Too say the least, Peter was very helpful with a personal tax issue I had this past year. He was very informative and well knowledgeable on all the aspects and possible options. I was very nervous about this issue, but Peter explained everything and walked me through each needed step. It was so very nice to find a lawyer who specializes on the financial side, including tax and securities!

James Alexander and the firm he is working at, Damon, Ver Merris, Boyko & Witte is the most reputable firm i am have come across. They have handled cases for us against companies with big wallets and attorneys that were very sneaky, crafty, trying every imaginable tactic to win. James pursued the ethical path and we prevailed despite opposing counsels tactics. He is very knowledgeable and when he doesn't know something, he says so and finds a knowledgeable expert. An incredibly honest attorney.

I first came to Rebekah with a problem I had with a tax debt from the IRS in 2012. I had a debt that numbered in the thousands of dollars that I could not afford to repay. Initially, my expectations were low, I didn't think there would be much flexibility with the IRS in this situation. I was pleasantly surprised when Rebekah reviewed my 2011 tax return and discovered that the IRS had made an error and that there was actually a tax credit I was eligible for and could be applied in my specific situation. What initially was a bill for several thousands was reduced to less than 200 dollars. Rebekah even went through the trouble of having the IRS agree to take the debt out of my following year's tax return, which meant I didn't have to pay anything out-of-pocket immediately. Each subsequent year Rebekah has reviewed and submitted my tax returns and has always been friendly, customer-centric, and prompt. Her expertise and trustworthiness is without reproach.

Ryan assisted my Mom and me with estate planning and medical care issues after my Dad's health declined suddenly. My parents didn't have much in the way of established legal directives or plans. Ryan stepped in and efficiently and effectively put everything together. He knows elder law and estate planning inside and out and took great care of us. He is down to earth and humble as well. I highly recommend him to others.

I went in to have her write up a llc for me. She was very thorough and professional. Answer all my questions without hesitation. Everything is set up and taken care of. She is now going to handle all my taxes and accounting needs as well. Very very different from other attorneys I have dealt with. Also wanted to mention she did this at a time that worked for me. Which no one else would even think about. Just a overall fantastic experience.

Within the first few minutes of meeting Ian, I realized two things. First, he's one of the good guys. He is compassionate, cares about people and doesn't carry that air some attorneys tend to have. But, more importantly for this situation, I knew I wanted him on my side when it came to my court case. His sage, percipient advice and keen, confident strategy routinely put the other side off balance and gave me an advantage in negotiating a complex civil case with multiple defendants. Put simply: Mr. Northon is one of the best attorneys I've met. I learned quickly it's easy to find an attorney to take your case, but it is quite difficult to find someone who will make your case his own. As a client, I want my attorney to be wholly invested in my case. Even at some of the best firms, that doesn't always happen. However, with Ian, he often reminded me about key points in the case I had forgotten or missed. Moreover, my long, arduous case was draining and I needed someone with Ian's personality. After our consultations, I always felt more energized and clear on the way ahead. He has a knack for explaining technical issues in an easy-to-understand way even a layman like I can comprehend. And, even when I asked simple questions, sometimes more than once, he answered without making me feel dense. Remember, he's not only one of the good guys, but the attorney you want in your corner. People skills are nice, but for your case and mine, we need to couple people skills with talented litigation. To that end, Ian Northon is the best choice. From the moment we began, he "owned" my case like it was his...as if he was personally involved. What I mean, beyond what I mentioned above, is Ian tends to buck the adage about attorneys stating "no one will be more invested in your case than you". There were times where I felt Ian was readier than I. He definitely took a personal interest in my case and delivered advice and strategy as if it was his own. His confidence and assertive style kept my case moving and the other side from getting away with some really dirty tricks they tried to pull. I would have been far worse off in my case had I not met Ian. More than that, he was honest. Mr. Northon never gave me false hope or promises that weren't delivered. Further, he is efficient in his case handling. I never felt overcharged. In fact, he was vocal about not wasting my money and pointed out attempts by the other side to increase their billable hours, but at no advantage to their clients. (This point was very important to me because I had just retired from the military and hadn't yet found employment.) In sum, he is an essential asset to his clients and daunting foe to the other side. This attorney-at-law is an example to his colleagues in his integrity, legal knowledge, litigation skills and client relations. He is empathetic and cares about your case, but also well-equipped to be your "secret weapon" in court. If you find yourself needing skilled, honest representation, I wholeheartedly recommend Ian Northon.

I am not one eager to make recommendations but I have no reservations suggesting Heidi Ferris-Salter for legal counsel. I don't mind giving credit where it is deserved as I have the utmost confidence in Heidi's abilities. I was fortunate to have Heidi represent me in a malpractice case. I wanted the best and after thorough research and recommendations I decided that the Ferris-Salter Law Firm was my best bet. I was right. Heidi was very friendly and professional. She showed a genuine interest in my well being with more than just lip service. Heidi and her husband Don went out of their way to travel to my house and donate a much needed medical device. Don't let her kind demeanor fool you though, when you need her to be tough she is like a pit bull. Heidi didn't let me get pushed around or taken advantage of. I not only was facing the defendants lawyers but also her employers legal team, both listed as "super lawyer" firms. Then there was the insurance company lawyers. I felt outnumbered and out gunned but fortunately for me Heidi is smart as a whip and knows her trade well. It seemed that the other professionals we dealt with had great respect for her and some even saying so. When I came to Heidi, I knew I had a difficult case. She already had all the resources and professionals my case required that were probably the best I could have gotten. Heidi gave me good counseling and made me aware of the many pitfalls and traps that awaited. When I needed a lawyer in two places at once, Heidi's husband, Don filled in. Two super lawyers for the price of one. I had a truck load of paperwork to be sorted through and analyzed. I don't know how they did it as the work seemed overwhelming but Heidi and her team of professionals went through it all with a fine tooth comb and didn't miss a thing. Heidi made the whole process easy for me. She did all the leg work and heavy lifting so to speak. In the end it is results that matter. I could not be more pleased or have gotten better results if not for Heidi. She earned every penny and worked hard for it. I definitely got my money's worth with Heidi. A good lawyer like her pays for themselves in the long run. Today my quality of life is far greater than I had even hoped for and I owe Heidi a debt of gratitude for that. This isn't the time to go bargain shopping for lawyers. You want the best. You need Heidi.

I would highly recommend Mr Glotta and Mr. Martin. They took on a case that several lawyers refused to accept. They won a judgment for me that literally saved my life. A very efficient and no-nonsense lawyer; my case went through a lot faster than I ever thought! A positive experience, and I've seen three lawyers (for three different issues) in four years. Mr. Kline didn't try to charge me for anything extra than what was initially agreed upon, which was not the case with the other two attorneys I hired (not from his office). He returned my calls promptly and never wasted time. I'd recommend him over many other lawyers who may appear to be more personable.

Ken is great! He has over 33 years experience, and he's really good at what he does. He successfully helped me to get workman's comp after a crooked employer tried to claim my injury didn't happen at work. He's now helping me with a disability claim. I've hired him in the past as well, and I'm always pleased with the outcome. If you want justice, look no further.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
