I contacted them at the end of February concerning a Replevin action, help with the paperwork. I am an abuse victim with a PFA in Kansas, he has everything I own in Missouri. The "Cheif Operating Officer" contacted me and set an appointment to discuss. I let her know I could do it on my 30min break, agreed on a time and date. No call, no answer. Called 45mins late. My work, understanding my situation, allowed me to take time for the call. Explained my case. A week later I was told that the Managing Partner would take my case. That I would need to put $5000 in an account. Top it up whenever they take charges. Evergreen Retainer. I thought this seemed excessive for help with paperwork. I asked what the anticipated costs would be. She answered "That is something you would need to discuss with an attorney should you wish to proceed with Harrah Law. I can provide you with our billable rates." Provided rates list. I then asked if it would be possible to speak with an attorney first, before making the commitment and depositing $5000. The response, "I will see if our managing partner will make an exception as this is not our usual practice." Not our usual practice... So, give us $5000 to take from, which you must top up, with absolutely zero knowledge of what we will be doing for you or any idea of how much it will cost. Scary! Every other attorney has given a free consultation, and indicated that giving an idea of anticipated costs, a range depending, is normal. She told me that she would speak with the Managing Partner and get back to me. That was 7.5 months ago. Money, zero client care. Would not recommend.

Like all the other 1 star review they will take your money...then say you don't have a case and will be short with you and try to talk you out from moving forward because they know they will not get any money out of the case. Brian and his team barely wanted to communicate or give us updates, but they want to charge us on discussing on reimbursing us back for the remaining work they didnt want to do..seriously?! What a joke!

The Harrah Law firm helped me through a difficult situation & supported my interests throughout the legal process. All the team members were professional and kind and seemed to be understanding of my situation. They handled items promptly and met deadlines throughout the whole process. I would definitely use their services again if I ever find myself in need of legal real estate representation.

Being busy is a good thing, and this is a common theme in this area since attorneys can represent two states and multiple practices. When I review, I always review based upon my overall experiences with professionals in the same industry. The very best was an attorney who was an angel and just wanted to help me resolve an issue, and never asked for money. Sadly, the brief consults I had with Dione, left me wanting more attention to if there was an opportunity to help me. We talked approximately 5 or 10 minutes. He wanted to speak to my witnesses, and I was open to it, but only after we agreed that he was the right attorney to represent me. When he called, he was rushed and got to the point. He didn’t have time to discuss my case. When I was reluctant to give witnesses, because we didn’t have a full conversation, and also no type of agreement; he wanted to refer me to others. Somehow the communication channels opened again, and he was open to consulting with me for a certain cost; then that amount increased when I explained the topics I wanted to cover. According to his website, he seems to have the experience and background that I wanted. However, we just never got to really talk, because he is busy. The process he took with me: 1. He emailed me an intake form, 2. I believe I did a follow-up call with him, and he was busy. He called me back to ask a few questions from the form. I think he will be good at interrogation, because I felt interrogated a little bit. 3. I think the dealbreaker happened when I wasn’t okay with giving a witness list. 4. I reached out to him with a comment about us not having a hero to help us when we need it, unlike the majority. 5. We opened up the communication channels again, so that shows that he does have some type of heart. My recommendation to you, if you are looking for help: 1. Decide what is important to you in an attorney. What you will or won’t accept. 2. Understand that attorneys in this area seem to be very busy. 3. Have a good game plan for what you will do if you don’t find someone. 4. If you are indigent and need legal help, and your case is at a certain limit (I believe $4,000 or so), possibly check with the free legal service in your area. 5. If you go at this alone, make sure you do a lot of research of what this entails. I can tell you that suing in small claims court is a lot different than suing in state or federal courts. There are so many strategies (also known as defenses) that your defendant or their attorney can use. So it’s less about the truth, facts, witnesses, etc. , it’s more about strategy (in my opinion). Since Dione was a litigator, I think he will be good with strategy. So if he has time to help you, it may be worth giving him a shot. It’s up to you. I personally want someone to be as passionate about my case, as I am, and of course, have the time to consult with me. Dione knows his limits, and he is very straightforward. He will tell you. This rating is based upon my experience, and the experience I have had with other attorneys. I can imagine this rating going much higher, if Dione had the time to consult. The plus, is that you get to talk to him, versus someone else who is handling the intake.

Would not recommend hiring. Delayed my court process by 6 months not at my request. Continued a court and did not bother to tell me so I went to court only to find out the date had been continued and never told why. Asked questions on multiple occasions and the attorney never bothered to respond. Never knew what was going even when I was asking. Most terrifying and helpless feeling in the world. Do not hire this attorney. Would do better to represent yourself.

After trying for a few years to get my disability, Sharon Myers got it for me within a few months. She and her staff were very informative, helpful and very easy to talk to. I know it's been a couple of years Mrs Myers, but you are greatly appreciated and thank you for all you do. I have sent her a few friends, and we'll send more if they arise. If you're looking for a disability attorney to represent you she is very good at what she does.

The primary complaint I have with Sharon Meyers specifically is the fact that she knew in advance of taking on my case--one month and a half before my review/hearing date--that I had prior legal representation. My transparency when I initially contacted Ms. Meyers and disclosed the name of my prior legal counsel as well as the fact that I was briefly represented by Legal Aid, was not reciprocated with transparency from the Myers firm about how the prior representation would impact the timing and overall fee petition decision of the Judge in my case. Because of prior representatives who did not waive their fees, the Judge did not approve the fee petition as part of the Notice of Award in September 2018. After contacting prior representatives, who previously provided me with a letter saying they were no longer representing me, I was advised they don't waive fees even when they opt to no longer represent a client. Aware there was specified time period for the representatives to respond, I contacted the Myers firm on January 2, 2019: They had NOT filed the fee petition, claiming they were not aware of my awarded SSD benefits. No one from the Meyers firm contacted me, but they stated they were awaiting a reply to their request for my award notice to file the fee petition. Only after I reached out to the Myers firm on January 2, 2019 again did they ask me to provide them with a copy of my award notice. As of March 2, 2019, I have received no updates from Judge’s office nor Myers about the fee petition. As professionals, it would have been appropriate for the Myers law office to provide me with realistic expectations for this process. Based my experience, I would not recommend.

I hired Paul to represent me and in the first meeting told him I needed two motions filed. He had three months and did not file them so my court date was continued another 3 months. The day before court he submitted the motions so the prosecution said they havent had time to review and I spent an additional 3 months in jail. He was also paid to represent me in immigration court but never told me he was suspended in immigration court. His incompetence will cost you.

I hired this Caitlin and was extremely disappointed with her services. Not only did she push the boundaries of ethical and legal conduct, but when confronted about it, she had the audacity to blame it on her clients. It was clear that she was more concerned with her own success and reputation than with providing honest and legitimate representation. I would strongly advise against hiring her for any legal matters. Her lack of integrity and accountability are concerning and make her unfit to represent clients.

We were over billed by $15000 and have asked multiple times for items billed which we haven't every received and where told that the biggest part was do to interoffice meetings. And we were charged for paper work, report and other items that we went and got and paid for and took to their office. And they ended up working for the ex instead of us. Run quickly before hiring them. They had other professional write good reviews to keep a high rating. But past client who do write reviews have been scammed by them.

I have used this office before and received really good information and friendly service from Rekha Sharma-Crawford. We decided to drop our other lawyer (from a different office) and use this office instead. When we got partnered with Lucy Betteridge we didn’t feel as comfortable with the way she spoke and acted due to her not keeping good eye contact and using lots of filler words like so and ummm for roughly 8 minutes with no new information that Rekha didn’t already cover with us, it seemed more like she was stringing us along for as long as possible to just make a quick buck. She sounded a little scared brained and also looked very unkempt. It may have been an off day for her but it was a bad first impression. On top of that we are required to submit I list of things we want to discuss during our consultation and paperwork for them to review prior. When she did not bring up any of the questions we submitted or any of the paperwork we submitted I requested if we could resume our meeting with another lawyer in the office. She then proceeded to get very defensive and say that we were insulting her and started to insult us next. She was informing me of her fee/retainer saying they don’t review documents and suggested that I couldn’t afford it. When I stated I could and would pay the amount she said but I would just feel more comfortable with someone else’s service and asked if she could arrange that for use she got even more rude saying she doesn’t work for us and we can do it ourselves but good luck with another lawyer in the office before hanging up on me. I then called the office phone and spoke to the receptionist asking for the rest of our consultation to be done by another lawyer. She placed me on hold and I was informed that Lucy said we were not a good fit for the office and black listed us. Lucy’s lack of professionalism was unbelievable. As a lawyer I believe she would be used to getting asked hard questions and have to respond in a professional manner. I guess when no one is around to keep her accountable for her actions she can do and say whatever she likes without repercussions from her employers.

I wouldn't recommend this firm. Initially when choosing this firm, I felt comfortable and that the attorney truly cared. However, with the primary method of communication being electronic, I've felt lost and very confused during my divorce process. I missed information, I've not been able to complete request in a timely manner and for this reason my there has been delays. Unfortunately I have an ex that won't participate and instead of the attorney helping me, I've been blamed and told what can't be done. It really seems like she doesn't care at all. Even with something I misunderstood, I was verbally checked and told how it was my fault. There seems to be no value for the client. Unfortunately, I paid my fees upfront but am definitely regretting it.

Kelisen was referred to me by a friend who had used her for an Order of Protection. She was extremely helpful and responsive. Her team was professional. I was very glad to have found her.

During my first consultation with Kelison, I thought she was nice and informative. However, after I hired her to take on my case, she was not easy to get in contact with and I felt as though she was not taking my case serious. After several texts from my ex stating he knew that was getting ready to have a baby and that she was on maternity leave. I felt as though Kelison was way too personal with the opposing counsel. And I did not appreciate that at all. Especially, with all the stress I was already going through with having a newborn baby and having to go through a court case. After seeking new counsel, I sent Kelison an email stating that I would no longer be seeking advice from her and that I had found a new lawyer. I have sent a few emails after parting ways with her and her firm and I have still not received any of my retainer from the Binder Firm. If I could give 0 stars, I would! How do you not refund someone part of their $1500? I understand her services had an hourly fee, however, I only met with her face to face twice and spoke on the phone with her once or twice. The services used did not equal $1500. And I should have received something as a refund! It is now August of 2020 and I parted ways with Kelison in December of 2019. Why has it taken so long for me to receive a refund?? There are better lawyers in the KC area than this firm!!

We retained Henry for a child custody and parenting plan revision. He came to court unprepared, didn't advise us of certain forms that had to be completed, failed to represent the key areas of the case, and failed through appeals. Nice person, but not a good lawyer.

I contacted this firm months and had an appointment immediately, but it was basically for nothing. He was rude, dismissive, and not helpful at all. Unprofessional at its finest. It was almost like he was the prosecutor in my trial before my trial!!! Poor customer service from his staff too. If you have a strong case I would recommend you go to someone else.

I contacted Mr. Service in response to a letter I received from his office offering services when my Ex husband filed a modification. When I called, I was immediately offered a consultation appointment despite his full schedule, they made time to see me. Mr Service took the time to get details about my case specifics and explain the process, and what is important to legally focus on in family/civil cases. He was also upfront about possible issues but took time to listen and explain so it pertained to my circumstances; not a general speech I got when trying to make appointments/consult with other lawyers. Mr. Service is very knowledgeable in these areas and I believe he will be good representation for what is important to me and my family in court. Thank you

This lawyer was paid in full by my son and never once went to see him, he did show up for court only to appear but did not speak on my son's behalf! He choked up once the judge spoke as well as when the prosecutor spoke! I have called and called Byron and when I did speak with him he only promised what he did not stand up to. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone!

Mr Woehlece is SHARP, he undstands your situation and he actually CARES about you. I was in the middle of a 'court system crisis' (breakdown) - Byron came HIGHLY recommended from a friend. Bryon understands the Kansas City legal system and knows many piers working within the legal system. He is extremely knowledgeable, and will work to resolve your problem with YOUR outcome in mind. I have used other attorney's in KC, and found they failed. If you need a great guy, a strong attorney, and the best attorney, who has your back.... Byron should be your first call.

When I hired Mr. Adams to represent me it was supposed to be a rather simple case being the other parent was in jail. The other parent ended up getting out and showing up to court. Mr. Adams turned to me and said "We're toast" this is a horrible thing to ever hear from your attorney! The Judge set it over so he could have time to review the case and documents from both parties. Hearing nothing from Mr. Adams and my court hearing getting close I contacted him to see what defense or information he had prepared for court. Stating " I don't even know what this hearing is for" was the response I got. At court the Judge had read all of the false accusations and statements turned in by the other parents attorney and ripped my life apart. Why did I think anything good was going to happen when Mr. Adams never even turned in any kind of defense on my behalf nor did he object to anything that was provably incorrect. To make matters worse evidence left on Mr. Adams voicemail at his work was never even brought up when it would have probably won my case! As an attorney their job is to defend you and fight for your right but family law is more then that. Family Law attorneys are the difference between you seeing your child grow up and because of Mr. Adams I am missing parts of my child's life I can never get back! Making matters worse my child is in an abusive situation that my lawyer could have shown to the Judge, but he didn't and my child to this day is still being abused. As a parent it is your job to protect your child and do whats best for them regardless of what it takes. How could I have known that a wrong choice in an attorney is something that would be such a life shattering experience! The fact that I cry every day and that my child is being abused doesn't seem to matter one bit to Mr. Adams because I've not heard from him. After court he kept saying "I'm sick to my stomach about it" but just as he did nothing in that court room he has done nothing about it since. I have lost the only thing that matters to me in life and cant begin to explain the pain and heartache I live with. All I want to do is maybe prevent anyone else from having to experience it by selecting Mike Adams as their attorney.

I started working with Sam 2 years ago before he started working at Dipasquale Moore. My case lasted just under 2 years. My settlement was just last week. Sam admitted that he was not communicating well with me. This lasted for nearly a year and half before another attorney from his firm had to take over my case. Would not recommend.

We hired Christina Miller to represent our Gestational Carrier in the process of drafting our Gestational Surrogacy Agreement. During drafting, Christina communicated poorly, failed to provide necessary context to crucial redlines (we learned later the carrier had mentioned detail that was simplynot shared and that Christina had added redlines not requested by the carrier), and ultimately convinced the carrier to break the match by directly misrepresenting the language around termination to her, claiming that we were asking for the right to terminate a healthy pregnancy (in fact the draft stated directly that termination would only be contemplated if a doctor advised the quality of life of any born child would be exceedingly low or if the pregnancy were to become entirely unviable and dangerous to the carrier). The criteria for termination were previously discussed between ourselves, the carrier, and agency. We all agreed unequivocally that it would be our decision as intended parents (so long as the carrier's health was not at risk of course) and only something we'd consider if medically advised to do so and on the basis of quality of life. In fact, this was also documented on a form kept by the agency, where our carrier specified that she would leave termination decisions up to intended parents. In other words, our carrier had already agreed to the terms we drafted and only due to Christina's misrepresentation of the draft language subsequently changed her mind. Additionally Christina wanted to change the compensation agreement that the carrier had already negotiated with the agency. This is a separate agreement, specified by the carrier and negotiated with the agency. This same compensation agreement is agreed to by us as intended parents with the agency. All parties had already signed this compensation agreement prior to drafting the GSA. In other words, everyone has already agreed to these details. Furthermore, Christina made several puzzling redline additions that we learned from the carrier were not requested by her: such as allowing late-term travel to states where surrogacy is illegal or otherwise considerably more complex (this could put parentage in jeopardy should the carrier deliver in such a state). Another example: Christina made the claim that the standard compensation schedule our agency has used for the last decade could be viewed as "baby buying". This same schedule has been reviewed by dozens of ART attorneys who found no legal issue with it. There is no simply legal basis for this claim whatsoever and this item alone concerns me regarding Christina's capability and qualifications for ART law. Because the legal process is usually the last step before an embryo transfer, this meant we had already invested over $15,000 in the match, paying for: psychological evaluation, insurance review, prescription medication, medical exams, medical screening for the carrier and her partner (imaging, bloodwork, etc), airfare, taxi, hotel accommodation, and so on. While it's important that both the carrier and intended parents have proper legal representation, it is never appropriate for an attorney to misrepresent a legal agreement to their client. To say that the drafted language was anything but a clear set of reasonable constraints that actively sought to avoid termination is not just dishonest it's unethical. We were completely baffled as to why Christina would represent our draft language this way and behave in a manner that seemed to intentionally add friction to the drafting process until we were later informed by a separate party that Christina and the carrier had immediately begun working with a new set of parents once the match had broken and that Christina was able to secure a special deal that netted her three times the usual fee to represent both. Hopefully our experience can be helpful to folks who are considering Christina's services.

Christina Miller is a wonderful attorney and person. She really makes you feel comfortable in what can be a very uncomfortable/emotional situation. She really knows her stuff and is great at advocating for her client. I used her toward the end of my journey as a surrogate and wish I would have used her from the start. I will for sure be calling her if I ever need a reproductive family law attorney again. I cannot recommend her enough.

My husband and I have been calling and emailing for a status to see when his bankruptcy will end. I emailed months ago and got no reply. All of their office phones and cell phones keep going to voicemail. We feel scammed. Lydia was the original attorney he hired, and then Vanessa took over. How can they operate like this with no repercussions?

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
