Discovered new evidence in the middle of trial but did not request additional time to review the evidence. Felt like he was doing just what that court and the city attorney wanted him to do instead of fighting for my rights.

In 2014 , I was a 19 year old single parent who just got out of an abusive relationship so I was vulnerable. She told me she was a lawyer and can help me get support for my son and I since his father did not want to be a part of my son's life. She charged my $2500. I just started my first job so we both agreed $500 a month. After several emails of her telling me she hired private investigators, gone to court on my behalf and asking personal questions about my life and the fathers she stopped replying to me after I gave my last payment. I never heard from her again.

I worked with this firm on a small project. I confirmed the project, and made sure to re-confirm the cost of a project and capture it in an email. When the bill came, it was essentially double. I spoke to them about it, and instead of taking responsibility for their error, they simply tried to negotiate with me over what I would pay, even though our arrangement was clearly laid out in an email. For a firm that has very high bill rates, this is certainly not the way I would have hoped they would conduct business.

Money that we gave to Mr. Givens and the documents he claimed to pull up to review to consult a case. He has not produced documents, charges our credit card before we hired him and has stopped responding. Next stop reporting him. Very disappointed since my parents neighbor recommended him and we have yet to tell them what Mr. givens did.

Ms. Siler represented our company in an administrative procedure which took place in San Diego. She came to the litigation unprepared and this negligence cost us a lot of money. She was not responsive or communicative and it also seems she was not knowledgeable enough to handle the case. Moreover she is a poor negotiator. Not mature enough to handle tough negotiations. There are many other lawyers at Gordon Rees and I would use her.

Update from my Google review: So it’s been a few months since I wrote those reviews. I called John’s office nearly weekly trying to find out the status of finishing my case. Of course he had my case in storage and needed to get it out. He tried to use the excuse that he had never been in this position before, asking to have the insurance company issue a new check, when he did exactly just that at the beginning of my case. He also mentioned that he wanted to close this case as soon as possible, saying that there was nothing in it for him, only for me to say that maybe that was the problem; he has no incentive to get me my money. Needless to say, I called this week to hear that my check is on his desk. What? I was out of the country for a few weeks and I come back and it’s done? Nope. Of course not, he actually just has the original check out of storage. It only took him nearly 4 months. He then stated that he would give the insurance company a call once a week and let me know. Really? At this rate I’ll be lucky to have my complete settlement in the next couple of years. So, I’m at my wits end with garbage! Sadly, John was referred to me by a friend of the family who’s a local Judge here in San Diego… Second Update: It’s been several months now and we are still in the same place we were a year ago! At one point he said it was complete and I should be receiving the remainder of my settlement in a week or two, only to find out the check he had to negotiate with had expired. I just continue to call him and be a thorn in his side and hope the squeaky wheel gets greased, but he doesn’t seem to care about doing what is right, which is never a good attribute when hiring to attorney…

Reached out to Kristen Fritz for assistance during a family crisis. Unfortunately, my experience with this attorney was extremely disappointing. Not only did they she fail to listen to my concerns, but just flat out displayed a complete lack of empathy. Instead of trying to understand my situation, taking the time to just ask some basic questions, she immediately assumed the worst and approached the situation with a rude demeanor. I would not recommend her services to anyone seeking compassionate and attentive legal representation.

I was very dissatisfied with the results. Mr. Raven claimed it was a simple case of former employees "stealing" from us including our database and it was a million dollar case. We had forensic evidence of the entire contents of a hard drive being copied to an external hard drive before the computer was returned. He told us it would take $100,000 total including trial and at $75,000 said it could take another $100k or more because it was "more complicated." In the end we went through mediation. I felt initially I had an attorney that really wanted to fight for me. In the end I felt as soon as the money was coming to the end, I was a number. In fact, I felt a bit bullied during mediation where he said I had to settle and he wouldn't represent me any more. I wish I would have looked around more and found someone on contingency or had an agreement that at $100,000 it would go to contingency. My corporate attorney found another case exactly like mine before we filed suit or hired Mr. Ravin and this case ended with very favorable results and while initially Mr. Ravin was aligned with what my corporate attorney found, we strayed from the original simple goal of fighting back from people who were thieves. There really was no reference to the other favorable case and I don't know that Mr. Ravin even consulted with the successful attorneys. One of the perpetrators was a corporate officer in my company and had to return his small equity stake. This was definitely one of the most trying ordeals in my life but I believe you have to stand up for yourself. In the end this "win" was not much of a "win" other than the perpetrators knew I wasn't going to role over. You really need to ask the question "if it is such a good case, why won't you take it on contingency and what could happen during the case to make your attorney walk away from it." Also, find a ceiling where if you reach that they are still willing to represent you and take it all the way. If you go to mediation, keep in mind the mediator (at least in my case) will be sympathetic to both sides. For me the mediator wanted a win for both sides and to have a settlement the end of the day. I feel the other side won and I lost, because when is it a win for another party to be able to stay in business, steal your database and all your IP and the amount they pay in the settlement wasn't enough to cover the attoney's fees and costs incurred. Getting the equity back in the end could even be meaningless if the company doesn't succeed. Finally, make sure you get an attorney who will be a buffer for this negative energy. Another attorney who I admire greatly recommended against the suit because she knows what a toll it can take. Her advice was if it consumes more than 10% of your time, it's not worth it no matter how bad it is.

This guy is a disgrace to his profession. I hired him awhile ago (when he was with Good, Hemme and Peterson) . He was completely unknowledgeable! Opposing counsel ran circles around him. The pleadings he did produce where loaded with typos, blunders, wrong dates and misspelled words. Information shared with him under the guise of the attorney-client privilege, meant nothing to him, which he openly shared with opposing counsel, much to my detriment. I am still seething from his representation and complete ineptness... He was eventually a party defendant to an attorney malpractice lawsuit.. where he and his associates paid in excess of $63,000. Even at this amount, he got off cheap and was nowhere near the mental aggravation suffered by me as a result of his poor representation. AVOID AVOID AVOID, there are plenty of other attorneys you can choose from.

After a decades-long relationship for my own trust/wills with no problems, I engaged them to monitor/enforce my father’s estate and inheritance. The results were extremely disappointing. Lack of follow-up, lack of digging into details, ignoring pertinent facts and warning signs, months between communications that should have been days. It appeared they either had no interest in enforcement/litigation of estate cases and/or were not interested in anything less than a case worth $100k+ in fees. I am now suffering through $10k’s of legal fees with a new attorney (on top of the $10k’s already invested) unwinding shady maneuvers from the opposing side that could/should have been caught and addressed years ago. Very disappointing – I do not recommend.

I was reported to the medical board following a credentialing process based on the advice of an investigator to the medical staff office secretarial staff. There was no specific issue identified. I then underwent an open ended fishing expedition which included my 20 year old well documented substance abuse history which had previously been treated and monitored. I never knew what I was accused of. I was never provided a due process procedure. I don't think you need to be an attorney to see that this is absurd. Attorney Zeigen was hired because he stated he knew how the board worked and had been a previous medical board prosecutor. After a year of ongoing bills and no new information, my attorney took it upon himself to erroneously identify an issue, then submit a guilty plea and requested a reprimand stating it would not hurt my career and this way "everybody wins". I complained. In the wording of the reprimand he then again made decisions without communication which had to be changed. He told the medical board I was "difficult to deal with" as an explanation for requested change. He told me a hearing would cost me my life savings and I would not win. When confronted he then stated he developed stress and atrial fibrillation and had not gotten paid and terminated services which resulted in the medical board reneging the agreement. I was told Renee Threadgill, the medical board enforcement officer, "had a crush on him". He stated he "needed to consider that he would have future interactions with the board" . Needless to say, this is not the level of professionalism that one expects. There was a lack of zeal, knowledge base, familiarity with credentialing process or ability to confront his former employers. In my opinion you need someone with the mindset of a defense attorney who believes in you. I made a tragic mistake hiring this individual. If you are a physician run for your life. Good luck.

The worst attorney out there, all she did was take my $10,000 desperately at that. She did nothing to work on my fathers case, all Mary did was take my money and didn’t work on NONE of my fathers criminal case from 2021 to now (9/9/24) still NOTHING heard back from her. This lawyer was hired to fight a criminal case for immigration purposes. She said she would work to fight the case and file "motions" to get the criminal charges re-evaluated. Throughout the two years of her doing nothing, I asked for updates and she always had a rude response saying she would "let me know when she had updates." I had to go to the court myself to get updates. She never did anything and failed to fight the cases within the timeframe for the visa application. Needless to say, she should have been honest upfront if she was going to be able to do this in a timely manner OR do it at all.

Divorce is always a difficult experience and having the proper attorney to help you navigate the court system is a must. Months after my last court date I hadn't yet received a final judgement draft so I send the attorney an email inquiring about it. After numerous emails back and forth one of his responses to me was, "You are divorced, its just paperwork." I disagreed with him stating I didn't have any county recorded paperwork. He then replied, "The paperwork doesn't matter." I continued to request that the final judgement and paperwork be sent for the Judge's approval and County recording immediately. His final email to me was, "The paperwork's done. I hope you are happy now."

Zero out of 10 recommend Mr. Haskett. My experience with him was disgusting. I had to deal with perverted comments and unsolicited sexual advances made by him on countless occasions. But on top of that, the man stole my retainer money and did not do ONE minute of work on my case which caused me to not only lose my case but go bankrupt. I will see to everything in my power that this man no longer is able to practice in the state of California but in the meantime, DO NOT HIRE JONATHAN BLAIR HASKETT!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
