Kelly represented me in my divorce following a 32 year marriage. She is extremely competent in divorce law, and her warm, caring demeanor made a very difficult process bearable. Kelly was always extremely prompt in responding to any questions or concerns I had, and her attention to detail made a big difference in the results of my case. I greatly appreciate that she is a sharp shooter who doesn’t sugarcoat things. I highly recommend Kelly to anyone who has to go through the brutal experience of a divorce.

Nightmare Experience: Failed Commitment, Unprofessionalism, and Disrespect As a single mom navigating a tumultuous divorce, I turned to Balzer & Leary in 2012 with hopes of securing a DRO that was crucial for my future financial stability. What I received instead was frustration, financial strain, and emotional turmoil. Initially, Balzer & Leary closed my file prematurely back in 2012, failing to complete the DRO as promised. Fast forward ten years and countless struggles later, I discovered their egregious error. What then ensued was a two-year battle, exacerbated by financial hardship and immense stress, to rectify THEIR negligence. (To which Attorney Leary blames the USPS and the then "knit wit" comptroller. His words) Despite finally achieving acceptance of the DRO in 2022, my experience with Attorney Leary was nothing short of appalling. He arrogantly touted himself as an expert, dismissing my concerns and even yelling at me during our interactions. His unresponsiveness was matched only by his demand for payment before any work commenced, demonstrating a clear lack of empathy or understanding of my situation. Throughout this ordeal, I never felt protected or valued as a client. Instead, Attorney Leary and the firm, prioritized their own interests over mine, making me feel like an inconvenience rather than someone deserving of respect and support. As a single mother fighting to secure what was rightfully mine in the aftermath of an abusive divorce, I needed a lawyer who would provide guidance and reassurance. Instead, Attorney Leary added to my distress, leaving me to question their competence and commitment to their clients, especially women in vulnerable positions. I am compelled to share this review to warn others, particularly fellow single mothers, about the deplorable treatment I endured at Balzer & Leary. Trust me, you deserve better representation than what Attorney Leary and this firm can offer. They do not deserve your trust, your time, or your hard-earned money.

I used the law firm to assist with my VA claims and I highly recommend! I hired the firm back in 2022 and they were with me every step of the way. Every time something changed or was denied I was on the phone with the firm and they always had a plan on how to fight the VA. I just received the best call I’ve received all year and it was from Mr. Dell himself advising me my rating went to a percentage I was extremely happy with. Thank you to the lawyers and paralegals that worked diligently on my case. Highly recommend!

Attorney Partick Sorsby Esq. was apathetic with me and the legal challenges I will be facing his week. He talked with my for 20 minutes, spelled out what I need to look up, know and say. He mentored me how what to and not to say and how to behave. A told of facts and tips. Patrick Sorsby Esq. I who I was as a legal counsel. I will keep you posted. Respectfully, J. J. Meyer

I had a horrible experience with Mark Pelersi when he served as my buyers attorney. He charged me $2,000 for a condo closing! I later found out that the seller was only charged $350 by his attorney for the same work. Mark also tried to push back my closing date which had been set for 6 weeks because he wanted to go on a last minute vacation with his family. Finally, Mark forgot to bring all the paperwork to the closing which delayed it. I would NOT recommend Mark Pelersi. He is expensive, arrogant, and took advantage of this young, unsuspecting home buyer.

I can't begin to express how grateful I am to The Towne Law Firm. The moment I walked into the office, I was greeted with professionalism and empathy. They not only listened to me but they heard me. The team I worked with was so helpful, empathetic and willing to help in any way. A big thank you to Chrissy and Claire S.for all their hard work and countless emails and phone calls. They were there for me professionally and with an empathetic listening ear anytime I was feeling overwhelmed. Also to Kayla M. for answering questions when I would call in. I hope I never need to hire an attorney but if I ever do I have NO question or hesitation on who to call. Thank you all so much!!! JESS ROSA

I think he is incompetent, doesn't return calls or answer emails. He took 1.5 yrs to execute an estate he was managing - I was a beneficiary (he originally said it should be resolved in 3-6 mos). When I finally received my payout, over half of the amount was subject to federal taxes (based on the accompanying K1). Tried to get an explanation, would not respond.

I’ll never forget frantically finding a lawyer back in the early 2000s when I was facing a very dangerous situation that involved my ex husband gaining custody of our three children. I didn’t know where to look but I saw an ad in the yellow pages and was later connected with Dominick. The entire process was so much more complicated than I anticipated but Dominick made it simple and easy for me to understand. He worked tirelessly and fought for my freedom from my ex husband and was able to gain full custody of my children. I trusted him with my life and he did not disappoint me. I am forever grateful.

Attorney Dom Brignola is an excellent lawyer. I trust him completely. I first worked with Dominick on the formation of a not-for-profit women's care ministry around 1987. And since 1991, he has legally represented our growing church, school, related programs and services. During this time we have amended our by-laws, purchased properties and dealt with dozens of minor and a few major legal issues. Dom has always been available and eager to help. He is also our family's lawyer. Attorney Dominick Brignola is always empathetic to our needs and a bold advocate in our corner.

My entire divorce settlement document and agreements were revealed over a 20 year time period to be fraudulent interpretations of what i was told those articles meant. What they wrote and what i was advised they meant legally, I signed in agreement to those fraudulent wordings, was a lie. Over the past 20 years it has affected my life and the lives around me with extremely serious consequences. Recently a 2 year old child that i was helping financially died as a result of one of those "wordings". My daughter and her 3 children are facing eviction from her home as I am helping her too through these rough financial times. I trusted Dominic to uphold my rights and the rights of my children. Sorry to say he did not support these rights.

Mr Assaf is a brilliant and talented attorney. As a single woman with an abusive ex and no local family Mr Assaf really stood up for me. As someone who has worked in the field Mr Assaf stands out. He is always available for his clients day and night. It’s a rare thing in the days where you can’t get an email back from an attorney in a timely fashion. Is he cheap? No. He bills more than fairly especially for the representation you get. He is well knowledgeable in many facets of law. I send everyone I know to him.

I’m not sure there are many things worse than spending time and energy, and for most of his negative reviews, money, only to find that your existence was cold-dropped after your effort and dedication was simply discarded. Following that experience you’re left with the heartache, frustration, and loss that you went to him with in the first place, Yet, now you’ve wasted time and have potentially lost everything. Do not hire.

I hired Adriel Colon-Casiano after a referral from Gabriella Romero about my landlord. After retaining Mr. Colon, he effectively did nothing for my case. Even getting a hold of him through emails, phone, certified mail regarding a status on my case would not prompt any response for months. After requesting my file by certified mail, it took contacting the grievance committee and making him aware to get my file and retainer back. Upon reviewing my file, no visible work was completed, no proof of calls or files sent as stated he had already done. Mr. Colon lacks the organizational, communication, and integrity to be a lawyer.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
