Attorney, Kevin Luibrand and Paralegal, Jennifer Setford are both 5 stars! Kevin listened and partnered with me through my legal case. He took the time to really understand the facts and was in the driver’s seat with his vast knowledge, but included me throughout the process. Kevin and Jennifer provided attention to the details and were very timely in their communication with me to get my case across the finish line and win! Thank you, Kevin and Jennifer!

I had this law firm do a closing on a 3 unit rental property I owned in Troy. Jim Blendell was the lawyer. The closing date was 7/6/17. The loan didn't actually get paid off until 7/20/17! Whoever was in charge of writing out the pay off check, wrote in "aurora bank" instead of the correct "nationstar bank". Our lawyer who we paid almost $500 for a few hours "work", didn't bother looking over the check and it was sent in error to our bank. The bank sent it back and then 2 full weeks later (after much complaining by me) the title company finally issued another check to the correct bank. In those 2 weeks, we incurred a late fee and a credit ding AND Nationstar mortgage company disbursed $699.99 in property takes on 7/12/17)! So, we paid the new owners property tax. I emailed and called Jim Blendell but got no response. I emailed a second time and he basically said that the city of Troy would send the $699.99 back to the mortgage company and then Nationstar would send it to us. I knew that was HOGWASH. I called the treasurer and the comptroller of Troy and was told that my lawyer needed to get involved to get the $699.99 back. They would not just I called Jim Blendell again and let him know this and he gave me a nasty attitude and would not help me. He got his money at the closing 2 weeks ago so he evidently felt no need to right the wrongs his mistakes had created. As of this date, 7/31/17 I have not heard from Lecce arcodia law firm of the lawyer jim blendell. No one ever apologized for their complete screw up of this closing AND I had to pay a late fee because of their ineptness. Please please please, if you have a real estate closing DO NOT USE lecce arcodia. Find another law firm. There are many in the capitol region.

I hired her for a RE transaction. First contact seemed great and my contract requests were treated with full support however nothing was ever addressed until just before the deadline and when their breach of contract was imminent I was told by her paralegal there was no legal remedy and I should accept it or back out. I had to engage someone else entirely to do the heavy lifting. Ms. McAvoy never returned a single call even when my panicked messages were left for her, desperate for legal advice. She was completely disconnected from all of it .. only there to contract me, then to close. Seemed to do nothing else at all for me in the interim.

I hired Dorothy from a recommendation from my former divorce attorney Joanne White, who is excellent in her own legal specialty. She was excellent throughout the period of the transaction but when the buyers used an out of town bank to purchase my home, the closing went sideways because the money was not wired. But Dorothy protected us and did an excellent job to get information on where the funds where and followed through completely through the next day when we did receive our funds. Ken her paralegal assistant was very detailed oriented and I can see why he is invaluable asset to the Dorothy Tischler legal team.

Firstly, thank you, Dorothy, for your incredible help throughout the purchase of our first home. My husband and I heard wonderful feedback from other clients who had previously enlisted Dorothy's services and we were not disappointed. Not only was Dorothy extremely detail-oriented when initially going over the contract with us, she also went out of her way to truly protect us, explain anything we didn't understand, and saved us a LOT of money. When a large storm swept through the region the day before we were scheduled to close (and power was out at our new house), Dorothy arranged to have a generator power the needed office equipment at her office so we could still close on time (meanwhile, just down the street from Dorothy's office, a large tree had fallen and blocked off traffic). To still be treated as a priority - even in such extenuating circumstances - just added to our overall positive experience. Both Dorothy, and her amazing paralegal, Ken, were very responsive and always got back to us with answers to any of our many questions incredibly quickly. Everyone told us buying a house would be stressful, but we couldn't have had a smoother experience. I would absolutely recommend Dorothy and her team. Thank you!!

Dorothy and her team are fantastic. She represented us in both the sale and purchase of our homes this spring/summer. Dorothy was so patient, easily accessible and very knowledgeable. For example, I wasn’t sure of a certain document that I needed, and Dorothy stayed on the phone with me until I found the correct one (after many failed attempts at locating what I needed). Her team kept us informed every step of the way so we always knew where our file was. Definitely recommend!! Thank you Dorothy!

I was falsely accused in a medical case. Ms. Latimer came highly recommended by a friend. After accepting thousands of dollars in fees and retainers, she dropped my case because unbeknownst to me she was negotiating a deal to join a firm involved in another aspect of the case. What a Benedict Arnold! How untrue to her stated values.

I was the seller, and I didn't come to closing (5 hours away). They wanted to charge 200 to wire funds which is absolutely theft of services since the banks charge $20, and then decided they don't and won't do wire transfers anymore. They waited 4 days to put the funds in the overnight envelope provided by my attorney, and they sent my attorney proceeds to me . Now I have the check but it's not certified funds so I need to wait for funds to clear as r.... meanwhile their clients (buyers) have the key to the house the day of closing. The gentlemen in the firm who answered the phone was amazing, but his hands were tied by the people running the show. If I ever have to do business with this firm I will tell buyers they get the key to the house WHEN I GET PAID. Poor business practices.

Barbara Brenner helped my husband with a complicated case. He has a green card thanks to her. She is very experienced and knowledgeable (can cite immigration law changes from the '90s off the top of her head). Most important, she is clearly known, trusted, and respected by employes of USCIS. An interviewer told us "You have a good lawyer." Good lawyers cost money. Her rates are standard in the field. Anyone who is expecting representation to be cheap is being unrealistic.

Absolutely the worse experience ever. She lied about the total fees and just kept sending more bills each time she sent me an email. Worse part is, she never even filed our case after 7 months of her back and forth and excuses. Anywhere from being short staffed to she was away from the office. The list went on. In the end I’m out my money and now have to start all over to find another attorney who actually knows what they are doing. I will file a complaint to every know agency in NYS! Hopefully she can not do this to anyone else!

Barbara Brenner is the worst immigration lawyer. She is only concerned about money. If you want to do anything with immigration, consult other lawyers. Don't choose her. If you choose her you will loose a lot of money and get stressed out. She will take more money, if you are from other country and new to this place. She will ask a lot of money at the last moment of immigration interview, its just like a trap! please don't go for it. Don't get SCAMMED by Barbara. PLEASE DON'T END UP IN HUGE DEBT.

Unfortunately I had a similar experience. I met with Ms. Verner in Dec. 16 to draw up a will for me. I gave her a downpayment of $500, but never heard back. I called her recently, but learned that she had left the law firm awhile ago. In our last conversation she assured me that the will was nearly completed. It is a half year later and I've never received it.

We went to Kimberly to set up our wills and trusts. She was absolutely wonderful, or so we thought. She explained everything so well and we were so comfortable with her. There was only one thing left for her to do for us and that was to make an amendment to our will. It was supposed to be done mid August. Late Sept. we realized we never heard from her. I emailed her twice leaving her a week in between each email. Then I called her twice, leaving a week between each call, she never responded. I stopped in her office to see if I could catch her in, unfortunately she was out that day. I left my name and phone numbers (it is now early November) still no response. Of course, we paid her in full, she was done with us. We still can't believe she would do that, we thought she was so great.

The attorney George slingerland 12 Cornell rd Latham was suppose to write up a contract to cancel it so I could get my deposit back, he will not return my calls, emails, so now my money sits in the sellers escrow account. Now I have to hire a lawyer to get that back . I am going to bring charges against George for misconduct and make him pay for everything. so now I would now recommend him.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
