Stay away from Paul. The guy seems very nice but once you get to know him it's all a front. Always unprepared for hearings and always bending the truth to try an manipulate situations. Only in this profession for the money. Paul will try to convince you to do unnecessary things just to get paid for them. Save yourself time and money.

I used a attorney in his office by the name of Jennifer. I had a very vile situation with my ex wife and the custody of my children. Jennifer did a amazing job getting everything done. She got me a protection order to boot due to my ex wife's lifestyle. I live in California so she had to take extra steps to get me the paperwork but she did. If i ever have a family matter again, i will definitely use again without hesitation! Thank you so much Jennifer for getting me full custody of my children. You literally saved my kids lives. Also she set me up on a convenient payment plan so we could get this done. Thank you once again! You are wonderful! Jeremy s.

Gina and her associates know well what they’re doing. Trust them and trust the process, they know the way. Personally, I entered into the divorce process lost, scared, and intimidated, and at the end of my process felt supported, empowered, and relieved. I felt that my child’s and my best interest was always at the forefront thru the entire process, my gratitude is immeasurable for their considerations. Divorce sucks, and with the right support network, it sucks a little less. Thank you, Gina, you will always have a special place in my heart!

I was served with an outlandish protection order making very wild claims months after my ex-wife and I had divorced. The news was shocking to me and I only had 10 days to find an attorney to represent me. The original temporary order held little information. Gina agreed to represent me, was upfront about cost and options. She allowed me to mail bomb her office with all the potential texts, communication and support documents I had. She was able to sift through the piles of information and to suss out what was useful and not useful in my defense. More than that she was able to identify the true cause of the problem, a desire to change the parenting plan for support money. I was the primary parent and my ex tried a desperate act. Gina worked with my ex-wife's attorney to find a new balance to find a solution to make the time lost with the kids and the financial balance my ex-wife was seeking. She had a heart to make the case less difficult on the children and me. My ex-wife did not agree to any of the terms. And still wanted her day in court. Gina danced circles around the plaintiff, expertly wielding the information and the understanding of a reasonable person's standards. The case was ultimately thrown out. Gina even followed up with me personally to ensure that I was ok. I recommend Gina, especially to anyone who really is in a place where they know they are being wronged, and are willing to let their attorney be the expert on what is reasonable.

This guy was incredibly unprofessional. He began by asking my age and then asking if I get menopausal, moody... like his wife (he also used a few swear words to describe his wife). He was extremely unprofessional, rude, condescending and arrogant. He kept talking about himself and how good he was, then would ask me a question about my case, then interrupt me mid sentence and begin talking about himself again. His conversation was incoherent, random, and uninformed. Finally, when he began outright criticizing me I just hung up on him. I would never trust him to work for me.

David Gardner was the trustee on my Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. He failed to check out my creditors. He did NOT sell my home for the price listed on the Purchase and Sale Agreement wherein he sold it $25,000.00 under the purchase price as recorded on the Real Estate Purchase & Sale Contract. He overpaid the Mortgage Company after I repeatedly informed him that the pay-off amount was $20,000 plus over what I actually owed! David's mission to sell my home gave him a huge pay-off! You need to keep an eye on him if you are assigned him as a trustee. And if you do have assets consult with a QUALIFIED HONEST ATTORNEY!

Hired David to handle a variety of matters for my business. He concealed a known conflict from us, taking on an important arbitration. When we discovered the conflict, he had to withdraw three weeks before the final hearing. David’s ethical failure hurt us and our interests. We had to hire a new firm and pay additional expenses to get them prepared. I would not trust David with any matter of significance.

I'm not sure where other reviews are coming from, but Bruce Hondle handled my legal matters with the utmost professionalism, knowledge, foresight, and suggested things my past attorney's never thought of, he is on top of his game, extremely knowledgeable and was upfront with everything the entire step-of-the way. Not only is Bruce Hondle a superb attorney but also a darn great CPA with up-to-date tax-law knowledge. His attention to detail is second-to-none and sets him apart from the rest, extremely important when drafting documents and financial planning. I have finally found an attorney with whom I truly trust.

I agree with the other two clients who also gave him poor ratings, and stated. (Mr. Hondle takes advantage of people. For example: he will charge you for a 10 second response to a phone message but use his full bilabial rate.) (And instead of speaking over the phone, he would rather send an itemized letter stating all of the things you owe him money for, and then not return your calls if you want to question him.) These statements above are true as I also have experienced them with Mr. Hondle as are estate attorney. Once was more than enough. About the only time Mr. Hondle would return my calls was when another one of high-priced exorbitant bills were due. Mr. Hondle conducted his business with us in a completely unprofessional manner, and charged us a small fortune! Mr. Hondle does not even have his own office, as he works out of his house.

Suzanne has represented me in several different cases. Each result has been in my favor. Her preparedness and knowledge were such that the other side had little or no chance at victory. She kept me "in the loop" each and every step of the way, telling me what to expect and reminding me to stay on track. She's ethical, and informed. She will tell you how it is and will also tell you when to settle your case so it does not drag on forever. She is tenacious and will not give up. Everyone knows horrible lawyers whose sole purpose seems to be billing hours. Suzanne Bartleson provides her clients with good value for her time, excellent knowledge of the law (in several different areas), and a strong work ethic. I have recommended her services to many people in the Spokane community who have used and relied on her law skills. I would give her 6 stars, but there are only 5.

i hired her based on the add in the yellow pages which indicates caring about children. i meet with her for free consultation and decided to hire her. at that time she indicated to me that i should seek 50% custody of our 6yr old son based on my work schedule which allows me availability to be a parent. one day after i hired her, my wife had her attorney file and serve a temporary dissolution. i was told that i needed to write a response to the dissolution to also be filed. i was not given any instruction to achieve this but was able to get the information from the internet. we emailed my response back and forth to edit it. i virtually wrote about 80- to 90% of the documents. at one point i questioned the condition of her edits and was told defensively that she had to spend 3 hours rewriting my documents because they were poor. i doubt that. when we meet with my wife and her attorney to file our legal seperation the next week, i asked ms. bartelson about the 50% custody and she told me that if either party is not in agreement that 50% custody would not occur. i told her that if she had told me that early on, i would not have requested it because i knew my wife would never allow it. this also caused my wife to get overly aggressive. at the time of our filing the legal seperation, i had agreed to move out of our home within 30 days. at the filing i was given documents to sign but was rushed and really not able to review them. the one that i should have reviewed was my child support schedule. the documents were filled out incorrectly and caused me to have to pay $200 more in child support each month. ms. Bartelson was aware of the correct figures but allowed the opposing attorney to use her schedule which was based on a copy of a worksheet that i had filled out incorrectly during our edit process.my wife retrieved the copy off my email account and provided it to her attorney. a big issue that i stated to ms. bartelson was that i needed to have access to the shop at our house for the winter to store things during the divorce process. once the legal seperation occured, my wife began a process of harrassment which i saw that i could not stay in our home for the 30 days i was given. i immediately moved out and my wife and her attorney began requesting that i vacate the shop also. ms. bartelson contacted me several times about this issue even after i stated to her that it was not possible and that it was the only agreement that i asked her to maintain. there were a few more motions filed by my wifes attorney which were resolved by agreement. i hired ms. bartelson in the beginning of oct and by mid dec. i reviewed my support schedule and realized that i was paying $200 more on my support than was needed. i called ms. bartelson to discuss my feelings about her short comings with my case but before i could list the multiple issues she cut me short and said she needed to remove herself from the case.at that time there was a motion in court to allow my wife to take our son on a winter vacation for three weeks. i was opposed to this because my time with him was reduced to 20% visitation and i wanted him to stay with me for the 3 weeks.she abandoned me at a critical point. in 2 1/2 months i spent $4,500 utilizing ms. bartelson and i spent $1000 in child support overage which i never recooperated. where divorce attorneys feel that they are due $200 - $250 per hour to provide poor service or to charge you for their time when you call to see why they are not working on your case. i spent an extra $2,800 on my next attorney which did absolutely no legal work but was to help file my finalized "mediated" dissolution. the $2800 was spent on me calling his legal aid from feb. to june to see why the divorce was not finalized. in the end, the majority of the dissolution documents that were signed and filed were from my original documents. my wifes attorney used my drafts. something is wrong with spokane's divorce attorneys.

Selling off a subsidiary can be a monumental task. We came to Mr. Cleveland for his previous history with us of incorporating or 38 year old company in 1994. Mr. Cleveland brought his wealth of experience to our initial meeting. He helped us to design a contract with short term and long term security for the sale of the company and protections and guarantees of sustained valuation, should the contract fail. All of this with nominal fees. I actually expected a much larger billing and was satisfied with his rate for a corporate sale. I, wholeheartedly, recommend Mr Cleveland and look forward to using his services again.

Untrustworthy, large bills for no results, failure to communicate. This was a trustee/guardianship situation, Mr. Cleveland allowed this situation to drag on for months and created a situation where only Mr. Cleveland and several other lawyers would benefit. For example when I asked a simple question - "what would be the advantage to me" where another attorney, the former guardian, would receive an entire amount of a trust as part of a TEDRA agreement Mr. Cleveland responded, "I do not understand your question". Mr. Cleveland, in collaboration with other attorneys, wrote an almost incomprehensible, 7 page TEDRA agreement and either was unable to refused to discuss it with me but expected me to sign it. Mr. Cleveland, hired to act in my best interests, allowed the former guardian of my incapacitated mother, a prominent established professional guardian, to essentially act as a, "guardian of the estate", months after her death. I am unaware that there is in fact such a position as, "guardian of the estate". In this case I, the designated estate executor, principal beneficiary of the estate, my son, the secondary beneficiary of the estate, two relatives, and several creditors of the estate did not receive funds for over a year after my mother's death. Mr. Cleveland, my paid attorney, required to represent my interests, refused to contact my son who apparently had some issues with my performance as a previous trustee/guardian in an attempt to resolve these issues. I drafted a proposal to resolve these issues with my son but it was ignored by Mr. Cleveland who carefully avoided discussing this. Mr. Cleveland was essentially controlled by the lawyer/guardian who had access to all the funds in my mother's estate during the last year of her life and over a year after her death as a self appointed, "guardian of the estate". Mr. Cleveland could have filed a motion with the court to discharge my mother's guardian that would allow me to proceed with execution of her will as estate executor, by distribution of funds to pay bills/cost and beneficiaries in a timely way but he refused to. I believe Mr. Cleveland was sympathetic to the former guardian and lawyer that represented the estate and had a primary interest to these two attorneys instead of to me, his client. Mr. Cleveland deliberately failed to inform me of a scheduled court hearing that I found out about during a periodic review of court filings at the court house. During an email exchange between Mr. Cleveland and my self a days before the scheduled hearing, Mr. Cleveland did say there was a scheduled hearing. Mr. Cleveland did not lie to me but avoided telling me about the hearing until I asked. Generally I found Mr. Cleveland to be evasive and untrustworthy, only acting in his best career interests - I fired him.

Robb quoted a price over the phone, but didn’t honor it. When we met he spent a lot if time talking about himself, skiiing, and his injury and then charged us for it, even when we attempted to move the conversation forward. He was not helpful in giving specific examples and options when it came to estate planning or creating a will. He had zero handouts or links or information to help guide us along during the process. Carl Hueber is either a legal super genius, or extremely lucky. He filed a losing appeal that made it possible to fix a losing PRP to get my conviction overturned. What!? Yeah. I'll explain that later, but first... Hueber first represented me at resentencing. He shook the prosecutor's hand before it began, after which I felt hiring him was a huge mistake: the handshake didn't look like the one you see before a fight. Hueber wasn't all that impressive in the courtroom, and his motions all failed(two different things, but related). However, he was a good salesman, and suckered me into getting him a bunch of money to file an appeal. Here's where the lucky or super genius comes in. The PRP filed by another attorney had omissions(at my request because I am a moron) that, by technicality, would/may have caused it to lose unless it were appended. By filing the appeal he kept the sentence from becoming final. This prevented the case from being time barred from collateral attack. This allowed the PRP to be appended. This got my conviction overturned... After a decade. Hueber also represented me at a bond hearing. Backstory: Before trial I was out on my own recognizance(OR). I paid $0 bail. It was just my promise to show up to court. After trial, I filed a motion for an appeal bond, which was granted. My sentence was 9 years to life, I did 10 years, and had my conviction was overturned(retrial ordered). I never missed a single day of court, have no criminal record at all, and my behavior was exemplary. With no conviction, my sentence basically done, being out on OR the first trial, no failure to appears, no priors, nothing... the bail amount he procured was six figures, and not much lower than when I had just a couple months into that 11 to life sentence. Yes, it was 11 and then turned into 9, but that's another story. I don't know if my review was that helpful, or if Hueber was all that helpful. He's either lucky, or a super genius. That makes him either a bad attorney, or a bad-ass attorney. These are just the facts. Basis for the rating. THE APPEAL: Six stars or No stars. RE-SENTENCING AND BOND: The rest of his representation was as disappointing as the average attorney, so three stars. Weighing it all in, and the importance of each - the average is 3 stars with a deviation of 2 stars. That means he should have 1 star or 5 stars and this review was pointless.

It seemed as though my lack of knowledge in the legal field was recognized and taken advantage of. I ended up with 10k in charges for something colleagues have had taken care of for much less. This lawyer was hired to represent me for post-secondary support. In spite of me being timely with my filing request, handing him all of the necessary documents, meeting with him and calling his office weekly to find out the status of my case, he was so incredibly tardy with the court filings that I got penalized by the justice system and didn't receive any post-secondary support. Bryan did NOT represent me. He was completely unprepared for court, would come running in at the last minute, and was not knowledgeable as to the specifics of my case. In spite of his lack of preparedness, he still received payments of nearly $10,000 in fees - while costing me $10,000 in lost support. I wish I would have fired him many months ago.

This is an incompetent, ineffective, greed filled attorney. When YOU need a strong, capable advocate, this guy is NOT at all "on your side", He is ONLY on his side. And the billable hours he submitted, 5 minutes billed for a 1 minute phone consult. I have the phone bill to prove it, but I was told that they "round up" for billing. I have been cheated and duped by this "human". We will see what happens when the WA State Attorney General finally investigates the numerous complaints on him.

I hired Mr. Geissler about 20 years ago after hiring multiple unprincipled Spokane attorneys previously; in a four year nightmare, I lost every hearing to include the week long trial. Geissler is poor at developing overall strategy and writing compelling legal arguments even when the facts and the law are overwhelmingly in his client's favor. To be fair, Geissler is adequate tactically; however, without a guiding strategy the "little wins" are meaningless. Also to be fair, the court was highly prejudiced against me. There is no doubt that Geissler is primarily money driven, but I've never met an attorney that wasn't. I will also point out that no attorney is going to do what is right if it is going to adversely affect their future relationships with the judges that they have to work in front of everyday; their livelihood is more important than their character and integrity or your children. Overall, I think that Geissler's ineffectiveness is because of his average intellectual prowess more than any other factor. I give him a poor rating because when you're kids are at stake there are no excuses. p.s. don't think I am just speaking from bitterness because I was able to win custody of my children with some post-trial behind the scenes efforts of my own - I'm sure that Geissler chalked this up as a win for him, but it wasn't.

Priscilla A. Vaagen was the attorney for the other party in a child custody case. She ghosted my attorney every time we had issues. It was ordered through the court that any time I wanted a UA from my ex all I had to do was request it. Priscilla never made sure they were completed. She would not send the answers to my Motions causing me to get 6 continuances because she either did not show up for the hearings or she was not prepared. That cost me double money since I still had to pay for my attorney. Then she decided she no longer would represent my ex so we are on hold waiting for her to get another attorney. We have been in the court with this case for 18 months and it is still not resolved due to her incompetence. Run ... don't walk away from this attorney.

The online referral tool does not work or has not been maintained. No one answers the phones. Not sure what value this bar association provides. I can't see any reason to ever go here except to be frustrated.

It was not a helpful experience at all. Despite me giving the information he asked for He just replied with "That's all I can give you with the information you provided" All without asking me questions for what information he needed. The person was clearly preoccupied with typing and despite him stating he didn't have access to the online portal he was somehow able to see what had been filed under the case #. I am beyond disappointed with how I was treated and dismissed. Its pretty clear the SPOKANE COUNTY COURTHOUSE is in dire need of a revamp and house cleaning. It is 100% a racket.

Had 3 lackeys start and then quit associating with Phelps and associates, then finally 1 represented me in court and may as well been working for the prosecution as he knew only what he heard from the prosecution. I would have been better off representing myself. THEY ARE RIP OFFS

This attorney is a scam artist. We hired him for a family member. Paid him 5 thousand dollars down. And he did not not contact us or do anything for months after. When we complained and asked for our money back, he claimed he would do the case for only the 5 grand. A year later, he sent paper work to collections going after me for 10 grand. Do not hire this money grabbing liar.

This attorney failed to communicate with clients, failed to provide adequate counsel, and failed to notify client of pertinent court motions and hearings to the point that the case was lost. Then they sent a bill to the client after telling the client there would be no cost until the case was won. Unless you want some one to screw you over in regards to your lawsuit, stay away from this attorney.

He did get my divorce done but it cost a fortune and took forever. Plus his communication is obsolete. Can never get ahold of him.

He took my retainer and didn't do the work. It's been a year of ignored phone calls, Bar Association complaints and frustration. Use Jane Brown for your divorce (excellent) and Pete Svennugsen for your QDRO, even if it seems simple. He doesn't know what he's doing. The work he attempted to file was wrong.

Brian K. Dykman is a nice man and a poor Lawyer. Do not expect return phone calls or emails. He will wait to the very last minute to do anything on your case. He will work the case to his expected conclusion not yours. On top of that he is a thief. Took $500.00 from me to finish my case and never did a thing. Never heard from him again.

This attorney took days to return phone calls. Would not meet in person before court to get the details of the case. Gave me bad advice that resulted in financial loss. Made promises regarding representation that he was not willing to keep. I would recommend you seek representation from any other attorney...save your money.

Mr. Dixon is not a skilled or competent lawyer and my experience as his client was very disappointing. It was very hard to communicate with him and he often talked down to me. He was very hard to work with and I do not recommend him.

I was unfortunate enough to be assigned Mr. Horst as my public defender. Met the guy once and then he wouldn't return calls. On my second court date he pulled me out in to the hall and told asked me "what's your excuse for failing or etg (alcohol) testing) " when I told him he must be mistaken because I haven't had a drink since my arrest he told me the judge is going to give me 30 days in jail. It was only after I produced the receipts showing the test days he has filed for me are wrong and that I have not failed a test did he some what understood. That god for the prosecutor and the judge because this guy is a real pos.

This attorney is very bias. She was very unprepared and appeared to not talk to other prosecuting attorneys. Example: the state prosecuting agreed to an early tease from house arrest (2 months early) upon arrival to court it was found that a different prosecutor (ms. Olson) was present. Ms. Olson neglected any recollection of an early release agreement then recommended more time be added on. I personally find her to be very unprofessional for this reason. I'd recommend maybe bumping heads with fellow prosecutors to be better prepared. Further I fully intend to make my complaints very well known on this and other issues with the WSBA.

I would recommend you go to someone else if you need a QUADRO. He charged me $1500, it took 5 months for him to get my Quadro to me, and then told me that he would charge me $400 an hour to actually file the QUADRO with the court-I had to do it myself!

Hired Mike Wolfe to help with a guarding ship after giving him a retainer of 5k we had a Settlement that It was agreed upon that everybody’s fee were to be reimbursed by the Estate well he tried the oldest trick in the book and put In the settlement that the money was going to him when truly it should of been going to me When I asked him about it he said RANDALL DANSKIN Would be cutting me a ck. Well after hearing that the estate paid my money out to the account I asked when I should expect my money. He went on to say that there was some overages and that I would be getting 3600 of my 5k. I informed him this was not acceptable he has now keep All my money in a effort to get me to settle. Now him and Shawna one of the partners offered me all but 378.00 back which again I did not agree. If his bill was more all he had to do was simply revise settlement. Bar complaint being filed. DO NOT SIGN ENGAGEMENT LETTER YOU WILL BE SORRY. I will update when complaint and claim are complete.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?

  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
