I am a small, independent game designer, and Susi Stuart was my contact at Aeon Law for filing my copyright. We had a hiccup with the artists handing over rights, and although it was much ado about nothing, Susi was very responsive and helped me assess the situation and gave me sound advice. I intend on employing Susi's talents in the future.

Susan has a great sense of how IP strategy should align with Business strategy. She was interested in understanding our technology as well as our business model to be sure that we were developing a valuable, defensible patent. Prior to hiring Perkins Coie, I had read blogs that warned against going to big law firms as an early stage start-up in order to conserve cash and have more personal attention, but Susan and her team proved just the opposite to be true. No time was wasted educating them on the science and the entire legal team felt like part of our company throughout the process. I would recommend Susan to anyone whose IP protection is essential to their company's business strategy.

Earlier this year, I learned that I had to pay several years of back child support. I only had a small amount of money to offer for both, my future attorney and the mother of my child. Having been in legal trouble before, I have had several experiences with attorneys. The first attorney that I spoke with about this issue used a song-and-dance that I heard before,"I can do this...if...if... then if....maybe...". The one thing that the first atorney was certain of was his price. His price was twice as much as I would end up spending, well beyond what I could afford and the money that my family would end up lending me to settle this issue. The second attorney that I spoke with was also named "Marcus". He wanted about half as much as the first attorney, but only had a couple of years experience. However, he was willing to offer payments. Being a person with very limited resources, I thought I would call him back. When I called "Marcus" back, I heard a different voice. The voice was soft spoken and very articulate. I thought I had the wrong number. As I would soon learn... I did have the wrong number. I had actually dialed the number of Marcus Lang, a Seattle, Washington attorney that has been handling personal injury, wills and family cases for more than 20 years. After admitting my mistake, Marcus was kind enough to listen to the details regarding my current situation and past history (he offers a free 30 minute consultation). He not only said he could help, but made me feel confident that he could help. Very importantly, he offered to handle the case for $500 less than the previous attorney named "Marcus" that I had called. I know $500 may not be alot to many of you, but to me, it could be the difference between being homeless or not. After a couple months of negotiating, Marcus was able to get the amount that I had owed down to a fraction of the original amount. After pleading with family members and friends, I was able to get a couple of loans to satisfy the settlement. Throughout the entire time, Marcus responded promptly to my emails and was very professionally. When my finances were exhausted at the end, he worked for next to nothing. Unlike ANY of the other attorneys that I have had reperesent me, Marcus Lang has been the only one to care about doing his job professionally and my welfare. If you need an attorney, Marcus is the best! Thank you, Marcus.

Rich successfully challenged a USPTO trademark ruling for my company. I had a self-submitted trademark application get rejected, so I proceeded to get quotes from six different patent and trademark attorneys in the Seattle area to fight the ruling. While Rich was on the higher end of the hourly rates, the amount of time he quoted for the work was much less than others, making him the value option. His response to the trademark ruling made it clear that he was extremely knowledgeable not only about trademark law, but also about many previous and very relevant trademark rulings that could bolster my case. He was very professional and well worth the money.

Excellent Attorney - I was fortunate to find Steve Kelley through a referral back in 2003 and we have been using him ever since. Steve is a brilliant attorney with great ideas who thinks beyond the current situation looking forward. He is a very knowledgeable and experienced negotiator and handles all matters in a very professional manner. I have such confidence in Steve's ability I have asked him to take on a matters that were not in his area of expertise, like Union issues, Buy America Act, etc, I think he enjoys the challenge. Steve has the resources and takes the necessary time to research matters so we are at the forefront on each approach to all business contracts and dealings. He is a valuable resource to our business and impressively wise and tactful. I highly recommend Steve Kelley, he is a testament to what a good attorney is made of, honest, ethical, hardworking, and very competent.

Mike and his team represented me and a former employer in a recent case. Throughout the process I was very impressed by the professionalism and expertise that he and his team demonstrated. They demonstrated a deep understanding of what was a complex case, and were also willing and able to explain things to me at whatever level I wanted/needed. This kind of case is never really going to be enjoyable for the client, but he certainly made it extremely educational. Mike's clearly a real leader in the employment field, and I'd recommend him wholeheartedly.

I worked with Mike closely throughout the course of 18 months for a Provisional and then Non-Provisional USPTO application. I am an independent inventor who developed a product for a niche healthcare application. I had called and spoke with several different patent agents/attorneys and tried to explain what I was creating, and Mike clearly was the most helpful and genuine choice. I asked him what the process would look like as I had no prior experience in this realm. Mike was extremely professional, as well as encouraging and helpful in his explanations, and took me on as a client shortly after our initial consultation. He was extremely efficient in hearing out and understanding my product, which is rather abstract as most medical devices are, and had an amazing Provisional application completed in just a couple of weeks. Mike is an excellent communicator and used his skills as a Lawyer, as well as his Mechanical Engineering skills, to paint a thorough picture and claims for my product, that led to an ultimate allowance from the USPTO. I was worried going into the Patent process, but Mike took the lead and always made sure that I was aware of deadlines and all of the paperwork that went into the process. We worked together closely to make sure that my ideas and goals for my product were always captured and made priority, and thorough on all angles . He even helped me through a couple of potential design flaws, and brought nothing but exuberance to the project. Personally, he is very down to earth, kind, friendly and has a great demeanor. I would highly recommend Mike.

Julie and her team helped me through the worst time in my life. Separating from an abusive x, they not only helped me get majority custody of my child, but also got the court to order a domestic violence evaluation. I had zero experience with the legal system and was terrified after being manipulated and abused for years. They not only helped with the legal stuff but constantly encouraged me. I will be keeping Julies contact information for sure!

Richard has a very down to earth quality that lets you feel comfortable right from the get-go. I believe that this was important in allowing me to feel free to discuss all issues that I was having with my business. His approach to meeting my needs is unique, because he takes the time to understand what my objectives are before he starts giving his feedback on the services that he may provide. I really enjoyed working with him. I have worked with lawyers twice his age, and let me tell you that they better watch out for this young hotshot. He has a thirst for learning more, which allows a dynamic process of staying up-to-date on significant law matters, but more importantly he is willing to learn much on the business management side. I run a boutique consulting firm in San Diego, CA that caters to major clients of $100+ Million. Richard has successfully helped me establish many of my contracts. His advice about the liabilities that may be incurred and the risk mitigation strategies have deemed to be invaluable. If anyone would like to contact me as a reference, please email me at [e-mail address removed].

Cindy is a wonderful lawyer. I wasn’t completely sure my case had merit or that there was any wrongdoing on my ex-employers side. She saw the wrong doing, and was my voice when I needed one. I finally felt like I got the justice I so deserved and more. When she would call me, she gave me the complete truth. She never ever sugar coated anything. I was never left in the dark, and if I asked for an update she would always give me one. Even if it was every day of the week (sorry Cindy). So if you need an advocate, a friend, and someone who will listen to you. Cindy is the perfect lawyer for you.

Stephan represented me in a federal case back in 2005.It was a difficult case due to the political climate of the time. He got me the best that I could get in the circumstances. Furthermore he showed thay I was more than just a number or just an obligation even though I was a pro per case. So yes I would say that you want Stephan on your aide in federal court. And as a final note I can tell you Stephan is also respected by judges as well as the probation officers i've come into contact with so far.

Seattle area psychotherapists are so lucky to have Eric. He's not only a very knowledgeable attorney, but a counselor as well. I trusted Eric's advice and expertise when I met him while opening my practice, and my respect for him has grown since volunteering with him for Seattle Counselors Association. Recently, I worked with Eric to clear up the many questions myself and my consultation group had after having attended other Hipaa and ethics trainings. I have been involved in a few different situations that required the help of an attorney over the last 10 years. It can be a very stressful and scary experience. Working with Ms. Tallon Reynolds was the best experience I have had to date. She constantly kept me informed regarding my suite and gave me more than enough time to gather info she needed from me. She explained things so I could fully understand them and was ALWAYS available for a conversation to calm my nerves. Ms. Tallon Reynolds was thorough and very professional. She got the results my family and I needed and made it the best experience it could be! I would highly reccomend her to all and in the unfortunate situation I find myself needing representation in the future, I would call on her without question!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
