The first two years of our our Ch. 13 bankruptcy were managed by another attorney (before having switched to Michael). Our previous representation often left us frustrated and unsure of the process. For many reasons, we decided to consult with other attorneys and I did extensive research to find someone reputable. I spoke with many and decided on Michael Spencer.
Michael reviewed our case history in GREAT detail and answered questions we were unable to get from our first attorney. Michael presented us with several options and included the pro's and potential con's of each. Although our 1st attn recommended a Ch.7, Michael STRONGLY advised against it because we had more home equity than the law allows us to protect and could lose our home! He is extremely detail oriented and knowledgeable of the law which I appreciate because he identified (and corrected) aspects of our case that had been mishandled by our previous attorney. Michael was able to rearrange our Ch. 13 plan so we were could pay it off and get an early discharge (nearly 3 yrs early)!
We appreciate Michael for his honesty and how well informed he kept us. He was easily accessible and responsive to our needs in a timely manner. I highly recommend Michael and wish we would have chose him first instead of having learned the hard way. We plan to work with him when we decide to create a Will/Trust.

I was in a bad auto accident in 2009 and have been in and out of surgery ever since. Like many of you, I had an insurance company that just would not budge when it came to paying the benefits that we are entitled to. My husband was in a motorcycle accident this last summer. I don't think people realize the turmoil that happens at a time like that to the spouse or caregiver. I contacted Varnum Law, the largest law firm in West Michigan and one of the largest in the state of Michigan after a rear end collision by a texting driver that left me with severe, chronic injuries that are life changing. I asked for the best and the toughest trial attorney that they had for personal injury and trial work. The receptionist said, "you must want to speak with Peter Smit." I had a phone conversation with Peter who then came to visit me at my home. I showed Peter my policy and he commented that I bought the right insurance because I had a $1,000,000 under insured and uninsured rider on my policy. Peter when to work and began to do the underlying work necessary to file a law suit against the woman that hit me and the owner of her car along with her insurance provider. Once Peter did her deposition and I did mine with the help of Peter's partner Bonnie Sawusch who is both an attorney and a registered nurse, the defendant's insurance carrier paid out the maximum on the policy and my insurance carrier which previously refused to pay any disability came to the table with an offer to settle the disability portion of the case with a healthy settlement that maximized the statutory amount allowed for disability in the State of Michigan.
Peter then immediately filed suit against my insurance company for the balance of the under insured liability which was a significant amount. We got all the way to two months before trial and had a settlement conference. Peter and Bonnie prepared a very strong offense as to why we deserved the maximum. The settlement conference produced a significant amount for us to settle the case which my wife and I decided was the best way to go. My cousin is an insurance defense lawyer. He told me that in fifteen years of insurance defense he has only paid out an amount near what we received twice in fifteen years. We ended up with a very healthy award between the defendant's policy payout, the disability and the award from my insurance carrier for breach of contract.
I watched all the ads on TV about 1-800 call some jackass in Detroit. I never gave it a thought. Varnum had done all of my intellectual property work and I knew the quality of the work they do. Peter had had jury awards and settlements far in excess of 1-800 call the jackass and being a highly respected and successful law firm Varnum has significant resources to pay up front the costs of litigation.
I would hire Peter Smit for any litigation that I have going forward and highly recommend Peter and his parter Bonnie Sawusch especially for cases that involve complex personal injury.
My wife and I were very pleased with the outcome and I can't begin to recommend Peter, Bonnie and Varnum Law enough. I don't call the first attorney in the phone book. I do my research and knew Varnum was the only firm that I wanted to represent me.

I wanted to commend attorney Brian Plachta for his help with my complicated legal matter. I consulted a different lawyer on recommendation before coming to Brian and that lawyer made me feel very uneasy about my situation. Brian made things very clear for me and I appreciated the time he took in explaining and sometimes re-explaining until I was contentedly "in the know" of what was going on. His legal advice and counseling towards my legal matter made me more comfortable that my situation would be effectively handled.
From my experience with lawyers, Plachta Murphy is different. The staff and attorneys were at my level and made me feel comfortable. That may seem like a small thing, but as a client who would rather not be dealing with a lawyer in the first place it really is a huge deal. In 2014 I had an income of a little over $40K. Also in that year, the Nonprofit I worked for as a consultant decided to dissolve and move it's assets to the local community foundation. The community foundation decided to use it's own staff to perform the mission of the now dissolved nonprofit and so I lost my job. In the months that followed, I was unable to find employment at that same level of compensation so lived on the income I had generated in 2014, leaving me with 4 figure tax obligations to the IRS, the State and 3 figure obligation to the City. With my current income at just above $14K, I was truly frightened to even engage any of these entities in a repayment discussion. I contacted South West Michigan Legal Service who referred me to Mr. Toft. Mr. Toft agreed to take my case. Over the weeks that Mr. Toft represented me, he thoroughly explained to me the circumstances of my situation with each entity so I could make fully informed decisions regarding the arrangement I would enter into. He talked with very unkind, uncooperative and even threatening representatives from the IRS. He successfully negotiated payment plans that I can meet based on my current financial situation. Most important to me is that he listened to me and respected and represented me to people I would have no skill to talk with in a reasonable way. He treated me with kindness and dignity at a time when I was not feeling very good about the circumstances in which I found myself. His knowledge of the incredible intricacy of tax law on the Federal, State and Local is extremely extensive. His resolution to my tax debts left me confident I can fulfill my obligations without fear of negative action from the any of the taxing authorities. I highly recommend Thomas H. Toft as a person and tax attorney.

From day one, Tom had my best interest in mind. He spent a lot of time educating me throughout the entire process of removing my name from numerous fraudulent loans. We talked frequently, with many phone calls and in-person meetings to discuss every step, record, and update from both the loan companies and credit bureaus. There was not, at any point, a time where I was not confident that I had the right person working with me to alleviate the headaches and stress of dealing with such a large amount of money and how it could affect my family. Over the nearly year-long process, Tom was able to help me remove all (numerous organizations and 10+ fraudulent loans), from my name and had them corrected by the loan companies, and removed and blocked by the credit bureaus. For the record, I did not know Chuck until a few years ago when my Liability Insurance carrier recommended that I call him on what appeared to be a very sticky and costly legal matter. Chuck wrote a letter to the other party in the matter and literally made it go away. His approach was brilliant and decisive, and convinced the other side they had no case and it was over before it started. I was somewhat stunned and certainly very pleased.
I am in the construction business and Chuck has since represented me on several occasions in matters ranging from workman's comp issues to legal contract disputes.
