Pete handled our case involving a local builder and architect who misrepresented himself, intentionally substituted structural materials, did not pay vendors, and was clearly over his head. Pete was always upfront about potential outcomes, cost, and was very clear as to what the "eye on the prize" meant. He was aggressive and pragmatic. He didn't hesitate to consult other attorneys in his firm to make sure all options were on the table. Pete is investigative, fair, and honest. He is an excellent attorney who knows his way around the Ottawa, Allegan, and Kent Co. court systems. We appreciated his expertise and the way he took a personal and professional interest in our case. We highly recommend him. If you are building a home, prior to signing any contract, he would be an excellent attorney to look it over. I wish we had done that at the start.

I had a family issue arise where difficult choices had to be made that could impact future generations. I found Mr. Betz to be wise and knowledgeable, and able to assist in looking at the options and long-term potential consequences of each one. I was very impressed with his concern for ethical choices over just expedient ones. I so appreciate the way he considered family relationships as well as legal options. I would highly recommend him.

James Alexander and the firm he is working at, Damon, Ver Merris, Boyko & Witte is the most reputable firm i am have come across. They have handled cases for us against companies with big wallets and attorneys that were very sneaky, crafty, trying every imaginable tactic to win. James pursued the ethical path and we prevailed despite opposing counsels tactics. He is very knowledgeable and when he doesn't know something, he says so and finds a knowledgeable expert. An incredibly honest attorney.

Within the first few minutes of meeting Ian, I realized two things. First, he's one of the good guys. He is compassionate, cares about people and doesn't carry that air some attorneys tend to have. But, more importantly for this situation, I knew I wanted him on my side when it came to my court case. His sage, percipient advice and keen, confident strategy routinely put the other side off balance and gave me an advantage in negotiating a complex civil case with multiple defendants. Put simply: Mr. Northon is one of the best attorneys I've met. I learned quickly it's easy to find an attorney to take your case, but it is quite difficult to find someone who will make your case his own. As a client, I want my attorney to be wholly invested in my case. Even at some of the best firms, that doesn't always happen. However, with Ian, he often reminded me about key points in the case I had forgotten or missed. Moreover, my long, arduous case was draining and I needed someone with Ian's personality. After our consultations, I always felt more energized and clear on the way ahead. He has a knack for explaining technical issues in an easy-to-understand way even a layman like I can comprehend. And, even when I asked simple questions, sometimes more than once, he answered without making me feel dense. Remember, he's not only one of the good guys, but the attorney you want in your corner. People skills are nice, but for your case and mine, we need to couple people skills with talented litigation. To that end, Ian Northon is the best choice. From the moment we began, he "owned" my case like it was his...as if he was personally involved. What I mean, beyond what I mentioned above, is Ian tends to buck the adage about attorneys stating "no one will be more invested in your case than you". There were times where I felt Ian was readier than I. He definitely took a personal interest in my case and delivered advice and strategy as if it was his own. His confidence and assertive style kept my case moving and the other side from getting away with some really dirty tricks they tried to pull. I would have been far worse off in my case had I not met Ian. More than that, he was honest. Mr. Northon never gave me false hope or promises that weren't delivered. Further, he is efficient in his case handling. I never felt overcharged. In fact, he was vocal about not wasting my money and pointed out attempts by the other side to increase their billable hours, but at no advantage to their clients. (This point was very important to me because I had just retired from the military and hadn't yet found employment.) In sum, he is an essential asset to his clients and daunting foe to the other side. This attorney-at-law is an example to his colleagues in his integrity, legal knowledge, litigation skills and client relations. He is empathetic and cares about your case, but also well-equipped to be your "secret weapon" in court. If you find yourself needing skilled, honest representation, I wholeheartedly recommend Ian Northon.

I had been trying to settle a debt with American Express on my own, but the next thing I knew they sent my account to collections and filed a lawsuit against me. Bronte took care of the court documentation for me, and was able to negotiate with the creditors attorney so I only had to pay 6K of my 12K debt. She updated me on all progress, and was able to get everything finalized in 3 weeks of hiring her. I highly recommend Bronte and her firm.

I 100% recommend Kendra as a attorney she was very precessional, on time and on top of my case. Kendras attention to the situation and care for my case was fenomenal. I am a Dad to the Bone and I was looking for a attorney who was serious about family, as this was very important to me. She helped me win my battles against my Ex who’s priorities were money, she kept starting frivolous motions to get off of child support and also motions stating me and my fiancé were hurting the children in hopes to gain full custody of the children. Father of a 2 year old and 4 year old now have 50/50 custody physical and legal I won the motions and she even managed to win attorney fees All in a matter of months. As a man it can seem difficult but not impossible especially with a great attorney like Kendra by your side, so again as a serious loving father I 100% recommend Kendra and her law firm.

From the moment I met Michele I was impressed with her professionalism, empathy, dedication, and wise counsel. I was going through a complicated divorce case that involved my breastfeeding infant. Not only was she able to see the importance of breastfeeding continuation, she also validated my feelings towards the case, and was able to advocate fairly for my child. Michele worked well with the other parties attorney and was able to come to a collaborative resolution that honored both parties needs and requests. Michele worked hard for a positive outcome, was there for me during a time of high stress, encouraged me to see the positives during a negative time, and was a great listener. Finding a lawyer can be difficult, however, Michele not only met my expectations she exceeded them. I will forever be grateful for her dedication and hard work. I would highly recommend Michele to my friends and family.

Hello I am Reverend Michael Malouf , I would like to share a experience that we had with Mr Jason Miller . The year of 2010 was the most horrific year I have ever lived in the 62 years of my life. As most of the USA the foreclosures and laws changed dramatically. We were caught up in a very difficult situation as the Mortgage holder of a rather large valuable piece of property. We had a rather nasty person who had quit making mortgage payments to us . This individual contested every way she could to try to steal this property from us and had it not been for Jason's wisdom and tenacious responses. We would have given up and lost our First note and deed of trust to a very dishonest person. Jason knew every little legal maneuver and his timing was impeccable. I have had other lawyers and they were good but Jason Miller is leaps and bounds ahead every one I thought was good. If anything ever goes sideways I can depend on this man to step up to the plate and he will hit a grand slam. Jason is very honest and keeps me informed as to how the law works and at every turn. He has the correct answer. Thank you Jason for all you do for the little guy Reverend Mike Malouf, Denver CO.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
