I never received a phone call back. I originally used this firm for two cases. I'm disappointed I inquired regarding my divorce papers for enhanced drivers license and where I can get a copy of divorce for DMV.

Jeanella kept telling me I was going to get full custody of my daughter. My daughter's lawyer and the judge both stated that most of the time they do 50/50 custody between parents. And that would mean, me...the only working parent, paying the deadbeat dad who doesn't work, child support! Spending over $2,000 to hire Jeanella was a mistake because she was pushing me into a hole with what clearly was going to be the verdict here, with me paying child support for my daughter who I take care of and support fully and she resides with me. Then Jeanella said she needed more money until she could do anything else for me (this meaning my money ran out) so I fired her and closed my case. THEN...she hits me with a bill! How can you give someone a bill when their money ran out!! Sounds like a scam to me.

Ms. Baldwin completely threw me under the bus which I didn't realize at the time. As we were down to the wire in my divorce case and the judge waiting on her bench for our trial to begin and negotiations were being done to prevent a trial an agreement was made. When the divorce decree was typed and I read it there was a line in there about cohabitation. When I asked her about it she waved her hand across it and told me it was standard language in a divorce decree. I fell for it. Also no equitable distribution after a more than 25 year marriage. I don't think she defended me to her fullest ability and almost feel like she was more on my X's side. I'm not sure how to have this situation rectified or if I need to just live with it.

Only lawyer I know who didn't do the "free consultation". Charged $275 and then a $2500 retainer fee on top of that. My divorce was easy peasy. No arguing. No court appearances; yet it took 18 months for her to actually get paperwork done. A co-worker just asked me if I would recommend my divorce attorney. Big NO!

He will lie to you over and over again until the case ends and brush you off with a sentence you could have got representing yourself, although he is probably different as a payed lawyer because I have heard other people having a better experience but as a payed lawyer! Every other person who has had him as a public defender on the other hand will tell you try an get a different one. Don't settle for him as a public defender

I sought Mr. Canzano's advice regarding a sensitive matter that is especially important to me. I sent him an email on 06/03/2022. Rome (Romolo) responded to my professional, well thought out inquiry with a terse and unprofessional three sentence response. Despite his response, and hopeful he would agree to talk to me, I brushed off his poor attitude. I sent him a respectful (something he lacks the ability to be) reply on 06/06/2022 and followed up on 06/10/2022 and he ignored both of those inquiries. I strongly recommend you look elsewhere if you want professional assistance. Ignoring a prospective client is highly disrespectful and unprofessional. I was very hurt by his conduct. Avoid Rome Canzano; you will save yourself a lot of grief. If AVVO allowed me to do so, I would rate Rome zero stars.

Had my mother pull out of her trust w/my father when she was on her death bed and mistakingly made incorrect changes. He was not willing to admit his errors. I might as well have had someone off the street. She missed most court appearances, never argued or negotiated anything on my behalf, never kept me informed of what was going on or what to expect. I can't comment on how knowledgeable she is because she basically did nothing. When I asked for a refund of my retainer, she would not refund ANY of it and claimed she put in more time than I paid her for...USELESS

I received a ticket from New York saying that i had to many points and i needed to pay an additional 400$ i went to the lawyer about it he said it couldn't be since i am from Pennsylvania. He got back to me saying that I needed to pay for that ticket. I came to him asking for a refund because I was not happy with his services and he refused and was very rude to me and yelled.

I had this attorney close on my current house 9 years ago. Went to buy a new house in 2010 and my original abstract was destroyed in a flood in his office. He REFUSED TO PAY FOR A REPLACEMENT which cost me $400.00. Am taking him to small claims court. Do not use this firm!! He is responsible for replacing the abstract, but refused to do so. There are millions of attorneys - choose another one.

I was assigned this attorney by Judge David Bruffett in Cicero, New York. This attorney and Judge Bruffett are friends. After being assigned I experienced an almost three year battle to get this attorney relieved as my assigned counsel. He was condensending, arrogant, and in league with the judge and DA's office to get me convicted. He did absolutely nothing on my case but email me a one (1) page undated Discovery request, and nothing else besides showing up in court. We exchanged many emails in which I suggested an investigator, preserving evidence at the police precinct (videos) and a myriad of things which he ignored. I truly believe he was involved in a conspiracy to have me convicted. After almost three (3) years of battling with my court appointed attorney, I found out he was fired from Legal Services for failing to do any work on his defendants cases including mine. Thank God. I witnessed him speed when leaving the court and I recorded him. When I confronted him about his speeding he said he was "entitiled to speed" due to his "years of service as a public defender." Hmmmm...really? He thinks he is above the law and does not have to do work despite receiving payment for his services by the County. This man accused me of being prejudice towards him for being Jewish and old. I told him I serve a Jewish Messiah as a Christian and was not prejudice against anyone especially people of the Jewish faith. I do not recommend hiring him especially after being fired from Legal Services. I was forced to file an Attorney Grievance Complaint for his failure to zealously represent me. It is being considered and I believe I presented enough credible evidence to back up my claims. Do your due diligence before hiring this attorney and check into his background. Dav Savlov his former boss was forced to reveal his firing to me. He prejudiced my case by failing to do any legal work of substance and by having me do my own motions and legal work. I have faith I will be exonerated but it was a hard journey dealing with ineffective assistance of counsel. Again, I warn you, be careful and think twice before hiring this attorney. He is toxic and has severe issues.

Terry J Kirwan took my Civil lawsuit for $ and had no experience in the field. He told me I could sue the Women my deceased former Husband gifted my family's money too (after paying him, he suddenly remembered I could not sue the Woman because she was "gifted". We also sued The Life Insurance Co. For allowing my former Husband to withdraw the Life Insurance money. The Life Insurance Co. Had a Federal law protecting them called Erisa Law, Terry never even knew what that was nor did he research it? He just wanted me to accept the $10,000 offer from the Insurance company to settle it, I was disgusted. We also sued my Divorce attorneys for Legal Malpractice for not freezing the Policy so my X could not withdraw it. Terry used Insurance Law 3113...WRONG LAW, I needed a Qualified Domestic Relations Order to freeze my X Husband's Employee Welfare Benefits Plan! Terry didn't know! Not did he have me sign a Retainer until I ASKED FOR ONE. He called me to Wire him $3000 more and he hadn't even filed the case yet! I declined until complaint was filed. I lost on every matter while Terry did NOTHING. He never told me of communications from the Defendants or court dates! I fired him. He would not be fired so the Judge fired him on the record. I mediated against him to get my $ back, he brought a Lawyer to represent him against me, a lay person! I won more than 1/2 back. I later sued my Divorce attorneys Prose', as my own Attorney, for not providing the QDRO to lock the Policy in my Divorce and won a settlement! Oh, and the Woman who was "gifted" countersued my for $100,000 for Terry's mistakes. He had published her bank account #. She and I dropped our cases against each other, I had to handle that myself also...and Terry published my Social Security # and my X's in our complaint! I had to have it redacted! The people we were suing he gave my information too! What a cluster f#+k! I grieved him with the NYS Bar association and the Disciplined him "off the record"! BEWARE!

Mr. Killmartin is far from a good attorney because he does not manage his time well, he is too busy running for every office in the political world to do his other jobs. While runnig for offices' is respectable, it would be more respectable if he was able to stay ontop of his other duties as well while running. however he pushes his clients aside to make his own life better. he holds grudges and punishes people for his mistakes. morally he is not a good man or attorney, and not a respectable person. "only eat what you can digest" meaning... Stop taking on more than you can handle. Also lieing is a sin. a liar is one of the lowest forms a man can be, and this is mr. Killmartin. He was my attorney and after he was fully retained, he stopped answering phone calls, was un prepared in court and in the end we lost the case because of his professional misconduct. and professional neglet. i since have hired a new attorney and appealed the courts decision and without much work at all my new attorney was able to win the case. this shows how neglectful he is, if he would have done hos job he also would have helped me win.

Once he had my retainer fee, he was inaccessible, delegating responsibility to a younger attorney who was honest but incompetent. Stay away from this guy.

She's looking to do the least amount of work possible until she retires. The horrible thing about it is she works for Hiscock Legal Aid. People that can't afford attorneys go to her and she doesn't nothing in return. So if you can't afford $300/hr+ attorney, you won't receive any justice in Syracuse, especially if you hire Monica Heath.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?

Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
