I had a traffic citation case open with this law firm. Before my consultation appointment I emailed them the ticket to review. The attorney was busy so he was 20 minutes late to return my call during our scheduled appointment. He was not helpful or knowledgeable at all. Because if he looked carefully at my ticket, there is already a court date listed to show up in person. He kept telling me to send in a ‘not guilty’ slip myself and get a court date then call him back… He also spoke down to me in a very rude tone like he couldn’t care for my business. Well, I found a new attorney who sounded much more knowledgeable within the next hour. If you don’t want my business, you won’t have it!

I went to Alyssa traumatized and vulnerable, similar to most people seeking a divorce attorney. After 5 long years, I paid her $130,000 and never even went to trial. I was left with no child support from an abusive ex-husband along with shared legal custody. She made countless mistakes on drafts of documents and engaged in an extremely adversarial dialogue with me when corrections needed to be made. I was so worn down and scared throughout the process, that I didn't protect myself against her. I should have switched counsel early on. Hindsight is 20-20. Aside from marrying my ex, hiring her was the biggest mistake of my life.

This has been a nightmare from day one. This woman Alyssa Eisner was referred by my best friend and has just taken me for a ride. She was hired to represent me and has done nothing to help me. All she cares about is her ego and dragging matters out to extort as much money as possible from her clients,. I have a court date right after 4th of July weekend and she has just abandoned me right before my court appearance. I paid her a large retainer just a few weeks ago and she is asking me for an additional 10k and we have never even seen a courtroom. She is rude and extremely arrogant. I am left with no representation and no more money days before my appearance. My only hope is to call the bar association and ask for help and at the very least file a complaint. I lost all my Money with this firm and am still at square one. DO NOT EVER USE THIS FIRM THEY INHUMANE VULTURES!!! I am worried about losing my child and she is using my emotions against me and refuses to show up in court After I’ve already paid her thousands. She charged me hundreds of dollars for any email or communication. I am left praying to god for help at this point as she has left me broke and alone with no representation!! She lacks moral compass and shows a complete lack of empathy!!

This lawyer will charm you and ‘yes’ you to death on your initial consultation. You will think that she will go to ‘bat’ for you. Once she has you as a client, her demeanor will change to a cold, crass, inaccessible lawyer who is incapable of empathy or caring. You can count on her not returning calls ..you can count on her not doing her homework ..bullying you and finally ..taking your money and then not fighting on your behalf. If she had a shred of decency or honor she would and could have advised this client that their particular case did not warrant using a lawyer but instead she collected 10,000 dollars and then requested additional money...despite the fact that their was a cap on the fee .

Chris Renfroe, alongside his son Eric Renfroe, represented me in a wild case that ultimately lead to dismissal by the judge because Chris and Eric know the law. They know how the legal system works, they have a highly refined understanding of varied interpretations of the law and they are an awesomely surgical trial team. As Chris often said, we had the facts, and he stuck to that. Chris handled my case with the utmost of care and concern for my well being, looking out for my best interest at every step of the way. He went to bat for me multiple times, he really heard me even when we disagreed and he took the time to understand when some aspects of my case appeared convoluted or confusing. The entire process was a family endeavor and the Renfroe's certainly treated me as such. There were many times when I didn't feel comfortable because of my situation but the Renfroe's guided me through. Frank and Mrs. Shapiro were a welcome respite from all the nitty gritty details that engulfed my case and I found them both compassionate, honest and super intelligent. The truth is that I can only speak highly of each of them and I can honestly say that Chris will always do his best. Luckily for those of us who have him as representation, his best is the best.

I needed to get my tenant out so that I can sell my property. I called Robert Tolle to start a 30 day notice and was told I missed the cut off but they would be able to rush it for me so that I didn't lose a month. My tenant didn't move so I had to do papers to go to court. Mr. Tolle met me in court 2 weeks later and I was able to make an agreement with my tenant for her to be out in 2 months. I ordered a warrant of eviction which I was told it takes 6-8 weeks but mine came in in 5 weeks which I was very pleased. My tenant is now out and I can sell the property. I would highly recommend this attorney.

I made the biggest mistake by hiring Robert tolle to represent me. He's done absolutely nothing for the past 4 months since I hired him. He's never reviewed my case prior to court dates. The office does not follow up with the marshals and I have to constantly keep calling myself. Jackie constantly says "we should receive the paper/document soon". It's been over months since I'm waiting for the paper work to evict my tenant. Absolutely useless.

I hired Robert Tolle to represent me to evict a holdover tenant and I did not find him to be very effective. Based upon his performance, I would NOT hire him again nor do I recommend him for landlord/tenant cases. From the date I hired him, it took MORE than 6 MONTHS for the tenants to move out. The tenants did exactly what they wanted to do and moved out when it was convenient for them and left the apartment a mess. The tenant did not have an attorney. I believe I would have been better off had I not hired Robert Tolle. Robert was not very responsive, I tried repeatedly to call Robert to discuss the case PRIOR to the date of scheduled appearances and he rarely returned my phone calls and was not available to speak with me before the day of most court appearances to prepare. Infact, there was one occasion where I did not have the documents that would have helped my case because Robert Tolle did not return my call and did not speak to me before the day of the scheduled court appearance. During one appearance, he offerred to pay the tenants OVER $1000.00 to move out WITHOUT FIRST OBTAINING my PERMISSION or speaking with me about the offer. Fortunately, the tenant declined "his offer." I was not in a financial position to pay the tenants the amount he offered especilly since the tenant had stopped paying rent. There was also one instance when Robert did not follow my explicit instruction and it caused a problem. Moreover, at no time did Robert Tolle sit down with me to discuss and fully explain the case, my various options, and the various potential outcomes despite my many attempts to do so. He often showed up to court at the last minute, had many clients to represent and did not have enough time to meaningfully discuss the case the on date of the appearances. I wish Robert would have cared about my case and providing vigorous and effecive representation as he did about collecting his fee.

When I hired Ms. Harris, I knew I made the right choice. In our consultations, she told me exactly what she was going to do to win my case. She charged me a very reasonable price, and if I called her, she answered straight away. She answered all my questions and she won my case. A few years later, my brother ran into some legal issues. She charged him a reasonable price and won his case, too. She is fantastic and a miracle worker.

I wish I heard of AVVO.com prior to hiring Mr. Nivins office. At least then, I could have read the only review left by an actual client, to which she descibes the exact same unfortunate interaction I experienced with his office. 1). I never actually got a chance to speak with Mr Nivin until after he billed me for work that was never done. 2). The worst part of the experience is not that he refuses to send my file, but like the first reviewers experience, he shared sensitive information with the opposing party. He actually has no problem threatening to disclose sensitive information in carefully worded emails (which I have kept and would be happy to share with anyone). He is currently holding my entire case for randsom because I refused to pay the first invoice in which there are charges for conferences which never took place, along with a host of other outlandish charges. The sad part is he will most likely get away with it because I don't have the money to fight this kind of shakedown. Lastly, I would really pay very special attention to his video advertisement on the company website. He talks directly into the camera about experiences and services offered. Watch his body language. I'm kicking myself for not trusting my initial impression of this video and also, for not reading other reviews first. (I'm sure he will either take down the video or replace it by the time this gets published). Beware.... If he can take all of my unemployment / pandemic money without doing a fraction of the work, who knows what he will do with yours?

Mr Nivin was my lawyer for 3 almost 4 years. I retained him for a family court matter. I had my cousin's child. When I asked Mr. Nivin to help me get temporary custody so that I could remove the baby from foster care he instead requested that the court release him to me and just transfer the supervision to ACS. I asked him why he claimed temporary custody I would have to get fingerprinted. I told him I did not mind. I just wanted the child out of the system. With the child in the system I still would need a lawyer to continue to appear for me to protect my rights having temporary custody would have cut his billing off. The ACS worker told me to file for full custody so I did the papers myself and after I did that Mr. Nivin said he could represent me in that case. He failed to prosecute it though. He made appearance after appearance billing me $500 minimum even for appearances that were just 10 or 15 minute adjournments. One summer I was billed for 6 different adjournments that took less than 15 minutes a total of $3000. After I complained he said he would lower the price and charge me by the hour for those adjournments which would have cost me $60 to $90 an appearance. However the bills he sent did not reflect this instead he continued to charge me at that high rate. Eventually after more than a year and no movement whatsoever in my custody case I removed Mr. Nivin. I retained new counsel. I told Mr Nivin some information I do not wish to say here while he represented me. Somehow the opposing counsel on the case who shared office space with Mr Nivin found out that information after I terminated Mr. Nivin. Motions were made and it cost me a fortune to defend with my new counsel. I trusted Mr. Nivin cause a friend recommended. I did a much job with a lawyer I got from bar association after him. He took over my custody case and I got full legal custody in a hearing within a month of retaining him. I should have gone to the bar sooner. I would not have accrued so manu years of attorneys fees. Some attorneys help you resolve your case quickly some drag it on to keep making money off of you. Even if that is not in your best interest.

100% the WORSE lawyer, EVER!! I have a case in housing, with tenants that refuse to pay rent. I hired Jason Blau to help me evict them. He is horrible. He NEVER answers his phone or return calls/texts. I literally have to contact him from different phone numbers for him to answer. And i have stalk him in the courts just to follow up on my case. Can you imagine taking off work, to go to grand concourse court room just to ask him what is the status of my case. He always has the same response “just text me” but he never replies. I paid him ALL his fees and marshall fee, promtly. He will not follow up with me, but he is quick to catch my check, same day. I am so disappointment. Hence, I verbalized my concerns to him about his lack of attention to his cases, and yet nothing has changed. I am already in distress with tenants who havent paid their rent in over a year, I hire a lawyer, and he makes it even more difficult for me. He gives lawyers such a bad repution. If anyone has any questions about this attorney, I am providing my phone number, because I am transparent and I dont want someone else to make the same error I made- .

I understand why she is a public defender. My husband was accused of abusing his babymother. We have proof which she knew about that the babymother not only lied but she also is the aggressor. The babymother admitted to me in anger that she will stop at nothing to get him locked up. I had it both text messages voicemails and video. Yet my huwband was locked up twice visiting with his sickly mother. She has threatened us as well attacked us and attacked him several times. The babymother gave the court the wrong name further proving this was just a game. She insisited he plead guilty without reviewing the facts or maybe she did and she just did not care to share. Now although its a misdemeanor it is still a charge. So many years on the bar for what to keep allowing innocent people become victims and the alleged victims get away with murder.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
