Dayla Pepi took my case via St. Mary's Legal Aid (pro-bono) and it ruined my life forever. I lived homeless in Haven for Hope because she wanted my kids to remain with their wealthy father. She broke the law and told me a piece of paper allowed my children to legally reside with their dad. The paper wasn't a valid legal document. (According to experienced attorneys and the judge) That was back in 2012, then she convinced me that a judge would never believe me if I went to court to ask them to review the documents. When my children began to become brainwashed against me, due to the long periods of separation. I only saw them 6 times in 2012. I kept begging her to take my case to the judge, but she refused. Even when my kids showed up in smelly and dirty clothing, Dayla still felt that living with their father was in their best interest. I could be with my children right now, but Dayla told me I couldn't "live off their child support" in so many words. I have the documents to prove every word I typed and more. She's no "Saint" even is she does work for St. Mary's.

Ms. Maloney never bothered to return my phone calls after I discussed my case in detail with her assistant Eileen. After several phone calls to find out why Ms. Maloney would not return my calls, some assistant got on the phone and told me she was not interested in handling my case. She refused to speak with me to at least explain why she would not handle the case, and her assistant Eileen also refused to speak with me again to explain why Ms. Maloney would not handle the case. At this point, I would not hire Ms. Maloney to handle a traffic ticket, much less a medical malpractice case with good merits. I would not recommend her to anyone who needs any type of legal help.

Mr Segovia handled my case a few years ago and after paying retainer and upfront fees, he was very hard to get a hold of. He kept asking for more money and paralegal did all the work. I was the plaintiff in the case and the respondents attorney was the one that did the final decree which I did not agree with.

I hired him thru Thomas Henry, I rarely got any updates on my case and when I did it was from his secretary only. His medical secretary knew more about my case then both of them combined. The few times I did speak with him while he was cordial he had a very arrogant tone and did not seem to treat his staff properly. I scheduled a meeting with him in which he was late to, and while speaking about settlement offers I had specific questions that to this day remain unanswered. I ended up terminating his services. You have been warned.

Within my title, those 5 words would be how I would describe my "lawyer". He was my court appointed attorney, however, if that is how he works with his clients when its free, I can only imagine what he would do if you pay him money. I am not going to disregard his experience nor education, but when I was his client, it never felt like he was on top of things. In April he stated he would file for a speedy trial for my case, but it wasn't filed until August, essentially a day or two before my next court date, which had gotten pushed back an additional 30 days after that. After telling him my entire situation, it felt he had no care in the world to actually help me. For example, I wanted him to apply for a dismissal and he kept informing me with legal jargon of why he couldn't do that. Little did he know, I have a relative who works for SAPD, and explained the situation exactly the same, and stated there's no reason why the case should be dragging on any further. I even talked to a lawyer I was willing to pay my last dime on, who sated the same thing. My lawyer failed to address to the court my medical history, the lack of evidence the courts and police have, as well as address the fact that if my BAC was 0.0%, and if the courts are wanting to test for drugs, how come its taking them almost two years to test for substances? I am led to believe that he was being careless the whole time, due to how much time had gone by as he was my attorney. Another issue that could've helped my case, would have been him looking at all 15 hours of the police body cam, so that he can note that there was no sobriety test given nor was the police asking me questions on my medical history as well. It makes no sense that Mr. Garcia stated that he was still never able to get the footage, when my new attorney had watched 10 out of 15 hours already and was just appointed last month. *Did I mention that when I had asked for a dismissal, that he stated he didn't want to bother the judge? To me when I hear those words that doesn't sound like a lawyer, or at least an aggressive one. Just because you are a court appointed attorney doesn't mean you should shrub off your clients nor not execute as if the client was paying you, because if he had been paid, then my request more than likely would have been filed. I have had past court appointed attorneys who have been heavily on my case, communicating me through the whole process, and making sure I end up scot free, because the charges were nonsense. When I started to communicate to him more, he got more squirmy, dismissive, and unresponsive at times. As in he was rushing me off the phone when I had several questions. So much so that when I had asked for more help, he decided to withdraw from my case as my court appointed attorney. If you chose this career path as a free lawyer, you have to understand customer service, and based on our interaction he has none. There was a point in our phone conversations, that when I was asking him all these legal questions he stated "Did you get a law degree"? I am not sure if that is what he says to all his clients, but no I got a Health science degree from the #1 university in the state of Texas, and because I felt like this entire case is a form of discrimination (non racial), I am disappointed in the fact that this is ongoing, and he did nothing to resolve it. Otherwise I would be leaving a very different review.

Due to major medical errors by my orthopedic surgeon, I am now living with the most painful chronic disease known to mankind. Our land/property attorney referred me to Samuel W. Royston to handle a medical malpractice case for me. We received NO communication from him for almost a year, other than through our property attorney. He never followed through with anything and deserves no less then a ZERO star rating. Because of his unprofessional attitude and lack communication, our case lapsed past the time when it was no longer a viable case. When he finally met with us, it was simply to apologize for not doing his job and to inform us that our time to file a suit had passed. Of course we were cognizant that there was a time limit, therefore our experience with Mr. Royston was an exercise in futility from beginning to end. Both my husband and myself would strongly suggest that you look elsewhere for an attorney.

Roy G. Franco charged my sister 1000.00 to represent me. He sent lawyer George B. Dombart to represent me AFTER I HAD POSTED MY OWN BOND AND ARRANGED MY OWN DEFENSE WHEN I WAS RELEASED. I had never met with either attorney before I had my first court appearance and was shocked when George B. Dombart appeared instead of the public defender that I had previously requested and qualified for. I fired attorney Dombart on the spot and arranged to hire a new attorney who successfully brought in witnesses who testified to my innocence and the charges against me were dismissed and the case was closed. The reason I adamantly declined anyone associated with Mr. Franco is that he has a history of alcohol abuse, and even admitted to the use of illegal drugs. He had harassed me earlier about my religious/faith practices during unsolicited late night phone calls in which his speech was slurred and his temperament was bizarre. He also spread misinformation about me to our family members. Mr. Franco now refuses to take my phone calls, as well as my sister’s. He also refuses to return voice messages left on his answering machine. He has not responded to letters of demand for reimbursement of the 1000.00 that were sent via certified mail. Mr. Dombart, his associate, has behaved the same and my sister and I have filed formal grievance with the State Bar of Texas.

I was reffered to this lawyer back in 2003 when I was in an accident. I was 18 at the time and didn't know any better. I finally settled the case in Feb '08 and to this date Oct '08 my medical bills have yet to be paid off. And in the 5 years I have been dealing with her most of the calls have been initiated by me. Very few if any courtesy update calls.

I`d never seen an attorney getting to the court house all smelling alcohol. More importantly, is his claim of help. Nothing falls free from the Sky. Finally, he does more damage to poor uneducated immigrants cases than assist their sorry situation, using "Pro-Bono" to lure these unsuspecting already traumatized immigrants is unethical, selfish and inhuman which circumvents the basic principle of fundamental human rights.

Mr. Hernandez was a court appointed attorney for my son in a criminal case. He took many months to even visit my son in jail. He did not file any motions on his behalf for many months. His bedside manner was horrible. He does not return your calls until the day before court. My son spent about a year in jail before the case was settled. My son is now paying the price, in prison.

This lawyer made my divorce a living hell. Lots of misinformation and misrepresentation. Made me question whether she was working for me or the other party. Cost me a furtune and I was very unpleased with the results. Seemed like the other party's lawyer worked for me better than her. Please choose another attorney and save yourself some therapy later.

This attorney got away with $10,000 of mine which I am currently trying to recoup in a lawsuit. This attorney had no idea what she was doing and was a bad case of ineffective assistance of counsel. She attempted to withdraw from my case in court because she was afraid and had no idea what she was doing and made me look like an idiot. I would not hire this attorney, she promises things she can’t deliver.

I hired John Serna to help me get visitation with my grandchildren after my son died. Mr. Serna was woefully unprepared for court and it showed as he was often reprimanded by the judge for being unprepared and forgetting courtroom protocol. He did not prepare me for what would happen in court or what kind of questions he would be asking and as a result he upset the judge by leading the witness; this could have been avoided with even a few minutes of preparation. Without my consent or input, Mr. Serna also turned down a deal to spend a few hours with my grandkids as he was convinced he could get more time without investing time on the case. As a result of his unsubstantiated cockiness and lack of research on the law, I received no time with my grandchildren and have not seen them in 4 years. When I asked for my money back due to his lack of preparation, he informed me that he had already given the money to his daughter. I would not recommend John Serna even if you have a simple parking ticket as he'd probably forget to take care of it and you will end up in jail. I would give him zero stars if I could. Please retire, Mr. Serna.

Is willing to turn and run at the slightest hint of a true court battle. Attorneys are suppose to fight for you even if they are hired to defend you by the State as a public defender. The "I dont get paid to investigate anything" attitude only shows, just plead guilty so I can get paid and go to the next.

This attorney is extremely unprofessional, deceptive and dishonest. It will be a matter of time before he gets disbarred so that he can never practice law again. Takes advantage of clients and is a hot head. Probably why he was arrested in 2003 for a road rage incident which resulted of him being sent to jail.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
