After a consultation with this attorney on a subject I have never heard of called shaking baby syndrome I left our meeting very informed, confident, that one day soon my God son Rico Dion Green will one day be released from prison for a crime that never occurred Shaking Baby Syndrome. Rico D. Green received a 38 yr to Life sentence after the child he took on as his own son that he love so much suffered an accidental fall down some apartment stairs in Tulsa Oklahoma 2009. I would recommend Attorney Heather Kirkwood without any hesitation. Sincerely Antoine H. Sr.

Joe thoughtfully listened to my needs and provided creative solutions for me to resolve a complicated landlord-tenant dispute. With Joe's hard work and due diligence I received a much more favorable result than I could have hoped for. He was very knowledgeable throughout the whole process. In addition, the issue was resolved very quickly and made my life much less complicated than it could have been.

Jill was amazing as a special education attorney and as divorce attorney. She worked dilligently and also kept the whole process non-emotional. She was able to redirect me in a positive kind way. Her primary concern was always mine and the children's best interest. Although divorce itself is painful I found that working with Jill was never a problem. She treated me with respect and was very professional.

Alisa Brodkowitz came highly recommended by a colleague of mine. She worked on a 3-year personal injury case for me in which I was involved in a bus accident. I had to have two spinal surgeries which resulted in permanent nerve damage. Through those 3 tough years, Alisa was very supportive, not just by being my attorney, but by going that extra mile by genuinely caring about my well being. It takes a lot of pressure off an injured person when you are allowed to be human rather than seen as an injury. She kept me well informed throughout the legal process and also added that personal touch which made a huge difference in me recovering from my injuries without the added stress. We won our case in March 2008 and I couldn't have done it without Alisa's expert knowledge and skill. She's a great attorney and I highly recommend her.

Kathleen was an attorney I worked with as an expert witness in a medical malpractice case. I have since referred cases to her for review and would not hesitate to do so again in the future.

Jennifer Lane was recommended by my company's internal IP team to write a new patent application. Although she has an engineering background, she was new to the invention subject, which relies heaviy on quantum physical chemistry. I was very impressed with how rapidly she mastered the concepts and produced a draft application. The final draft was completed with fewer corrections and much less of my own time than is usually required for our internal process.

Mark helped a first-time home buyer complete a Short Sale purchase of a house in Seattle. He remained diligent, well-informed, responsive, and honest throughout the three month process. We contracted with a flat fee agreement, and despite unforeseen additional work due to complications with the transaction, including two liens against the seller, his efforts did not slacken in any way. He also drafted a special contract that we entered into with the seller's tenant so that they would move out when the purchase was concluded so we immediately occupy the house. As a risk averse first-time home buyer I could not have hoped for better counsel and professionalism. Highly recommended!

A friend referred us to Jehiel Baer to help with our case against Allstate. We were pleased and impressed by his services and guidance. He walked us through the whole process, addressed our concerns, and always available for questions. We truly appreciate his honesty and willingness to help without collecting cost upfront. He got our case to dismiss quickly and made certain Allstate cannot return to sue us again. This gave us a peace of mind and helped eliminate lots of unnecessary headaches. We are so thankful to our friend for recommending us to Jehiel.

Kari Lester is a great attorney! I felt that I was part of her team verses on the sideline watching. She kept me informed through the whole process. When you meet her she is petite and unassuming but when she is in court she becomes this feisty attorney that takes no crap (excuse my french). She responds to emails quickly and if she is unable to answer your questions in a timely manner she will have someone from her great team of paralegals reach out to you. I would recommend her to my family and friends. She is Intelligent, energetic, personable, and feisty all the things you look for in an lawyer.

I met Stewart while he served on the board of a small arts group. Although he handles some of the largest cases in the Northwest, he gave us the same diligent, ontime, thorough, thoughtful and strong insight for a number of years. I used to wonder how he could display the same commitment to us as he did the big guys with the big bucks. The answer is that he never cuts corners. If he's in - even as a volunteeer as he was for us - then he's in. All the way. What a delight to work with a person of such integrity.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
