I have used Kevin Thomson for a few different legal occurrences and issues. When people say, "I love my lawyer", this is just like whom they are speaking of. Kevin Thomson is honest, extremely helpful with legal advice, and Kevin is fully experienced in what he does as an attorney. He won't steer you wrong. He is the picture you will find under the heading "honest lawyer"! There are still attorneys out there that do the right thing for you, the client, instead of themselves. I would recommend Kevin Thomson with the highest honors possible for any attorney. If you desire the assistance needed to move forward with any legal case, Kevin Thomson is your man. I am privileged to have Kevin Thomson as my attorney.

I had a family issue arise where difficult choices had to be made that could impact future generations. I found Mr. Betz to be wise and knowledgeable, and able to assist in looking at the options and long-term potential consequences of each one. I was very impressed with his concern for ethical choices over just expedient ones. I so appreciate the way he considered family relationships as well as legal options. I would highly recommend him.

I had a very good experience with Hazel Holly. She resolved my case which involved a store selling me a 5,000 tractor that was underpowered and ineffective to cut grass on my steep hills. She took the lead to eliminate all liability and had this issue removed from my credit reports. THANKS Hazel!

My insurance company would not pay my bills. I called several lawyers who would not help me because they said there was not enough money involved. Greg filed a lawsuit, got the insurance company to pay my bills, and he even worked out a settlement with my doctor. He really helped me when nobody else would.

She is an amazing person besides a very firm professional. She has ability to predict what will be needed and how to get it done. She is not going to lie to you about options, outcomes and choices. She is very willing and open regarding her abilities and what she feels she cannot do well. She is willing to refer you on to others with more expertise in certian areas. Her integrity is the most impressive to me.

He's been extremely easy to work with and has made those difficult times seem easier because I know that things will be handled the right way, and always in my favor. Mr. Loznak has helped immensley on several issues and is highly appreciated and approachable! He has assisted on several issues including contract law, trusts and business. When I was unsure what to do, this distinguished and high end attorney was quickly able to show me the right and ethical direction to go. I once had a piece of office equipment sent to me marked as "paid" from a company that was giving away "free" computers by a drawing for just calling and asking questions. Was not interested in a free computer and inquired of this company to purchase a better system with a printer - scanner - fax. Two weeks after speaking to a sales representative briefly about the computers they offer, a low end CPU (with no all in one printer) was on my door step marked as "Paid in Full". I did not purchase this computer and while it was a step up from the one I had, it was basically useless as it had no printing ability. This was when Mini-towers cost several thousand dollars and basic printers were three to five hundred. I could only think I won the contest. I heard nothing from the company for nine months - when they wanted over two thousands dollars from me. I felt tricked, taken for granted and advantage of until I spoke with Mr. Loznak. He reviewed the facts, advised me on some commercial laws and ultimately said "look at it this way, you got a good computer so pay for what you got. Buy a printer as soon as you can afford one". This is one example and may sound simplistic but Mr. Loznak, acting as an effective counselor set me straight and I was able then to not feel taken advantage of or tricked, got the manufacturer to subtract the price of a printer from the cost of the CPU and everyone was happy in the end. In the beginning having to pay for an incomplete setup was preventing me from affording what I needed to complete an office. There are of coarse more facts to this and other issues I have had the privilege to work with Mr. Loznak on, and the result is always the same. A clear and precise path to take to a desired end where everybody wins. Thank You to no end Mr. Loznak!

John Peters is the quintessential example of an outstanding attorney. His demeanor, knowledge and professional conduct are exemplary. I had observed his work in the courtroom before I endeavored to pursue his services. He was recommended to me by both attorneys and sitting judges. I think those endorsements speak for themselves. The most important word to describe both his personal and professional conduct is: HONEST.

Have worked with Mr. Bunting on legal matters. He is knowledgeable., experienced, a man you can trust of the highest integrity. Also he is not afraid to take on controversial matters. Yet his advice is respected,. so that he would guide a client into or away from litigation as the merits, facts and law would dictate. He is fearless, loyal, yet friendly, and exudes confidence that others will relate to and become infected by it. In short one could not find a better advocate in all of Michigan.

Kristyn is an absolute rock star!!!!! She handled my divorce as well as a child/family matter. My divorce was tricky as there was a child involved that was not my child and Michigan state law says I would be held accountable as the father. In my divorce hearing the judge complemented her on how well she structured my case and explained that any other way of doing it likely would have been denied. In my family situation, she was so well prepared; I was truly impressed. My file was three times as thick as the other side of the isle, and before the hearing she was rehearsing her opening statements. This made me feel like I was in the hands of a true professional and someone who cares. After getting to know her a little bit through all of this, I can whole heartedly tell you that she does care and will stand up for you in the most honorable way! She gets my 5-star vote, and undoubtedly if a situation arises that I need her expertise in the future I will be calling her!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
