Brent really helped understand my case and triage what needed to happen. There were multiple steps in my case and he let me know what should happen every step of the way. He made this incredibly sensitive and hard time, more manageable. I would hire him again in a heartbeat.

He did not represent my child. He considered my child's abuse a joke. He talked down to me like I was a nobody and literally took sides with the abusive ex during the cps investigations, court hearings, did not listen to the findings of the interviews with son's counselor and family court social workers. I finally won my case but even when ex decided to sign an agreement due to overwhelming evidence, Jim Cobb still tried to talk him out. He literally put my child through hell in the name of being his lawyer.

He "represented" me, has failed to return multiple phone calls or emails. When or IF he did return the emails it was one or a partial sentence if that. He only agreed to what the other attorney asked for, didn't stand up, deal, NOTHING. I could have done that on my own for free. The divorce ended up costing me thousands, dragged for almost 2 years, and a monthly child and spouse support of $2200, I make $50k per year.

This lady is the worst communicator. You have to squeeze every ounce of information from her. Even your court date! She can’t let you know unless you ask her. She is stubborn and very rude. Customer service is not a term she is familiar with. I hired her for a devorce case and was thoroughly disappointed in her. She wouldn’t do anything until I pushed her. She would not pass any information along. Not even the court date. When I asked her she said “ I don’t know what you would do with that info”. That was after waiting for a whole month for updates on the case. She misspelled names on my case but still refused to take responsility. She removes you from the picture like you don’t matter in your own case. Please look elsewhere for representation. Don’t waste your $$. I was so tempted to fire her so many times but because of the scarcity of resources I put up with her. Thankfully she completed the case albeit the pathetic, menial outcomes. I sometimes thinks I would do a better job representing myself.

Hired her to represent me in my Divorce. The communication with her was not great at all. She received an temporary court order and did not notify me to attend court nor did she provide me a copy of the signed temporary order. Which resulted in a motion for contempt. She came to court on the motion totally not prepared which resulted in my ex not being held accountable for his contempt charge. I however received the shorter end of the stick due to the lack or representation. She then decided to remove herself from my Divorce case 16 days before trial. The paralegal are oblivious to what is going on as well Total waiste of money.

This lawyer, and I use the term loosely, uses her place in family court to reign terror over families. She is supposed to be an advocate for children yet breaks every right a child has. Knowingly Allows foster parents that are pedophiles to keep children even when the children report it to her. Her need to control is is more important than upholding the law. My family experienced this first hand. Please do not let this woman near your family. You will regret it!!!

I hired her to be a voice for my daughter in a custody case. Big mistake, she bullied and manipulated my daughter and did the same with me. She clearly expresses favoritism and lacks the ability to present facts in a case. She accuses people of doing things that are inappropriate inwriting but when confronted she denies or hangs up on you. I had to continually request for a year and a half for a copy of her itemized statement of her time on case, she would respond that she doesn't have to provide that to me. She is unprofessional and her demeanor has left my child and I afraid of her due to manipulative attacks and lack of knowledge in the court system. We have filed a formal complaint and can only pray that action is taken before she can ruin another person's life and case.

this attorney was not even hired. went to him for advise. he told me to sign documents and stated i won't charge your temporary disablity payments until you call and tell him that his service will be needed. He started billing my employment workers comp insurance company 25% before i asked for his service. So i went to Texas injured employees counsel to get my money back. We went before a hearing officer. He was ordered to pay back/reimburse the money back within 15 days. It took multiple phone calls and a official complaint letter to get my money back from this CROOK. I was going to send him a 10 day letter, call the police and file with police or JP court to get my money back.

Hired this attorney, he was seen on video on a few seconds, leaves everything to assistants and keeps no official records. Bills everything on his actions and amounts rather than what assistants do. Goes into hearings and admits he does not keep records, and will say anthing to avoid having to admit he does not know what he is doing or how to conduct his business. Made the statement to me" If you want to know what is going on in your case talk to my assistant as I dont know anything about your case" and then passed me to his assistant who knew everything except that he was receiving my money and putting it into his account without my knowledge and consent. Had to go to President of company he works for to get repayment of unauthorized funds he deposited to his attorney account

This lawyer drew up a will and trust several years ago. In October, he was asked to make some very simple updates and amendments to the will and trust: to provide current addresses and in the will to change a beneficiary. We hoped to have this completed before moving to another town. He was asked to update the financial power of attorney and the medical power of attorney. For this he charged nearly $1000. He cashed the check the very next day. The forms were supposed to be mailed to us, we would have them witnessed and notarized, copied, and send them back. That was two months ago. I sent a registered letter demanding the changes and a return of the original will. The USPS says that they tried to deliver it on a Monday, left a notice for the letter to be picked up. That was three weeks ago. There was one phone call from a clerk saying that she needed the names of the people who would witness the signature to type them into the document. I explained that the names of the witnesses, who will be strangers at the UPS office, would be printed in when they witnessed the signature and it was notarized. I asked about the registered letter. The clerk said she did not know anything about it. I do regret raising my voice to the clerk; that was wrong of me. More time has passed and Mr. Kolton still has not returned the will, has not sent the amendments, has not refunded our money, let alone an apology. I do not know what is going on with Mr. Kolton since he has not sent me any communication at all. I do know that in two months time he has failed to deliver very simple amendments or to refund our money. If he ever does provide the services for which he has already cashed the check, I would be happy to post again. I would remind anyone of ordinary means wanting to write a will in Texas, that our Congress has made it very easy. In Texas, one can simply write out a will or go to an office supply store and buy a "fill in the blank" or a CD that will guide one through. Cost: Less than $30.

At the second meeting, my husband and I had questions regarding the paperwork he asked us to complete. Instead of guiding us through this very stressful, foreign and difficult process, he made us feel inferior and berated us when we asked questions. He eventually asked us if we wanted to come back (so we could be more prepared in his eyes). When we decided we would he threw my papers at me and stormed out of his office. My husband and I are college educated people with degrees and he was so arrogant and condescending. I have never been treated that way.

I hired this woman to help me obtain legal status so I could gain custody of my child who was and now still is in a desperate and abusive home. Knowing the other party was going to use my immigration status against me at the time, Although she was always very hard to get in touch with I had her appear in court with me at a custody hearing. Not only did she not try to step in and prevent my arrest after that hearing when it went down, she failed to file the Stay of deportation forms that would have kept me in the US and probably saved my child from more abuse at the hands of his mother and grandmother. I now have not seen my child for nearly 4 years, and my wife in more than a year! At the time of my deportation I asked Ms Lane about the Waiver process and she knew absolutely nothing about it, then stopped responding to calls from myself and my wife...Did she realize she had failed to file a simple paper that would have saved my child and my family a mountain of heartache, or did she cut us off because I could no longer pay her fees? Either way, she failed me when I trusted in her. My son is now suffering physical and psychological abuse that is worse than ever... I would not recommend her because of her lack of knowledge and her failure to file a very common form after having been paid to protect me! I had a happy family, a great job and was attempting to do the right thing in regard to my status. I fully acknowledge my mistake in not obtaining legal status as a young man in first coming to this country however, I live a good and honest life and trusted in Ms Lane to help me so I could protect my child.... and now we both are suffering, because of of my youthful lack of knowledge years ago and her lack of knowledge and negligence!

I would NOT recommend this attorney. He was rude over the phone and continually interrupted me while I was trying to explain my situation to him. He talked down to me in such a self-important tone that I felt like I was a waste of his time. The only positive thing I can say is that he took my call immediately when the receptionist put me on hold. Otherwise, buyer beware.

Right now, I can't imagine a worse fate than Charles Maduka being my lawyer. Mr. Maduka was inflicted on me by the Court. As my court appointed attorney he has never once acted as my advocate . To the contrary, as "my attorney" , Mr Maduka continues to disregard his obligation as my legal representative . He couldn't care less and remains permissive while my rights as a defendant reasserted by Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and fundamental and guaranteed by the Constitution are disregarded. It is on every level and it is obvious . He repeatedly asking me to sign inaccurately dated information. I could go on for days.. He could not provide one example of anything he has done as my advocate

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
