This attorney was handling a sale matter and was never corresponding with the other attorneys, could not be counted on for an answer, dragged her heals at every opportunity, never worked in the best interest of her client, only for billable hours. Never Never again

Thomas Floyd treated me and looked at me with so much disdain, he tried to trick me at every turn. I was never able to get ahold of him via phone, nor would he return my calls and his secretary was so rude and spoke as if she was straight out of the ghetto. We had to wait 3 hours before we could see the judge, yet he refused to speak to me until 5 minutes before we was to go on record. He had dried spittle in the corners of his mouth and what looked like spaghetti sauce on the side of his face. He made it obvious his only intention was to scare me into pleading guilty. The whole incident was on two separate videos 5 minutes in length at most yet he hadn’t bothered to watch it, even though he had possession of it for a few months and it was my second time speaking to him. The video proved that I was innocent of any wrongdoing but he claimed he hadn’t watched it, although he could have been lying to claim ignorance and convince me I had no case. Either way it was pretty sleazy, which is how I would describe him. Both sleazy and incompetent. It was embarrassing watching him in action with his other clients in front of the judge. Every time the judge asked him if he had anything to say on behalf of his client he would shuffle some folders in front of him nervously with his hands trembling then say, “N-N-N-no your honor.” Even the judge looked at him with disdain. My first words when I left the court room was “Dear lord I gotta get another attorney!” He is pathetic and the picture perfect example of a backwoods crooked lawyer who’s only purpose is to railroad his clients and save the state time and money. He should retire and find a new career. He obviously doesn’t have the intellect to be an attorney even if he tried. I’m just glad I got away from him before he could do any lasting damage.

I hired this attorney for a sure win medical malpractice case, For 3 years he led me on whenever I talked to him, when he decieded he wanted to talk to me, because most of the time he wouldn't take or return my calls or emails, but whenever I talked to him he made me think he was getting right on it, well my worst fears came true, he let the statue of limitations run out, then made me to think we just didn't have a case, but for 3 years we did, he was just trying to cover for hisself, do not hire this lawyer.

South Carolina Attorney, William A. Hodge, allowed me to stay in jail for 27 months, when unbeknownst to me at the time, there was a court order for my release after 14 days. I have filed a civil rights action against Hodge and others. Visit: https://unicourt.com/case/pc-db5-laconey-v-lott-et-al-998465

Brown is not someone I would recommend to anyone. He might talk a good game, but beware. He filed a petition for me in Family Court that was thrown out because it was not properly done nor pursued. The court warned him that his petition was flawed. He did nothing to correct it. Hence, the matter was stricken from the record. Do not waste your time with him.

I hired her to represent me a few years ago. She was very unknowledgeable about the issues, and very unprofessional, going as far as to call me. I ended up getting my issues resolved through my own efforts, having to go around my own attorney to do so. Turns out, she never filed expungement papers for the dropped charges, so I had to pay another lawyer now to do so. Because of this crucial mistake on her part, I did not get a job I should have otherwise gotten. Very disappointed.

My experience with Holly was one of unprofessional ism and lack of experience. She was intimidated by the opposing lawyer and came off very weak. She asked for a $2600.00 retainer fee, accomplished nothing, kept all but $700.00 and dropped me without explanation. She did not like the fact that she was questioned or gave an opinion. I would think twice or look up her track record before hiring her...

To not respond to the client at all is a total disrespect and i will never use or recommend this law firm to anyone. you would expect better service as the customer but that isn't the case.

In the 90's I felt Doug worked very hard for his clients, even if it meant going to court or even arguing on appeal at the SC Supreme Court. I hired him in 2019 for 4 cases. He managed to sidestepped me on all 4. When we got to the end of the 4th case he grew irritated. I mentioned Luke Rankin and the heartbeat bill, and reading that Doug wanted the Master in Equity position. I have no idea how, but somehow he got the feeling that I thought I had the power to get Luke to endorse him in exchange for his legal services. I don't know Luke that well even if I wanted him to endorse Doug. He said I wasn't paying. I had just given him $4,300 leaving under $2000 owed him on the case. I would have paid that prior to the end of the case which was soon. I still have the email that he twisted to say I wanted him to exchange his fees for Lukes endorsement. The email he was referring to which I still have said nothing of a kind. He withdrew from my case at the end, so no other atty would take it.

My husband went to Tyler for legal advise as we felt we were paying too much in child support. He ran some numbers and made us feel we had a good case. He sent out a demand letter to his ex-wife and she came back attorney represented. No surprise there. He pretty much tells us that he doesn't want to go up against her attorney and recommends others. We felt thankful and duped at the same time. Thankful that at least he was honest before sinking $$ into him but duped as we we felt he left us hanging.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
