A friend of mine recommended DAVID WOLFE LEOPOLD & ASSOCIATES CO to me. I was not disappointed. I was getting nowhere with my ‘case’ with the authorities and after discussion with David he took me as a client. He gave me great advise and he knew exactly what to do. Once he ‘filed’ my case, he diligently followed up with both the authorities and myself for a period of 13 months. His perseverance and due diligence proved worthy and my case was won.

Chuck has worked with our various entities on over 30 matters. From landlord/tenant disputes (both sides), contract litigation, evictions, multi-million dollar property acquisitions, and even an adverse possession claim, he has handled each matter with professionalism and competence. For more complex matters, he has built a team of other attorneys and professionals with the skills and experience to get each unique situation resolved. He works diligently on every case, communicating effectively with us along the way. He has gone far above and beyond anything I have ever expected, often handling the roles of attorney, advisor, and negotiator. Chuck also has a unique ability to keep calm and collected in situations where the opposing litigant (and occasionally the opposing counsel) has been extremely unreasonable and/or aggressive. This calm has allowed us to settle matters that, had cooler heads not prevailed, would have gone to trial, costing us far more in legal expenses and given us an uncertain outcome.

Chuck Royer literally saved my practice. Initially, he was brought in as co-council (to avoid being "homered") for the corporate attorney who was originally representing me. As time went on the other attorney became difficult to reach and was delaying a settlement by dragging his feet. When it became painfully apparent that the case was not being handled in a way that was in my best interest, Chuck took over at my request and settled the case within 2 weeks. Not only could the law suit have dragged on another two or three months, but it would have cost me a fortune, and left me bankrupt. Further delay would also have turned the judge against me since my side would have been responsible for the delay in reaching a settlement. Instead of remaining in the backseat and watching my case slip away while still being paid as a bystander (co-council) as a third attorney did, Chuck listened to my concerns, showed compassion for my situation and quietly took charge, while still maintaining good terms with my other attorneys who were nonetheless valuable for arguing the details of my case. Even though he was brought into the case five months after it had begun and as one of three attorneys representing me, Chuck was able to distill the case into its essential parts, identify what key elements had to be accomplished in order to reach a settlement, and then saw to it that all the players (including my other attorneys, the judge, and the opposing council) acted in a timely fashion in order to push the long over due settlement through. Chuck Royer is an extremely competent attorney, but his compassion for me, his client, is what made him uniquely qualified to settle a case that two other attorneys could not. Thank you, Chuck!

Bill took a very difficult medical malpractice case and spent the time and hard work to win it for our family. His hard work insured great care for our son and college educations for his brother and sister. At one point in the case expenses were $36,000 and a settlement was reached of $27,000 with one of the defendants. Bill insisted we take the $27,000 without deducting expenses. He said we'll catch up later. Over the next 6 years we became great friends because he cared, we were not just another case. To this day he still means the world to all of us. I recommend Bill and his firm to you without reservation.

After I got hurt, it was important to my family that I had a honest, ethical attorney that would focus on providing answers about what went wrong during my surgery. My family and I were lucky to have Peter Weinberger represent us with both strength and integrity. The attorneys at Spangenberg Shibley & Liber have spent years working on my case, and are responsible for giving me answers that I would have otherwise never gotten in my medical malpractice case. - Lauren W. - Shaker Heights, Ohio‎

Dustin Herman represented my husband and me in a product liability case involving a defective hip implant. Over months of preparation Dustin was always there or just a phone call away. Through the countless elements of preparation Dustin’s knowledge, involvement, organizational skills and thoroughness were ever present. He is a great communicator and he took whatever time necessary to answer all questions and to ensure that we completely understood the step-by-step process. He is personable, diligent, and tireless. Most of all he truly cares. I consider him a trusted advisor and I would highly recommend him.

My wife and I had an adoption that was finalized and then vacated two months later. When the adoption was vacated my previous attorney refused to return our calls and left us in the dark while we were in the process of moving out of state. I simply did not know what had just happened. I sent out over 50 emails to Cleveland Attorneys during the Christmas Season hoping that one of them would be able to explain what had just happened. Most did not respond and the ones that did told me they did not practice in my county or did not work in adoption law. Early January, Attorney Barrett called me and we spoke. She reviewed my case and explained what happened. My wife and I hired her and she quickly began to clean up a messy situation. Our case will be ongoing for a while and I am confident that I have found the best adoption attorney in Ohio. Whatever result we achieve will be the best that can be achieved. Attorney Barrett always responds quickly, is upfront with you on what to expect and never gives false expectations, extremely prepared, and has a tenacity that many attorneys do not have when it comes to adoption. I wish I had known Attorney Barrett prior to this adoption. If I had, then my finalized adoption would never have been vacated. I made the mistake of hiring a general practitioner to handle my adoption case because I did not know any better. That mistake cost me. When it comes to your family and your adoption, hire the best. Do your research and know-how experienced your possible attorney is with adoption law. You will be surprised at how many don't really know much about it. I highly recommend Attorney Barrett. It is hard to find an attorney that specializes in adoption and surrogacy.

I contacted Grace word-to-mouth. She handled some very personal/emotional situations for me quickly, fairly and never made me feel like a number. Her caring gives you a sense of comfort while still being professional. She 'gracefully' removed all stress related to legal actions especially during trying times, IE: unexpected death of a loved one and uncertainties of estate planning. I am very grateful for the recommendation.

Attorney Cullen G. Sweeney is truly an honest, trustworthy and very loyal to his clients. He always returns my phone calls and answers all my questions taking time even when he is in a hurry to go to court. He has always kept me informed and updates me when I inquire. He currently represents me on a (Adam Walsh Act) and has since had me removed from the sexual offender registry (E.S.O.R.N) after The Great State of Ohio decided to make a new law that would keep me on the list for another 5 years after finishing 10 for a low end felony sex offense. I have to say he is taking my case now to the Supreme Justice's of our land to find true fairness of the law. I have served my time in jail and have had my face glued on the website and haven't had any other sexual offenses or would have never been on the list to begin with good legal counsel. Thank You Attorney Sweeney for making my life easier to breath and keep doing a great job.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
