I was very pleased to find a lawyer capable of writing a comprehensive trust. The document is very thorough. However, when I needed to make a minor change of exchanging the role of two names, the charge was half the cost of the trust itself. $500 for a minor secretarial change is outrageous. When we hired him we were made to understand that minor changes could be done without charge or at a minimal fee.

I do not recommend doing business with this firm. I had a very negative and dissatisfied experience as I hired Matt to prepare a Will for my husband who was dying and I was scared by gifted talk into purchasing a high $$ estate plan which was NOT needed. Find a law firm that will support your needs and listen to what you want to do. The estate plan was not prepared timely, incomplete and totally worthless as the firm never completed the documents or returned my many telephone calls. I lost total trust to work with this firm. I wasted monies for an estate plan that I never needed and now as a widow, will find another lawyer to support my legal needs. Do some research and discuss your family needs before you are rushed to hire a lawyer.

Matt constructed wills and a trust for our family. He took his time and made sure that the trust provided for our specific family needs. We did not feel “rushed” and he was open to making changes, as needed. He is competent and thorough. He and his staff are efficient and friendly. I would definitely recommend him to others.

Karl is an excellent attorney, when he's working on your case. However, he or his staff do not communicate with you...at all. My case was/is an uncontested child custody and step-parent adoption that has been going on for 2 years come January. I had to write a certified letter to his office to get any response. I am still waiting...at this rate, my son will be 18 and moved out of the house by the time this is over with. He was 12, he's now 14 and will be 15 in March.

Richard D Woods was hired by my parents for a drug related indiscretion. He was responsive only in the first few weeks, at the time responding within a few days. THIS MAY BE IMPORTANT TO YOU: He did not notify me of a warrant for my arrest ahead of time, and I was escorted out of class. As the intensity of my case decreased, his response time increase proportionally, until he had handed my case over to a more conveniently located lawyer altogether. Richard woods, acting as a middleman for the local lawyer, accepted the original money, requested additional funds, and yet did not pay the upfront fee from the hired lawyer out of his funds. THIS MAY BE IMPORTANT TO YOU: The local lawyer was running for office Against the judge which my case was taking place in. Rick Woods either didn't account for the bias, or was aware of it and did not feel that my case warrented proper time and effort. The local lawyer did not push for any sort of renumeration or lessened intensity, and instead, influenced by personal ambition, made only novel attempts at allowing the record to be expunged in the future. A year after this excapade, I recieve an itemized bill from the local lawyer, having already sent it to Rick Woods, without any contact attempt from him.

Gennaro was a pleasant lawyer but slow to notify me of developments in my divorce case. My ex dragged the divorce out over 2 years. He allowed the opposing counsel to flagrantly ignore agreed upon elements of written and signed agreements, even court ordered items. He wouldn’t insist on my rights or inform them that he would take action if they didn’t come into compliance. His rates were fair and flexible. I never felt like he was padding his billing hours because we agreed on an overall maximum potential cost. He delivered UNDER the price agreed upon. Ultimately, I would rather have paid more for aggressive representation.

Just received denial letter from SSA for disability. Firm had an agent call me with a questionnaire and determined, without seeing the contents of the letter, that I had a "technical" denial, and stated I could not be helped. Called the firm and possibly talked to a paralegal. Again refused to listen to the circumstances stated on the letter, which contained numerous inaccuracies. Also refused to consider I'm a 100% disabled veteran, concurrently rated "individually unemployable." Ultimately was told I should read the requirements on the SSA website. Well, I did. This law firm is only looking for the easy clients and has a poor sense of justice and fairness. Will not recommend this firm to my friends. "Also in 2009, both houses of Congress introduced legislation known as the BRAVE Act1 that would certify veterans judged by the VA to have total disability (that is, having a combined rating of 100% or a rating of individual unemployability [IU]) as meeting the medical requirements of the disability programs administered by SSA. Essentially, a veteran with a rating of total disability would not have to undergo the medical portions of SSA's disability determination to be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits." https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/ssb/v74n3/v74n3p1.html

Kristen and her husband Jeff knowingly let my husband go to prison. They lied to the state and let us fail when trying to prove innocence. We paid $25,000 for literally nothing. No defense, no help, nothing. We would have been better off with a public defender. She told the state that we were liars (even though we have proof of their wrongdoings) and therefore my husband will get to spend decades in prison for something the Mulliners KNOW he did not do. Thanks for that. So much for Justice. I hope karma comes back on you both. Stop practicing law regardless of which side you’re on. You’re ruining people’s lives every day and sadly you’ve ruined ours. The other reviews I’ve read here are 100% accurate so please do not get into bed with these people. Do your research and don’t repeat our mistakes. It will literally cost you everything.

Her husband and her work together, act like they're a caring team to help you or your loved one. Once she has the money, there's no work, no researching cases, no great Motions, let alone a Motion at all. Easy to take cases, make deals and walk away with the money and no work. Next case? He seemed to be oblivious to my case issues. Said he didn't like computers and failed to read my emails. (I was out-of-state due to a dying parent). He relied on me doing all research. His sole contribution was asking if my ex-husband was related to an unknown someone who shared an extremely common last name with us. He did not follow up on info that I gave him. Charged me for attempts to call my home phone in Texas when I'd clearly informed him that I was in another state. He was unprepared, inept and more interested in discussing football than my settlement. He cited financial data that wasn't even applicable to either of us... was acting very confused. He tried to be more than a little chummy with my ex during this process. In addition, the attorney for my ex-husband declared he'd been extremely lax at responding to her communications. The divorce was not especially contentious and there were no custody issues, yet it took almost two years to be final. Paperwork was incomplete, omitting important points we'd agreed on in mediation such as my request to resume using my maiden name and the refinancing of the mortgage. He had the gall to say he'd file for that separately. Expensive exasperating muddling.

Slow, dim-witted and ponderous - he missed a significant point of law that had changed in the previous year which was crucial during the middle of an all day mediation session. While his staff is good, and he is responsive, I would not consider using him again. While he won't engage in useless letters and bulldog tactics to run up billable hours, don't expect him to represent your interests very well either. You will need to hound him to bring up points on your behalf.

Hired this Atty. For my son, facing an MTRP felony probation. Cuellar did manage to get him a bail set, which doesn't happen much with probation violations. So that's the positive. Negative, Mr.Cuellar does not return calls, letters,etc... I didn't expect the best results, considering the hard a** judge, but Cuellar kinda all but promised freedom and that turned into a couple years of TDCJ . Overall,I wouldn't recommend him, don't expect your calls to be returned and look around!

Mr.Cuellar was my atty. on one felony case (MTRP) and 2 misdemeanors . In the beginning, was great , SOUNDING. "Let`s fight this" . Went from that to not returning any of my calls , Not letting my family know anything as a professional courtesy . Gave me his word he would visit me in jail (3 times) , Never did . Only returned a call when I mentioned the State Bar . Very unprofessional. A seasoned 'jailhouse lawyer' could have resolved the misdemeanors faster than he did. So I got ISF (90 days) for the MTRP , but couldn`t get started on that because Cuellar couldn`t/wouldn`t get me a court date to resolve simple,Non -enhanced misdemeanors ! There you go, choose wisely! Doesn`t even have a secretary to take phone calls, just leave a voicemail and HOPE he calls back.

Did not use any of the evidence I brought him, did not let me object when the opposing side repeatedly lied on the witness stand about me. The only thing he did that I asked for was to ask the opposing side to pay for my legal fees since it was a bs suit, yet he did it after they repeatedly lied on the witness stand so it sounded like I was a complete degenerate who was unjustly asking for more than I deserved. I hired Norma Gonzalez in 2014 for a divorce. She required a $5000 deposit. She assisted with filing the initial papers. We never made an appointment to the court since I reconciled with my spouse. we had some exchanges via email mostly with her assistant. Once reconciled I advised her services were no longer needed and requested itemization of billing and refund if due. I received no response other than billing would look at it. This is after multiple inquires. It's been about a year now. Still waiting. Norma has contacted me since then to support her campaign and donate. I would not vote for her. I feel money is owed to me. Do I still have a case, is the case over? I tried to ask via email, letter, and phone call and still have not received a response. As soon as the opposition asked for documents, this lawyer was real fast to submit paperwork to them without consulting with me first. She told me after the fact that she had supplied the asked for documents to Opposition. I submitted all documents that I thought would help my cause, even created spreadsheets to help lessen the time she or her staff would have to spend creating a spreadsheet themselves. I don't think she ever looked at the documents I supplied. I sent a letter requesting a face to face meeting and 3 weeks later have still not gotten a response or appointment to speak to her. As said in the previous reviews, Mr. Vargas is rude. He seems to be all about the money. I was advocating for my fiancé, who is in TDC. Who was appointed Mr. Vargas during a case. Mr. Vargas refused to help. The only thing that Mr. Vargas did was ignore text messages and phone calls. He showed up one time to a court case. And did little to absolutely nothing besides show up to the courthouse. I was told by Mr. Vargas over the phone that he would help if I was willing to pay the $300 charge that he charges per hour. I offered to pay that $300 per hour; after offering, Mr. Vargas, then said absolutely no. “I don’t want to take your case. I have paying clients that I’m already assisting” Even though he was already a court appointed attorney on said case. Luckily, I was able to contact the court system. And have Mr. Vargas removed from the case. Yes, it took months for this to actually happen. But thank goodness he was removed. Mr. Vargas is a horrible man. He does not want to actually help his community. I do not understand why anyone gets involved in law if they are not passionate about speaking up against the law, For their clients. I contacted Mr. Vargas after the 24 hours had gone by and he yelled at me for 10 minutes about how he did not want me to call him. This was Wednesday and he said he would see her by Friday, 2 weeks later he had not called her and would not return my calls. I called the court and explained the situation. The next day he did show up at the jail and left before seeing my Grand daughter. He came back with 3 court papers for her to sign, refused to let her read them, told her it was for probation agreement. He told her that I was never to call him or the court or the jail again. Mr. Valdez has no business holding a Texas bar license to practice any kind of law whatsoever. I have submitted a formal complaint/grievance to the state bar. He was a court appointed lawyer for a case i had in county court 186 in S.A. He missed completely more than one court appointment. A judge during his absence asked the court clerks in a scheduled appointment "is this the same Jerry Valdez that always shows up late if at all ? ". The clerk simply nodded and said "yes your honor". That's to say he has a well established reputation for being tardy and even absent from scheduled court proceedings. Do not for any reason hire this man. If there was a less than poor or less than 1 star option, I would've picked that instead! I would tell anyone that's in the process of trying to find a parole attorney to keep looking if they're thinking about hiring Paul Hampel. I hired Paul for my husband, this is not the first time my husband has been incarcerated. Paul said that he was pretty certain there would be a good outcome for parole but after 2 parole hearings and a short way, my husband was still denied. My husband is currently serving an 8 year sentence for evading arrest, non aggravated, he has an exemplary disciplinary record, and he's not in any gangs, as a matter of fact - he's very involved in the faith based programs. There was no reason for him not to get his short way other than Paul not doing his job. During the parole process, I requested every time to speak to the parole board and every time Paul's secretary's said my request had been denied. After my husband was denied his short way and set off for another year, I called everyday, 2 and 3 times a day, and Paul wouldn't talk to me. The girls who answer his phone always say that he's either not in the office or he's on the other line or he's in the middle of a parole hearing, they've even put me on hold and left me there for 15 or 20 minutes until I just hung up. The secretaries sounded irritated or put out when I called and asked for any information - they would always tell me if they hear anything they would let me know and in the almost 3 years that he represented my husband I never received one phone call from that office - I was the one calling them when I noticed his case was in review on the computer. This office has horrible customer service and all they cared about was getting their money, although Paul Hampel is cheaper than what other attorneys charge, it's just not worth it - he's equivalent to not having an attorney at all, so you might as well keep your money. In the end you get what you pay for - and for me... They have my money and I still don't have my husband home with me :( Needless to say I fired him after my husband didn't make his short way. Don't make the same mistake I did by hiring this worthless attorney

I’ve known Hector for years… my family has been living an ongoing nightmare for almost 3 years now, and we consulted him on the matter. Decided to retain him, and the case ended up being dropped. It didn’t go anywhere, never even set foot in court or even zoom court for that matter. We’d discussed the likelihood of getting any part of the $7500 retainer back at our initial consultation, and were assured we’d most likely see some return. Fast forward and now being told we get none of it back. He referenced the contract, and said the retainer is nonrefundable, however I do not find that information within the contract. We requested an itemized statement, which he was annoyed by, and days later when we received it, saw that a couple of listed items do not even make sense, and every item listed was charged at an in court rate. I genuinely feel like he played on the emotions, vulnerability and turmoil of myself and my family at the time we chose to retain him. It’s extremely disheartening to think that a friend would do this, considering that this case involved my daughter and grandson, two of the people closest to me that are my world.

Hector has been a friend of mine for over 10 years. I hired him for my personal injury case. It was a heartbreaking experience, poor communication, poor results on the case ,including his assistant Ray using salesman closing tactics on me . Overall waste of time.

I was able to communicate with Mr Duganne, until I paid him a substantial amount. Now he will not answer phone, or return text or emails. It's like he fell off the face of the earth! I never received any copies or haven't found any evidence that he's done anything on my case! At a loss for what to do. Live on a fixed income and it took awhile to save enough to pay him. And now don't have funds for another lawyer! Ugh!

Never answered or returned calls. Always late to court. Did not represent me in the fullest. Just went with the plea bargain instead of fighting for and defending his client. Also, charges even though court appointed.

This guy was horrible. He failed to get protective order in timely fashion or meet with me and tried to convince me of splitting my son 50/50 after the father abandoned, stalked, harassed, and was mentally unstable. He then said he needed an extra $7k retainer on top of $2.5k he already received. I fired him the next day and he refused to give any of the 7k back nor did he provide a single invoice. This man is a THIEF and should not be allowed to practice law for his lack of ethics.

He didn't seem to really work on the details of my case until the very day of mediation. Prior to that, he forgot about our meetings that didnt involve his payment and wasn't prepared for them which left us discussing the exact same things we had already discussed; yet, he had no problem charging me for that meeting and thensome. During one meeting (in which I paid him more $) he yelled and threw papers at me when he got upset that I wouldn't just agree with his point of view of how I should just forget about getting things that the mediated contract noted should have occurred. Yes, I know that complaining about paper being thrown at me sounds silly because it was merely paper, but it should not have happened in the first place. I never felt like he was "on my side" and his advice during mediation was just to give into what the other side demanded since it'll cost more $ in the long run...but that didn't stop him from charging me more than $3,000 after that! Very unprofessional! It'll be a waste of YOUR time and money.

He has insulted my intelligence! He has threatened me via emails and text messages. On a phone call with my husband, he told my husband that I will never see my children again and neither will he. This man has completely sabatoged my case! He has treated me very poorly and unfair because I am a woman and of the minority. He doesn't take the time to treat me with respect, he's extremely harsh especially when he gives information and makes it sound extremely horrible! He was upset with me when I reported him over 3 times to the San Antonio Bar Association and removed himself off my case/filed a Motion Of Continuance just because he personally felt upset. He's done nothing for me but make everything worse! Court appointed or not, Richard's services are the worst! I don't recommend him! He will lie to you and make you out to be the enemy! I pray that justice will be served for my family and I. I don't deserve this anymore and I'm speaking out! Richard doesn't like when you speak the truth against him, he will use it to his advantage and become vindictive!

I used Cynthia for my divorce and custody case, she was a little less expensive than the other consultation with another attorney... I got what I paid for. She didn't return my calls, emails or texts for months and when she finally did she claimed she never got my messages. I used a friends phone once and she answered right away but that didn't work after she had the number. She sat on paperwork, and then worded the decree incorrectly causing me to pay more money than I had to as well as having the attorney general put my child support payments on hold because of the verbiage being wrong on my decree so they couldn't send it to have the money taken from my ex husbands check. When I reached out to her I had to wait over a month to reach her and then she sat on the paperwork again and finally got to court several months later. She sent me a text saying the judged signed and she would send me the decree and my Q-Dro and I never received it nor was I able to reach her again. She was horrible!

I hired Ms Castro because on our initial talk she said everything you want to hear from an attorney. She really Sold me. After that she was unresponsive for months in my case. Several times I poured my heart out to her in many emails about things currently happening in my case & nothing but crickets for a good few months Eventually to my surprise ms castro replied to one of my emails and for the 1st time in a long time she actually seemed interested. then Next email I got was an itemized bill detailing the charges & I was quickly confused that the bill was at 2300 dollars I couldn't believe it!! How!! I almost never talk to her!!Well apparently, every single email she sends to you or anyone regarding case, or her paralegals sends to you or on your behalf will cost you. every email was $75-250 drafting a temporary order another 700.00. They easily eat up your retainer and then send you a bill for the other things that haven't happened. appearing in court, hearings, drafting other orders ETC. At the end I received a bill for an additional 2000. on top of the 2500 I had given her upon hiring her. For BARE MINIMUM WORK. She doesn't care about her clients or the outcome of the case. She just cares about how much money she can get out of you. Be aware.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
