Some 20 years ago, I reached out to F. Douglas Ross, Esq. about my legal concern regarding the conduct of my brother, then a federal judge in PA, whose heavy-handed interference in a family estate matter was questionable. Attorney Ross said that my now-late brother, "as a federal judge," was not someone about whom he could advise me on how to proceed. A different attorney, located in Lake Ridge, VA, handily undertook my case and we reached an amicable solution that has held our family together to this day. I have not forgotten the dispatch with which Attorney Ross dismissed me as soon as he perceived potential political influence from a federal judge in another state. It was clear to me then, and remains with me now, that his first professional priority is to himself and not to his client. After one consultation, provision of estate documents, and dismissal, Attorney Ross sent me a several thousand dollar bill, which I promptly paid. Life moves on. Time heals. But, sadly, one remembers when one has been forsaken.

We were astonished when I got the $400.00 bill for an initial consult. When we made the initial contact, nothing was said about fees. Since many firms give initial consults for free or as a lower cost I was surprised at the bill. The Lawyer was attentive and gave good advice, but charging $400 to tell me I did not have a case is unconscionable.

All they do is take your money and leave you without representation! I had been charged $410 for a "STRATEGY SESSION" even though they advertise FREE Consultations!! I had to reach out to them one week AFTER I signed all their agreements and gave them the retainer. Right before my meeting with the attorney for a meeting to respond to the courts request, the company FIRED the attorney. They EMAILED me one hour before I was to call into the conference. not even a phone call. WHAT A JOKE! And to make things worse, I had to fight with them to get my retainer back. After many calls and emails, they have yet contacted me for an apology or to return my money "STRATEGY SESSION" that went nowhere. They don't just FIRE someone in the spot. They knew what they were doing way before that day. I'm the one that paid for a service that went nowhere and then had to pay again for a new attorney at a much BETTER firm (should have gone to ROOP XANTTOPOULOS BABOUNAKIS and KLAM PLLC first) Would NOT recommend Melone Hatley at all!!!

I retained Berry & Berry to help me navigate some potential conflicts of interest with my outside volunteer activities and my federal employment. They gave me valuable guidance on the steps I needed to take to avoid any conflicts so that I could continue my volunteer work. They are more expensive than other attorneys I have used, but they also credited my unused time so that I can use them again in the future if necessary. I highly recommend them for federal employment law.

Could not put a star lower than one, this company ruined my life. I did the research and handed them a simple case of gender discrimination with documented federal felonies, and they still could not win my case. The main federal felony was a voilation of 18 USC 1001, falsifcation of federal documentation. The specific lie was being terminated using 5 CFR 213.3202, what it should have been was 5 CFR 315.804/805 what confuses me is how did federal employment attorneys did not know this? What really confuses me is the fact that Virginia attorneys have to take an oath of office Virginia law Title 54.1 section 54.1-3909, that states:...that I will suppprt the Constititution of the United States and the Constititution of the Commonwealth of Virginia....... How is falsificaton of official goverment documentation supporting the Constititution of the US? Since allowing federal felonies to occur is not supporting the US Constititution why did Berry and Berry violate their oath of office with my case?

Steve handled my high-pressure, high-profile divorce from start to finish from 2013 to 2014, as well as lingering issues in 2015, with complete professionalism, control, and finesse. Steve always kept me informed, never let me feel intimidated, let me read everything, incorporated my edits, and handled numerous explosive legal situations that were repeatedly lobbed at me. Let me emphasize – this was not an easy divorce, nor was it at an ideal time in my life, as I had only recently returned to the workforce after staying at home with my children for many years. But Steve has seen it all, and has excellent instincts. He’s not intimidated by anyone on the other side, but does not have to resort to bombast in order to accomplish what you need. His demeanor is quiet, yet very thoughtful, and I found that he is extremely well-regarded by all judges we went before as well as among his fellow attorneys and mediators, which is critically important. Nothing about getting a divorce is easy – especially when there are kids involved and an unpredictable spouse who is taking a “scorched earth” approach toward your divorce. But when your life is falling apart, you HAVE to have someone on your side who can handle the legal chaos that can result. Steve did that for me and successfully negotiated what I needed for the future. I interviewed two other attorneys before hiring Steve – both in Fairfax City near the courthouse who had handled divorces for friends of mind. Both were very nice, but neither could have withstood the withering tactics of my ex and his attorney. Steve is NOT afraid to go to court for you – and so often, you have to go to court – and he is NOT afraid to deal with opposing counsel. Remember – with any attorney, you get what you pay for. I’ve seen this over and over with my divorced friends who hired other attorneys and who did NOT get the settlements or agreements that they needed. This is probably the worst time in your life; don’t make it harder on yourself by hiring someone who can’t handle your situation. I highly recommend Garver Law Offices, and have already recommended Steve to several people I know who unexpectedly found themselves in the same situation. Trust me, Steve knows what he is doing.

A number of years ago, I hired Mr. Garver to represent me in my divorce, which included the legal service of filing a document on my behalf, about two pages in length, with the Fairfax County Circuit Court. A few days afterwards, I phoned him and asked if he could please send me, for my own reference, a copy of this short document he had filed with the court for me. It was a document that could have been photocopied and faxed to me within a few minutes. Mr. Garver reacted with mocking sarcastic irritation to my request, stating "Is it critical?" as if he were speaking to someone utterly beneath him. He then informed me that he was too busy that day to fax me a copy of this document. At that point, he did not tell me when I might expect to receive it. Mr. Garver acknowledged that I had a right to receive a copy of this document from my case file. However, he would not give me a time frame for when I might expect him to fax it to me. I then asked him if he could confirm that he would be able to fax it to me the following day. But he would not confirm that either. Since Mr. Garver was apparently too busy to fax a copy of this document to me that day, and also would not provide some reasonable assurance that he would fax it to me the following day, I asked him by what day I could expect to receive it. Even then he still would not provide me with a firm date by which I could expect him to fax me a copy of this document. That is how our phone conversation ended with regard to a simple request to receive a copy of this short document from my file. I did not appreciate his evasiveness when I asked him for a simple estimate of how long it would take him to get around to faxing me a two-page document. I faxed Mr. Garver a letter soon afterwards, notifying him that I no longer wanted him as my attorney because of this behavior and requesting a refund of any unused portion of my retainer. It took him about one month to provide this refund, after I followed up with him about it. Shortly after I notified him that I no longer wanted him as my attorney, he did then manage to fax me a copy of that document.

I would not recommend Steven Garver, very disappointed. I hired him and then decided to go with another lawyer who is more specialized in criminal defense. It happened a week after I paid him, so he didn’t do anything yet. When I asked for my money back, Mr.Garver said he’ll refund some, not all of it. Couple weeks later he sent me a check for half of what I paid. Very unprofessional. Stay away

Mr. Hsia was a horrible lawyer. I still remember how he and his assistant delayed and handled sloppy on my case many years ago. It nearly messed up my case. It was nightmare for me. And I remember when I complained about it to him his attitude was like a rogue. If I could give a ZERO star I would have given. Unfortunately the system only allows me to give one star to him, which I don't think he ever deserved.

He helped me applying greencard through EB2, then downgraded to EB3. Before of his immediate action and his office's efficiency on preparing all the documents, he saved me almost 2 years comparing to normal greencard waiting time (backlog and priority date waiting).

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
