Amanda Walsh represented me recently in the matter of a campus sexual assault. I found her to be straightforward, honest, and candid throughout the hearing and resolution process. She provided insight into matters ranging from the character of different people involved in the case to different options for legal recourse. Though I have talked with many lawyers about this issue, Amanda showed a unique ability to combine deep knowledge about Title IX with solid, pragmatic advice about different ways to move forward with the matter. Strongly recommended.

Mr. Merriam is representing our insurance company in a civil lawsuit. His integrity and knowledge is superior. His demeanor is one of comfort and casual humor. Do not take that to mean he is casual about his approach. I really can not say enough good things about him!

Michael Rossi has represented me, and continues to do so, with distinction. I am very pleased with his service and advice for many reasons. First, he is very knowledgable about the legal issues involved with my ongoing legal battle. Second, he is extremely responsive to my questions and concerns. Third, he is bright and perceptive. Fourth, he is an outstanding writer: insightful, clear, persuasive, offering very well reseached prose in compelling presentations. Fifth, he follows up, does what he says he will do on time, is meticulous on details, has a fine sense of humor, and is genuine. Sixth, Michael has been thoroughly honest with me and has fought for me with resilience and fortitude. He has never led me on, for he tempers assertiveness with realism. I have found Michael Rossi to be a straight shooter who will go to the mat as needed. He is a gem...the consummate professional. I feel fortunate to have him in my legal corner. I would recommend him without any reservations.

Bettina was fantastic. I wouldn't say our divorce was messy, but it was very emotional and a bit complicated, especially with respect to custody. Bettina really helped us through the tough conversations, and we both ended up with an aggreement we were happy with. What's more, Bettina actually caught mistakes in our agreement that our own lawyers had missed. Would definitely recommend.

Att. Mark Zajac represented my family against the injustices of DCF. Our family had 4 lawyers that worked to fight for the rights of my children. Each of the lawyers played a vital role in trying to to get my 5 children home. Some lawyers are very knowledgeable, and know how to identify and fight against all the dirty tricks of dcf, some speak above you and feel somewhat unapproachable, some are a bit indifferent, which is quite scary, but sometimes you're lucky to find a lawyer who is knowledgeable. caring and always approachable, who will listen to you and will fight for you. When you are in a battle against DCF it is common to feel helpless, like you have no voice. Mark Zajac was the voice for my family. He is honestly the best lawyer we could have asked for.

I have know Attorney Cedrone Logan for years and had the unfortunate need of an attorney. I was represented by Attorney Logan during a three year court battle in the state of Massachusetts. Attorney Cedrone Logan did a wonderful job in trying my case and with her dedication and dilligence I prevailed against a huge BMW dealership. I refer her to friends and family and would always reccomend her to anyone in need of legal services. She is an intelligent, dilligent and compassionate professional.

I am in the process of seeking legal assistance. I contacted Bruce & Kelly law firm in Burlington MA. I was so lucky to get chance talked with Attorney John Bruce directly. Attorney Bruce has great understanding of the medical term and complexity of the treatment which made the conversation very easy. He is very sharp and creative . He pointed out the strength and weakness of my case with the limited information that I provided to him during our conversation. He also provided potential solutions on how to handle the challenges of the case. He is super patient and kind to answer all my questions on a late Friday afternoon. I definitely would recommend him to others.

I am doing a Pro se case of posthumous paternity; my father being Earl Warren, once the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. I have tried many lawyers and all kinds of internet trying to get representation with no avail. Mr. Le Ray wrote an excellent Law Review that I can use to present my case to district court. The article is very detailed which I need to fight this battle in court. I have limited income so I have to do this myself.

Attorney Spano was extremely helpful with advice on my elderly parents and preparing their wills. He has particular expertise in elder affairs and resources. He even helped me with persuading them that they would ultimately be happy moving to an assisted living facility, and could recommend the best ones! I just did a post bereavement consultation with him, and he was again realistic and helpful.

In 2012 I was engaged in a case where I was assigned to attorney Perullo by the state since I couldn't afford a private attorney. Several of my co-defendants were also assigned public attorneys. As the case progressed it seemed like my peers' attorneys didn't take the case seriously at all - for example one didn't return phone calls and neglected to meet with his client altogether. Perullo on the other hand was very helpful and was always available to meet with me and discuss the case details. In the end he pretty much carried the case for us (even though I was the only client he was bound to). On a personal note, I was a student at the time and I was very worried about losing my financial support or getting expelled for my involvement in the case. Attorney Perullo recognized the personal importance of the case to me and went out of his way to close the case as soon as possible. He was very friendly and professional; It was his determination and knowledge of the law which won us the case.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
