Dalton was assigned to me by David Crouse, whose firm I had hired for my divorce. He came to the first hearing unprepared and expressed to me his embarrassment at his performance. He then quit the firm with my second hearing coming up. It was on a Wednesday and I called the firm daily to try and talk to him and was told he was simply not in each time I called, until the Monday before the hearing, when I was told he had quit and that David Crouse would be handling my hearing. David spent his time at the hearing rambling about his own career, demonstrating that Dalton failed to brief anyone at the firm on my case. David later told me that Dalton "was not cut out for family law." Maybe he is cut out for what he's doing now, but I would worry about him quitting without telling anyone.

In 2009 I was in a mva accident with a corporate company. ( fyi Police report stated I was 100 percent not at fault) I thought hiring Scott cifrese was a good idea because he knew the corporate law world. I was sadly mistaken only after the settlement was finalized. First off Scott was extremely hard to get ahold of and rarely returned phone calls from me in a timely manner if at all. Something deep down told me that he didn't care. (As lawyers only work as hard for you as they care to) I pressed forward hoping I made the right choice. During the settlement I did make a loan shark mistake which I thought Scott should have advised me not to. Or maybe helped me out knowing I had a solid case. He also never contacted anyone in my insurance company which pip would of covered and helped me not be put in the position to go to a settlement loan shark. But the biggest point to this review is about a year after my settlement i find some news out. First off during mediation when we settled, scott told me i have no doctors that back me and say the injuries i still suffer from today are directly related to my car accident. Basically saying i dont have much of a case. So a year after that im in descussion with my doctor who treated me during this time for my chronic injuries. I was still upset and made a comment on how he did not think my injuries were directly related to the mva. He looked at me with confusion and told me that in his legal inogouration (his statement for the case) hhe stated my chronic pain and further injuries were indeed directly related to the mva. I do feel strongly there was malpractice on Scott's part. I also feel he was either paid off or pushed me through the system to get his money with minimal effort.

I have been monitoring cases for sometime and most recently Puryear has been filling in as a substitute for Commissioners in Spokane County. You can clearly tell she does not review the case in its entirety, she personally insults whomever she targets from the bench, and so far I have been able to track that she gets about 85% of her facts wrong. Her decisions appear to be in support of child abuse and neglect as she has refused any sort of evidence showing abuse. Her decisions appear to push some sort of agenda instead of a non-bias fair look as required by the Judicial Code of Conduct. When back into corners by other attorney's she just ends it by claiming its her call. Massive amount of law and code of conduct violations. Be aware if she is substituting you may need to request her off your case to avoid being violated.

Hired Joe 12/3/23 to vacate and restore rights. For 1 year Joe promised that he was making progress and the case was nearing completion. I have many emails and texts from Joe stating this. On 12/3/24 I contacted the prosecutors office personally, to find out Joe had never even filed the paperwork, and there was absolutely nothing in the works with my name on it. I have also come to find out Joe was arrested multiple times in 2023, as well as has pending lawsuits for not paying his bills. I’ve filed in small claims but at this point it’s probably blood from a turnip. Do your research through Pend Orielle and Spokane County and do not hire this person. Absolutely a fraud.

This lawyer has been the worst possible choice for my best friend and especially how much he was paid. Zero communication, zero cooperation, and absolutely horrible people skills. He babbled and was barely understandable when he was talking to the magistrate. He would wait literally last minute to file any sort of paperwork. My friend and his wife had to constantly be on him for anything. I mean, come on, a lawyer is supposed to contact their client at the very least the day before court and explain what will happen and what will potentially be said. Yeah that didn’t happen. My friend had to call him to make sure of things. His court date was moved twice and neither time did Mr. Phelps contact my friend letting him know. Absolutely horrible. I would not recommend him to anyone. My friend wanted to fire him and go with a court appointed attorney because he would’ve had a better chance. $16,000 for a retainer for this clown is absolutely ridiculous. He’s not worth the lunch money I have in my pocket. DO NOT HIRE THIS JOKE!! He won’t keep in contact with you and will side with the prosecution. KEEP CLEAR!!

He took my retainer and didn't do the work. It's been a year of ignored phone calls, Bar Association complaints and frustration. Use Jane Brown for your divorce (excellent) and Pete Svennugsen for your QDRO, even if it seems simple. He doesn't know what he's doing. The work he attempted to file was wrong.

Brian K. Dykman is a nice man and a poor Lawyer. Do not expect return phone calls or emails. He will wait to the very last minute to do anything on your case. He will work the case to his expected conclusion not yours. On top of that he is a thief. Took $500.00 from me to finish my case and never did a thing. Never heard from him again.

Made promises regarding representation that he was not willing to keep. I would recommend you seek representation from any other attorney...save your money.

I was unfortunate enough to be assigned Mr. Horst as my public defender. Met the guy once and then he wouldn't return calls. On my second court date he pulled me out in to the hall and told asked me "what's your excuse for failing or etg (alcohol) testing) " when I told him he must be mistaken because I haven't had a drink since my arrest he told me the judge is going to give me 30 days in jail. It was only after I produced the receipts showing the test days he has filed for me are wrong and that I have not failed a test did he some what understood. This attorney is very bias. She was very unprepared and appeared to not talk to other prosecuting attorneys. Example: the state prosecuting agreed to an early tease from house arrest (2 months early) upon arrival to court it was found that a different prosecutor (ms. Olson) was present. Ms. Olson neglected any recollection of an early release agreement then recommended more time be added on. I personally find her to be very unprofessional for this reason. I'd recommend maybe bumping heads with fellow prosecutors to be better prepared. Further I fully intend to make my complaints very well known on this and other issues with the WSBA.

Hired Mike Wolfe to help with a guarding ship after giving him a retainer of 5k we had a Settlement that It was agreed upon that everybody’s fee were to be reimbursed by the Estate well he tried the oldest trick in the book and put In the settlement that the money was going to him when truly it should of been going to me When I asked him about it he said RANDALL DANSKIN Would be cutting me a ck. Well after hearing that the estate paid my money out to the account I asked when I should expect my money. He went on to say that there was some overages and that I would be getting 3600 of my 5k. I informed him this was not acceptable he has now keep All my money in a effort to get me to settle. Now him and Shawna one of the partners offered me all but 378.00 back which again I did not agree. If his bill was more all he had to do was simply revise settlement. Bar complaint being filed. DO NOT SIGN ENGAGEMENT LETTER YOU WILL BE SORRY. I will update when complaint and claim are complete.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
