife. Karen took what could easily be a difficult situation, as no one likes to talk about death, and made the process easy and comfortable. It was great to work with an attorney that has an abundance of experience, like Karen, because knew exactly what questions to ask us as this was our first time working on an Estate Plan. I was so satisfied that I recommended her, without reservation, to my parents who also needed to finalize their Estate Plans.

John has closed several real estate deals for us over the years and recently prepared a multi-layered Estate Plan including wills, Real Estate Trusts, Powers of Attorney, Health Care Proxies, etc. we have a disabled son so it was important that all the trusts were set up in compliance with disability law so that the funds allocated did not supplant his government services.

As a former financial services professional, I worked with 100s of lawyers over the years and feel qualified to review their services. When I retired four years ago, we hired Andrew to help us set up a new business practice and to be our outside corporate counsel on business dealings. He has provided us expert legal advice and counsel in matters related to our corporate structure, risks and contracts. Andrew responds quickly and competently to our inquiries and has bent over backwards to accommodate our schedules even meeting us in our home offices or remote sites. When you hire a lawyer you are looking for a legal partner to advise and protect your interests. They must be an integral part of our operation to provide the appropriate counsel. Andrew asks all the right questions to provide you with the best possible options. He helps us reach our objectives in any legal dealings without undue risk. I highly recommend Andrew and have recommended him to others who regularly call me to say how valuable they find his work.

We couldn’t be more pleased with the excellent service David Adams provided to us in setting up and establishing our Estate Plan. The plan he designed for us includes will, trust, HIPAA, homestead, and power of attorney documentation, etc. This encompasses a great amount of detail. David patiently worked with us to outline our options and provided us with what we feel to be strong solutions to protect our assets and to avoid probate in the event of our passing. We are very grateful for Mr. Adams’ thoroughness and trustworthiness taking the time to listen with a thoughtful ear and to explain to us in a manner so that we could understand what our plan entails. The peace of mind this provides to us knowing that we and our loved ones will be provided for and that there will be less legal hassle during a time of loss is invaluable. We are comforted to have David Adams as our Estate Planning Attorney and to know he is available to us throughout the years to come to help us along this path of life. Our thanks to David for helping us feel a little more Safe, Secure and Sound by providing his counsel with such important life decisions and documents!

There are no words to describe Christine. She is truly one of the best in the industry and supported us through buying our first home. She kept the process moving seamlessly and helped educate us along the way as it was completely new to us. Her communication and responsiveness made us feel like we were her only client, which however, we weren't. Honestly, i could go on and on about Christine, and would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a lawyer, specifically within the Real Estate division.

Attorney Richardson put together a complete estate planning package: last will and testament, durable power of attorney, and healthcare proxy for both myself and my wife. Throughout the process he displayed an in-depth knowledge of the process, and kept us informed as to what we needed to complete the paperwork. He was very responsive in my questions, and made himself available to ensure that my constant revisions were taken care of. I would heartily recommend Attorney Richardson for anyone seeking legal estate planning services.

My lawyer recommended Judge Smoot for a highly contested divorce involving both division of assets and parenting plan. Judge Smoot’s background is as a judge, he told us literally what a judge would most likely do and gave his fair feedback. Sometimes my ex did not like this and sometimes i did not. That is the point of mediation. He was especially great at keeping my ex’s rage under control and keeping all feelings leveled. I should add that both Judge Smoot and the office managers and assistants were very pleasant, kind and caring. I have already recommended them to friends and family.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
