Bob is a young attorney who is already making a good impression. He's bright, surprisingly knowledgeable for his age, and very, very well-liked and respected by his colleagues. He did much of the research and writing for important First Amendment briefs in our case, and he did an excellent job in his cross-examination of me in trial. He's a great resource to his firm and is already showing signs of becoming a truly outstanding attorney. I'm proud to have had him on our legal team.

I am a senior enlisted member in the military and was involved in a domestic dispute that resulted in my wrongful arrest and charge with domestic violence. Mr. Brown was involved from my first consultation with Beckwith Law Firm and then was my Attorney from the day I retained Beckwith Law. He listened to my concerns and gave me excellent guidance on being proactive about my case. I followed his guidance and he continued to build my defense case. Mr. Brown actually did the leg work and got additional evidence in my defense that was damaging to the prosecution’s case. He engaged the prosecution and presented all the evidence in my defense and the case was dismissed in a continuation of the pre-trial hearing. Prior to the dismissal I decided to go to trial with Mr. Brown and felt fully confident in beating the charges against me in trial, if the prosecution would not budge prior to trial. In my second pre-trial hearing Mr. Brown approached the prosecution and dominated the conversation between them, left the prosecution with no option other than an outright dismissal. In summery my parental rights have been saved, my career has been saved, my security clearance has been saved, my right to own and bear arms has been saved, my dignity and honor has been restored and a major burden has been lifted off of me. I would without hesitation recommend and retain Zachary Brown and Beckwith Law in any criminal defense case. Their knowledge, customer care, personal interactions and ability are superb and are the reason why they are in high demand. -Sean PS: Thank You Zach!

I work with Bill professionally with a variety of clients from small, newer biotech companies to larger established companies. I am a consulting in-house intellectual property director (both scientist and patent agent). Because I am trusted to provide expert outside counsel for my clients, I consistently turn to Bill. He does his homework; he is trustworthy and very supportive of the goals of the client. He provides expert advice on patent law, yet always has the big picture of developing a profitable company from a business development perspective. Thus, he is multi-faceted in all aspects of business law. He is kind and approachable and one of the best in the business. I always enjoy the opportunity to recommend Bill and to work with him. He is very intelligent and the one person that you want in the Boardroom with you when you are in any type of conference.

I have had the pleasure of working with Erin for the past 9 months or so. She has been my primary resource as I have been negotiating numerous six and seven figure contracts with a variety of partners. These particular contracts required a very quick turnaround and I found Erin to be extraordinarily responsive. . . often having revisions/suggestions/comments back to me within hours of having recieved the documents.. . . in my particular situaion, this was crucial to completing the volume of agreements that were needed.

My business partner and I have worked with Lindsay on numerous real estate transactions including renovations, contract review and partnership agreements. She has always gone above and beyond to ensure our needs were met even when timelines are limited. After 10 years in the industry, I can't recall a more consistently positive experience; her drive, work ethic and attention to detail is tough to match. I highly recommend her!

Josh has been my go-to lawyer for four years on matters of corporate consultation and advice. Many large law firms do not take on small businesses, but Josh has remained readily available to me and my small business concerns. I find him to be thoughtful, knowledgeable, creative and responsive. If I ask a question outside of his specialty, he willingly consults another specialist in the firm to get the answers I need. Josh is a great resource for me and I highly recommend him.

I hired Ben after a representing myself for the majority of my two cases. I wasn't as successful as I would have liked and I knew my case would end up going to trial. Even though I had a falsely filed protection order granted against me, Ben was able get me a fair parenting plan with DV no restrictions. If you know anything about Washington State law it's extremely difficult for men to get a fair trial. I only wish I would have found Ben earlier in my case and maybe the protection order would have never been granted. My advice to father's fighting for their children is to consult with an attorney asap. One of the best things about Ben and Community Legal Solutions is that they will work with you financially. I would have never been able to afford an attorney if it wasn't for Ben and Community Legal Solutions. To all father's and mother's fighting for their children, I would highly recommend Ben. He definitely went the extra mile and didn't even charge me what he should have. I am grateful that there are attorneys out there like Ben.

As a bonus, he's also a pleasant guy to chat with. Even though I'm just in the seed stage of my startup, Joe still makes me feel like a valued client. He's responded to all of my email inquiries (about a half dozen, to date) within 24 hours. I will be using Joe for my future legal needs. I highly recommend him.

My Mother, then 88 years old, was blinded in a fall, caused by staff negligence at the assisted living facility that my parents resided at. My Father obtained an agreement from the facility, to provide a caretaker for her, in their apartment, for the rest of her life. When my Father passed away eight months later, the facility quit paying for the caretaker, claiming that they were forced to do so by their insurance carrier. My brother and I began searching for an attorney, and Joseph P. Lawrence Jr. of Bellevue, was highly recommended to us, by the law firm that handled our Father's estate. I called Joe, who promptly scheduled a meeting, and he agreed to take my Mother's case. In the course of our meeting, it became clear that Joe shared our outrage at the egregious conduct of the assisted living facility, and their insurance carrier. He met with our Mother several times, to put her at ease with the process of filing a lawsuit, and reassured her that he would do his very best to obtain a just outcome for her, which was very comforting to a now 90 year old widow, who was terrified at the prospect of outliving her resources, with her care giver expenses exceeding five figures monthly. Over the course of the next year, Joe did exactly what he promised. Ignoring the odious conduct and attitude of the insurance carrier, he obtained a settlement, one week before the trial was scheduled, that will allow my Mother to live out her remaining years, without constant anxiety about what she would do when her savings ran out. If you are in need of an attorney who will put his client's interest first, and do so with absolute honesty and integrity, Joe Lawrence is who you need to call. Our entire family is indebted to him.

I found working with Joseph Skocilich to be extremely helpful. He gave me advice having to do with copyright and licensing music for my band (primarily original compositions). He also drafted a master use/licensing sync form for us to use. I found Mr. Skocilich to be thorough and thoughtful in his work and invested in helping me understand the "why" behind what needed to get done. I think all non-lawyers would agree that some of the paperwork can be a bit overwhelming and Mr. Skocilich took the time to explain things. As a small business owner I appreciated having someone willing to take the time to make sure everything was done correctly. I would highly recommend working with Mr. Skocilich and will go back to him next time I need advice on legal matters.

I was connected to Qingqing by ARAG for a regular will update. I was really surprised and appreciative of how far beyond expectations Qingqing went: - Really prompt, professional and caring communication. - Very detail-oriented (including thinking through logic of clauses I hadn't considered) - Went way beyond reasonable expectations (including doing some work over a weekend to have it ready before I disappeared for a month.) Thank you so much Qingqing for going the extra mile.

From late 2009 - early 2011, our band, "Stabbingback", was in a legal battle regarding contracts with a record label. Legal counsel who could clearly communicate the legal preceding without alienating anyone in the process was required. Jim Jackson fit the bill to a T. From the first meeting at his office in downtown Seattle, Jim was kind, courteous, professional and very sympathetic to our situation. From the beginning, he made us priority by working with us on issues such as budget and by timing meetings set around our schedule. In fact, there was very little he was not willing to do for his clients to ensure we had the best chance for success. The one trait which really prevailed during this entire ordeal was Jim's honesty. We cannot emphasize enough how amazing it was to get the truth, good or bad, whenever we had a meeting or phone call. Questions were always answered , strategy was always clear, and details were never hidden. When a lawyer gives you bad news you expect to walk away irritated or angry, but not with Jim. He has the skill of presenting information to remind you it is not the end of the world. No dramatization. No additional stress. Needless to say, it was appreciated. The question comes up often, "Did you win?". The answer, no. But we did not lose either. We have not been able to make all responsible parties get the their just reward, but we were able to shut down the responsible record label for good. We feel like out of all the outcomes that could have come from this, ours was certainly an acceptable one. Thank you Jim for all your hard work on our case. We know without a doubt, without you, we would not have been able to do so much with so little. Thank you. Gage Sifuentes And Josie Straka

I had a tax problem. An embarrassing, mostly-of-my-own-making tax problem. I'd tried Ronnie Deutch from the TeeVee (not great). I'd tried a place that went out of business the year after I used their not-so-awesome services. Then I got ANOTHER letter from the IRS, and, not being an accountant or a lawyer or particularly cogent when it comes to business, I surfed the web and found someone who was (a) local-ish and who (b) didn't have any bad reviews. And that person was Sean Kennedy, of Tollefsen Law. I did see a good review of the actual Mr. Tollefsen... so I didn't fly completely blind. But in this instance I just sort of lucked out, and I am writing this review so others who are similarly searching have some data on which to base their choice. To put it simply - Sean got my stupid rear end out of some serious trouble with the IRS, and he did it quickly, efficiently, aggressively, and for a very reasonable price. He is RESPONSIVE. I got immediate relies to emails. I got emails at 6:30am. I never had to wait. I never had to remind. He just leapt at it and did it, fast. He is KNOWLEDGEABLE. I went to meet him to review the case, and he quickly laid out all the parameters and options in a way that I understood completely. He didn't obfuscate or over-sell. He was accurate and on point. He has a dry sense of humor. And yes, I know... this is both subjective and not really to the point. Except that it IS good to know if an attorney is personable and "gets it." And Sean does. I'm a fairly flamboyant personality and have a quirky presentation, and Sean dealt. He was not just pleasant and professional, but he had that twinkle in his eye that let me know, "I am dealing with a human, here. He's a mensch." Mark my words, when you are up to your eyeballs in scary IRS stuff, that quality is like gold. So I would totally recommend Sean if you have a tax problem, need help, want someone who gets back to you and explains things so you understand them, and doesn't make you feel like an idiot. He's aces in my book, and I would retain him again if anything else ever came up. Two brief notes: 1) I said "local-ish." His office is in Lynnwood, not Seattle. I don't have a driver's license, so I had to take the bus. I was expecting him to be in downtown Seattle, but the bus ride is a doddle, and quick, so no points off. 2) His paralegal, Belinda, is a delight. She's quick and efficient and friendly AND puts you right at ease when you arrive. Excellent customer service. Kudos.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
