Our construction company, RRA Construction, had to sue a non-paying client and Thomas came as a referral from another attorney for our case. If you are going through or have gone through a case, then you would know how imperative it is to be armed with a winning attorney. Even though we were stressed out of our minds, Thomas reassured us. He helped keep us calm throughout the process. RRA Construction was impressed with Thomas's extensive knowledge and in utilizing his services, we have become a better company in the end. We have Thomas to thank for helping us with our case.

Colin has that rare combination of street smarts and high pure intellect. He also loves litigating, something I'll never understand but helps make him a phenomenal lawyer. Colin is ultra-responsive, always reachable, and pragmatic about litigation strategy and costs. I am now in my second GC stint, and he's my go-to guy for everything commercial litigation, big or small.

Anne is highly knowledgeable and presents her arguments very persuasively. She was on the defense team representing our Company in a complex litigation class action case. Her arguments and briefs presented our case very effectively and as a result we were able to negotiate a very favorable resolution via settlement without having to go to trial.

While she was not my lawyer directly she was my sisters. We were very pleased with Alexis and her fire and wit. She is smart and kind and can be as nice and sweet as she can be brilliant and direct. She handled our criminal case of opening a Medical Marijuana dispensary. We worked for a year and half with the county no ordnance was passed for or against. Well we were arrested 6 months after we opened. We are three sisters and a nephew sisters retired and in their late 50's and early 60's. We did nothing wrong and she defended us admirably. After two years the case was dismissed and we are to get all of our product back. She was true to her word on her costs with incidentals decided upon up front. Great lawyer. thank you Alexis the sisters

As a much younger man than I am today, I was lucky enough to hire Janet to handle a paternity case for me. She help me set all of the necessary legal things that I would need to do in motion. And by the time this case entered itself into the courts (involving child support, and custody issues), not only did I Not owe any back child support, but I eventually (with Janet's help) was awarded full legal, and full physical custody. Janet later successfully handled my divorce, and I could not have been happier with the final results. I have over the past thirty (30) years referred Janet, and her legal expertise to several of my dearest friends, and relatives, and they all still thank me to this very day for those referrals. She is as an attorney without a doubt extremely thorough, she clearly knows how to successfully structure her legal briefs (whether that be at Family Law, or Personal Injury). I'm so very grateful to have had Janet on my side on my side whenever I've had to enter into the courtroom. She lends you her courtroom confidence. You'll feel very protected. She's the very, very best at what she does.

I’ve been in real estate my whole adult life, nearly forty years. Experience has taught me to do my best to stay out of legal trouble and, if it’s unavoidable, to hire the best real estate attorney around. A few years ago, I found there was no avoiding a legal battle with the greedy heirs of a deceased partner. Much of my life’s work was at stake, so I asked some business associates for the best real estate attorney in the City. I was referred to Andrew Zacks in the Russ Building downtown. I told him my story and he agreed to handle the case for me. He brought in a young associate, named Ryan Patterson. Ryan and I worked together for nearly two and a half years on this matter and recently brought it to an extremely satisfactory conclusion. I know Ryan had a number other cases he was handling, but I somehow always felt as if I had his full attention. He is extremely intelligent and knows how to keep his cool. It was very helpful to have such a competent and attentive attorney by my side. I’ve hired quite a few attorneys over the years and I have a pretty good sense of how long things should take and how much they should cost. This is the first time in my career that I haven't felt overcharged for legal services. I'm actually walking away from this deal feeling thankful, instead of burned. Christopher

I've used Kiana for several custody cases with former partners and she's been wonderful. Not only is Kiana sharp and able to make a strong case or defense, but she does a thorough job of researching a situation before she responds. She knows her law. She is also sincerely concerned with the well-being of the children involved which is refreshing in the attorney arena.

Ms. Stewart answered my call for help in a most upsetting matter that I was going through. When I thought there was no favorable out come available to me, she took on my case, traveling from San francisco to nj to fight for my rights, successfully! Her professionalism and caring nature was such a welcome addition to what I considered the battle of my life. I cannot thank her enough nor say enough to relay the legal talents of this woman.

Getting divorced is never easy, but my divorce process was particularly painful. High conflict doesn't quite begin to describe it. The whole process took about two years; so, much longer than most. I can honestly say I don't know how I would have made it through that process without Staci's guidance and support. She was more than just an attorney to me. She was a source of wisdom, perspective and even-handedness that I really needed to lean on during the process. Don't get me wrong, Staci has all the knowledge, strength and experience I could hope for and then some. I first worked with Staci at Sideman & Bancroft and chose to follow her when she opened her own practice. She created an MSA for me that's thicker than a novel and easily handled all the nuts and bolts of the proceedings. But what I learned along the way is that a successful divorce process -- one that puts the kids first and at least attempts to create a harmonious space for future communication -- requires more than just knowledge of the law. It requires an understanding of people and consequences. And I have the experience to prove it! I have since moved to a different state and have had some dealings with local lawyers here who just want to ship off letters and demands to my ex, all of which I know won't work. If anything they'll just make matters worse for me. Staci took on a lot with my case and handled all the filing, all the paperwork, all the back and forth, etc. I feel very confident that my interests and the interests of my children were well represented throughout the process. Furthermore, I threw Staci additional challenges -- such as the fact that I decided to quite my job right as we were trying to finalize the divorce. (Yet another divorce, as it were.) Nothing fazed her. And she gave me great advice not just when it came to the divorce matters in particular but how to "set up" my life for the future; how to make sure I protected myself and my kids and the painful part ended and I could move on with a happy life. I am happy to report my kids are doing GREAT and I am doing great. Thanks Staci!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
