I recently had to use Mr Welborn for a case and his manners are terrible and so his his secretary's. He will tell you he can gurantee he can get you off and its no problem. He doesn't know how to keep in contact with you and updated on your case. After a month went by without hearing from him I had to call him and ask for an update from his secretary and then it was late the next day before he called me back. He talks down to you and makes you feel like how you feel is stupid. I had a lot riding on this case and I felt he was ill prepared for it throughout the whole case. Then he didn't even show up for my court date. I called to ask what was going on and his secretary rudely stated that she had tried to call but couldn't get an answer on a Friday at 4:30 after I talked to her a 3:30 with no mention about no having to show up. When asked if she called the number given to call if no answer she stated she had not called it. Then she had ample amount of time to call the morning of the hearing and did not. The day of the trial the Judge and Solicitors office wanted to know why he didn't show up and that I had to represent myself. I received a rude letter needing my information after I had given it to him on several different occasions on how to reach me after he wasn't able to contact me on one occasion. It seemed like he just wasnt concerned about my case what so ever. He acted as if he was the greatest lawyer ever if he did anything concerning my case. I wanted a jury trial and he never pushed it.

Attorney Kuykendall was able to ‘arm’ me with answers to probable questions. He also guided me on what to research to provide receipts for Amazon and VA medical shipments. I was able to go to court Pro Se confident that I could get the case dismissed. I won’t know for a week if I succeeded. But, I got my day in court and defeated the opposing attorneys case. He was stunned. No attorney that I could have hired to go to court for me would have had my 20 years of knowledge about the case. Excellent advice. I highly recommend his services!

No respect for me or my situation. I was left by my husband of 32 years and her response was to tighten the belt. I would love to see her tighten her belt. Extremely poor at communicating status of an on-going auto accident case and felt very out of touch with status of everything for almost a year. The only way we could get updates was to consistently email to follow up, which would then initiate a little movement. Never did we pro-actively get any type of update or status of any sort. Once we were assigned to a new lawyer, it became very apparent that things were sitting and were not being “worked”. Within 2 days, we had more movement than we did in almost a year. Disappointed to say I would not recommend.

Robert Butcher is a knowledgeable and caring attorney. He may be somewhat overwhelmed at times because I think he tries to help everyone and is in a small firm, but he was very very good at what he did. He has a lot of knowledge and is quick on his feet, he is very smart and capeable and never let us down. He made many successful court appearances and assisted to help us get an almost unheard of victory in our case! It is still ongoing but I am confident that he is going to see us through it all! I think he is a great person, as is his wife and I do recommend him/them and the Camden Law Firm!

From the beginning of the process, to the end of the process, Robert Butcher stumbled, bumbled, and mumbled his way through the process. He failed to notify me of my court date, causing me to miss it. As a result, my wife received a large amount of child support ($770 per month, for 1 child, 1 visitation per month... and I only make $32k per year!). Not only was he incompetent, he failed to return phone calls and answer vital questions relating to child support payment procedures and status updates. In addition, my wife was allowed to take all of my belongings, including personal belongings that I had prior to the marriage. She also destroyed my brand new home without repercussion. I have not seen my daughter now for 4 months and 6 days. He's also refused to refund the retainer and I'm now forced to seek legal action against him to recoup my losses. You are better off representing yourself.

Became very clear early on in our case that extreme partiality went towards the person with more money. We were dealing with a man that had a long history of abuse, stalking, and a known sexual predator that also had a history of pushing drugs on women and selling them. Yet very little investigation was done on this man. Many requests of well checks on child were completely ignored. Best interest of a child will not be taken seriously.

Cheryl has been fighting hard since day one, she won our case and got us everything we wanted. This was a complicated case and the father had never seen his child unsupervised. She won JOINT custody 50-50. Now everyone is happy! She always kept us informed and prepared for court or about court. As far as how long it takes, family court is backed up. Court takes time unless you have an emergency that the judge recognizes there isn't something new happening on your case every week. So when there is CHERYL , seth, or Brookie will tell you.. the office is great and I absolutely love everyone inside. Hero lawyer and definitely someone you call on in time of need. I hired Cheryl to handle my divorce and it took 4 years for the divorce to be finalized. My ex was dragging his feet, but I feel like she definitely could have done more to get the case moving. I had to call daily to get any answers or updates, and even when I called I was never given a solid answer. My phone calls were never returned and I actually had to go to the office a few times just to receive any communication. I would never recommend this attorney. While other attorneys in the area may be more expensive, I feel like you would definitely get better representation with anybody else in the area. You could probably have better luck with a brand new kid right out of law school than with her years of experience. Not only is she unsatisfactory, but her entire staff is as well. DO NOT HIRE HER!

No idea what happened in these negative reviewers' cases, but there's something odd about them because she did an excellent job for me. My experience with Adam Owensby and Seibert Law Firm was far from favorable, lacking the "quality client representation" they claim to provide. During my initial $275 meeting with Adam, he took only about five sentences of notes and advised me to write a letter to the other party as his sole suggestion. Later, when I learned the other party was taking me to court, Adam sent a $3,000 payment request—without a retainer agreement or any explanation for the discrepancy from the verbal quote he had given during our meeting. I emailed Adam to inquire about the retainer agreement and the price difference, but after a week with no response, I called Seibert Law Firm, specifically asking to speak with Kevin or Rebecca Seibert to clarify if this was standard practice. Instead, Adam returned my call, claiming he hadn’t received my email and offering excuses. I again requested to speak directly with Kevin or Rebecca and ended the call. Adam then called back, saying Kevin was available. After I explained my experience in detail, Kevin also made excuses for Adam’s behavior. Despite the website stating, "call for a free consultation," my initial meeting cost $275, and the only advice provided was to write a letter to the other party. It seems Seibert Law Firm’s standard practice includes sending payment requests without any contract, retainer agreement, or clear explanation. Additionally, I was repeatedly told that I "live in a red state" and was once told I "rub people the wrong way" for standing up for my rights—comments that felt irrelevant and unprofessional. Bottom line: It felt as though Adam Owensby’s focus was more on collecting fees than on providing genuine quality representation. My recommendation: Proceed with caution if you’re considering Adam Owensby or Seibert Law Firm. If you’re looking for an attorney genuinely invested in your case, I’d strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

Hired through Lemon Law Group in 2021, was passed around from paralegal to paralegal at least 5 or 6 times. No one ever wanted to contact me back and nothing seemed to be getting done. Recently I was made aware that not only is there another paralegal but a different attorney also. I was also made aware today that this lawyer dropped the ball and really screwed me over and cost me a lot of money because I was told the defendant in the case submitted a request for dismissal back in May of 2023 and it was granted so obviously this man never showed up for court or did anything on my case, now I have paid into a lemon vehicle for a couple more years all because of this man's negligence. I am so upset that I have been drug around for all this time for nothing. This car is now worth less than I owe on it so I am completely screwed. Thanks alot.

I do not feel that Katharine fought for me. I lost SO MUCH during my case - not just monetarily, although that was a HUGE part of it. I needed Katharine’s help and I truly didn’t feel like she cared. My ex-husband kept doing TERRIBLE things to me - and I was told nothing could be done. Does that make sense? My life was in absolute shambles for a long time. I am still recovering well over a year later. I did not have enough money to change law firms or I would have. I kept hoping things would get better, but they did not. I just feel like things ended so badly. I am truly disappointed. I also felt like she did not push to get information from my ex-husband. I just felt that nothing was taken seriously. Without all the information, the end result could never be fair. It was not. I felt that Katharine was very unprofessional at times. She would talk to me about how my ex-husband’s attorney would say bad things about him and say they laughed about him. It actually made me wonder if she said bad things about me to HIS attorney. Again, I am so disappointed - actually disgusted.

I hired Holly Wall on 8/23/16 to represent me in a child custody dispute. I fired her and she was subsequently relieved by the court as my counsel on 11/7/16. After being relieved it took her 66 days to refund the “unearned” portion of my initial $3000 payment. I was given multiple dates by Ms. Wall on which to expect my refund. Pay special attention to her invoice. She billed me for meeting that did not occur. Almost HALF of my bill ($2,300) was due to “emails” and “research” according to her invoice. She has refused every request by me to clarify these charges by giving me specifics. It is simply impossible for me to confirm if the entries are legitimate when they are recorded in such general terms. It should be a worry to any client when their attorney, who is accustomed to writing and parsing complex legal documents, suddenly becomes so lax when describing the tasks in her invoice. This is by design. When the only time an attorney gets frugal with her clients time is in the description of tasks in her invoice that should be a red flag to the client because the attorney is possibly committing fraud on the client. Due to her conduct I requested my file from Ms. Wall. In my file she included paperwork from another family court case that I have no knowledge of. At one time she had two law offices. The first closed and I now see that her primary and only office building is for sale. Possible financial difficulties. You were warned.

I hired attorney Holly H. Wall to represent me in a family court dispute involving my only child. I paid her $3000 and signed a business contract concerning her representation at our initial meeting. About a month after I hired her opposing counsel sent her a proposed consent order which she in turn sent to me by way of a third party with the instructions that I read it and let her know if I was in agreement to what it contained. She never bothered explaining any part of the order to me either by person or by phone. As a result of my agreement to this consent order I was required to go to mediation with a therapist my ex-wife had already selected for our daughter. I quickly found out what an "aligned therapist" was. Not only did Holly Wall allow me to go to the opposing attorney's handpicked therapist she also failed to advise me that there are no confidentiality rights in court ordered mediation. I unfortunately found this out when the therapist sent a "status report" to the family court judge concerning what we had discussed in mediation. When I fired Holly Wall it took over 60 days from the time that the court released her as my attorney until the day that I received her partial refund. I was given three different dates by Holly on which to expect my refund. I quickly found that an attorney who misappropriates client funds will also engage in fraudulent billing. Over half of the $2,300 I was charged is for "emails" and "research". She refuses to give me any details concerning these charges. After I fired her I requested a copy of my file. Holly Wall recklessly included paperwork form another family court case in the file that she sent me. Here is what hurts the most. When I fired Holly Wall and quit the mediation the consent order I had previously signed made all contact between myself and my daughter at the discretion of the therapist. After quitting therapy I made a complaint about the therapist functioning in dual roles (therapeutic and forensic) at which time he withdrew his services. Due to my ex-wife's stagnation in finding another therapist I would not see my daughter in almost a year. I would have never agreed to the consent order had I fully understood what entailed. On July 21, 2017 the Supreme Court's Office of Disciplinary Counsel notified me that they were going to conduct an investigation. No matter their finding I won't ever get back all that has been lost. Run from this piece of trash.

She went speechless in our hearing and let the defense walk all over us and her. Ultimately leaving us trampled and falsely accused in front of a court full of family and friends.  She stood there, flipping through paperwork, shaking, not knowing the answers to the judges questions which she had in front of her. After paying her a 5 digit retainer "the Butcher" just gave up and convince my husband to give in to the defendants demands and settle. She would only go to trial and continue to help us fight for custody if we paid her another 5 digit + retainer. She was timid, easily intimidated and unprepared. Not worth the money! Do not recommend for complicated custody cases!

My husband and I used Janet, in a custody battle. Janet was like a pit bull. She never backed down. She kept us informed every step of the way, and always kept our daughter's, (my step-daughter) best interest at heart. She was up against a very unsavory laywer, who often lied to his own client, for his own best interest. It's usually very hard for a father to gain custody instead of the mother, without serious cause against the mother, but we won our case. We gained custody of my husband's daughter. She has now graduated high school, and will be off to college in the fall. I have also reccomended Janet Butcher to other friends, who need a feisty pit bull on their case.

Janet failed on every level. I hired her to represent me and instead it felt like she was working on behalf of the other attorney. She did not keep me informed nor did she explain why she chose to go against everything we agreed to do. She prefers to make you settle out of court even if all the terms are not in your favor. Be careful to take any advice from her and do not trust her! She currently has a lawsuit pending against her.

Don't even waste your time. It's seems as though they work for the employers because their service is terrible. I don't care how many messages you leave, they don't return phone calls. I finally gave up and just let the case go. It was as stressful as my job.

I didn't like the outcome Once I got the position statement and my employer was telling lies. I felt like I was somewhere when I responded on my rebuttal. The Investigator Ashley Smith made it worse by delaying it and wasted my time she said that she will help me but felt like she was against me which make my chances very bleak. No Stars.

I would advise against hiring for representation! She was hired and paid the full retainer. Never did anything for my case. I even took all the documents needed for court documents to be filed.

These people don't care about anything. These lil towns get away with so much. There is so much swept under the rug from the Court in Walhalla to the police in Seneca and so on.. There needs to be a deep investigationon in Oconee county, from the judges to the officers. Everyone is family of family and that's how things go on in these small towns so you can't get any help from anybody without them teaming up

This Attorney handled my Divorce and it was the WORST experience of my life!!! He turned a simple divorce into a 2 year process… I had to constantly call him "which there is never an answer" I could only communicate with him through email and it usually took him weeks to reply. I saw him twice in the 2 years that it took to get my divorce finalized. He was very unprepared in court.. thank God that I had a Judge that was looking out for my best interest!!! Please stay away from Thomas Eppink!!! This is not personal, I just don't want anyone to go through what I went thorough with him. I trusted that mr Eppink would do his job and he did not. I had to speak with another Attorney to complete the necessary paperwork to enforce the Judges order. I never received my divorce papers from thomas eppink. When I tried calling him and emailing him about my divorce documents he never replied until months later, and by that time I had gone and picked them up myself. He mailed me a notorized copy of my "Financial Declaration" stating that it was my divorce papers. "How sad is that"!!! Please don't allow this man to ruin your life. He can make you believe that he is a confident attorney. Once he gets your MONEY.. you will not hear from him!! I feel its my duty to try and prevent someone else from going through what I went through..

Was retained the beginning of weekend, and discharged the ending of the weekend. But was charged as if work was actually performed. Also did not get back all of the retainer, nor the alleged work that was supposed to have been done on the case. Was told that he did work over the week-end and that's why I was billed. Was told he would ask for a continuance. but never contacted other attorney. So actually no work was ever done on the case, he just keep the money. And the Good ole boy system is letting him get away with it. Was retained on a weekend in the late evening, and services were terminated two days later the following work morning. If he asked for a continuance the other attorney did not know anything about it. The alleged work was not returned to the client. I was charged for the work, then the billable hours/work becomes the property of the client. No work was really done on my behalf, he just kept the money.

I hired Lauren the summer of 2015 after my now ex-husband and I decided to separate with the intention of divorce. From the beginning Lauren was very involved in my case, making sure that I would get the best outcome from a divorce. She was great about answering all of my questions whether by phone, email, or office consultation. I also felt like she was very knowledgeable of divorce law and what I could or could not expect in our decree (such as not getting alimony since we weren’t married long enough to for sure be eligible). I also felt like she had great insight with what a judge would approve of if it came to us not agreeing on something. I fully trusted Lauren to represent me. In fact, I am now back in contact with her concerning some worries that I have related to the decree. I would 100% hire Lauren to represent me again should I end up back in court.

My first experience hiring an attorney and I would've came out no differently had I represented myself. She waited around stating it didn't matter who filed for divorce first when it most definitely is in the advantage of the person who files first. She told me we would have no issues getting my divorce on physical cruelty as I was the victim of domestic violence and turns out my injuries "did not meet the standard of the law" to get a divorce on physical cruelty which a good lawyer should know the laws and standards of those laws. Then she strongly encouraged me to admit to things that totally went against me in court that the other party did not have proof of anyway nor would've been able to prove had my attorney not told me to admit that had nothing to do with my reason for divorce. Needless to say attorneys work together and not for the individual client but for money and how much they can suck out of you. My divorce should've been simple no properties together no children together and only married 5 months. All I asked was for my medical bills paid for as my husband beat me to the pt of seeking hospital care and he was arrested on CDV and of course my $3,000 attorney fee paid and I didn't get either. All Maurice law firm got me was an empty pocket! My experience with maurice law firm was not positive. Dont let me forget they kept highlighting 5he fact they "discounted" my fee to help me out yet I was "paid in full" prior to our final court date which consisted of $2,000 that was supposed to include final court hearing yet after the final court date I then owed $660 more for nothing. So in the end I was left with $2,660 in attorney debt and $3,000 in medical bills due to apparently my attorney not knowing the standards of the law. Yeah okay I got divorced and away from my husband but then again I would've still gotten divorced representing myself and saving $2,660.

Same experience as the below indivilual below. Thirteen (13) months of a horribly bad experience, when a divorce is hard enough. Very unprofessional. When I complained about his non-responseness he would claim he always returned calls. He would blamed me for not getting his messages. That I had him blocked or my mail server was not working properly. I do not have a server. I was asked to fill out my own legal documents. Which he has not served to the court. Zero legal advise. Nothing accomplished. Already paid him over 8K and he is still billing me. My X's lawyer has done the agreement work so far. Haskins has give my X's lawyer permission to work directly with me.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
