As the US Pardon Attorney, she has processed a pitiful number of pardons, 9 or 10 in three years. Oyer also denied my pardon application recently, which had been pending since 2017 with no reason given. I was told that I may "reapply" in two years. Big deal! It took me considerable time and expense to get as far as I did! She should step aside and let someone else take her place who is serious about the position and is held accountable by someone.

I ended my relationship with him feeling worse then when I started and in a worse legal and financial situation. He showed up to court at the last minute, making me feel alone and unsupported. He showed up to an online zoom arbitration with a professional mediator in a sweatshirt, which I thought looked sloppy and unprofessional. He yelled at me for being upset that a legal decision went against me, making me feel shamed and judged for feeling upset in very stressful circumstances. I tried to put the whole affair behind me, so we settled my account, I paid a final bill and tried to focus on moving forward. I was unfortunately contacted after we ended our relationship and he told me that he "forgot" to send me a bill that I had to pay.

I found this lawyer to lack the proper knowledge required to handle my case. He did not know the law well when I asked him questions, and instead of telling me he would have to research it, he just babbled. He was not responsive to my calls in a timely manner. Returned my call 2 days later. Was shopping for a good firm to handle my case but decided to take my case elsewhere before he messed it up. Wish I could have spoken to some other lawyer at the firm. But, was referred to another firm by a friend and did not want to waste anymore time or money. My company is worth too much to me and seems to me this particular lawyer is not capable of handling complex litigation..

Conducted all his meetings with opposing council without my presence. Refused to allow me to participate or listen. Suggested settlement payment be made to his office. Was distracted by phone calls on my billable time. I received a very low dollar settlement even though I was wronged and had extensive email records and journals. It is not clear he ever read the extensive reports he required me to write since he deflected the issue when asked to recall the facts from them. He was very interested in settling out of court. He prefers to do all negotiating by mail. He claims to negotiate over the phone. He refused to meet with opposing council in person or was unable to get their cooperation , not sure which. He does not respond to client suggestions. He is very knowledgeable but unsympathetic and more concerned with fees than fighting for the client. He has all the patina of an aggressive attorney but lacks the professional fortitude to loyally fight for the clients rights. He does not take notes during meetings and each meeting requires a recap of the facts. He calls in other lawyers whose expertise is marginally related and who consume time reiterating the case. Bring a book to read in the waiting room even when there is no one else there. Pressures you to provide a credit card for retainer fee. Deflected requests for copies of all communications from opposing council, there were no phone records kept. He requires motivational incentivizing on a frequent basis to close the deal. Has no interest in client follow up.

I was sentenced to 36 hrs community service. I did them but when I went to court the prosecutor wanted to go to trial & asked for 30 days because I did not do them at an approved place. O'Bryant just stood there & didn't say a word. I had to speak up & explain that I was given no instructions in court & searched online for hours but there is NOTHING about how & where to do community service. It turns out they were supposed to give me some papers with that info when I was sentenced. I had to beg & plead to be able to do ANOTHER 36 hours at an approved place-O'Bryant was ready to just let me go to DC jail for a month. I'm a white suburban female with nothing but traffic violations in my record besides this misdemeanor in question. When I attempted to contact him he NEVER ONCE returned my phone calls. This mess is still going on.

Stay away from this lawyer. I was contracted with her for do my immigration case. She was not helpful and always disappear. She will tell you wrong information to move things forward then refuse to admit she was misleading. I finally got her fired and changed to another qualified lawyer who told me all the information Tina filled in is very unprofessional. Any experienced immigration lawyer would not fill anything like that. Plus she has no ability or skills in technology, I need to do all the online filing and posing for her as a client. Last but not least, she did not perform all the tasks in the contract yet(only 1 step is done), and she is claiming that we already spent all the retainer and refused to refund any money. In all, do not sign a contract with her, she is an extremely unqualified and lazy lawyer. She would spend 1h to argue with me in a 3 page long email rather than do her part right at first. I don't do reviews very often, but for her I need to cause I don't want anyone be trapped with her again.

The United States Constitution provides for separation of church and state. As a lawyer Ms. Windham is obligated to support this, which she has failed to do. I wish I read the review before discussing my case with this guy. I wasted time and money for this guy. He is very rude and seems to be ready for retirement. Save your time folks. And for Fitzpatrick: you seem quite depressed. As a buddhist, I wish you the best. Treat people how you want to be treated. Karma comes knocking no matter how you feel. You take care. P.S. I knew what you were going to do Friday based on how you treated me. Very unethical. I can do better by myself. Enjoy life...it's not so bad.

Mr. Fitzpatrick was slow to respond to client inquiries and was a very poor advocate in terms of trying to get the best result for the client. He insulted the client and refused to explain his reasoning to the client, citing to legal provisions that upon further inquiry ended up not being validly applied. He pushed the client into settlement, and allowed sloppy settlement language to be included in the settlement agreement, further hurting client's interests. Plus he charged way more than he was worth!

Horrible people, horrible service. They have the most obnoxious and irritating staff I have ever dealt with my whole life. Ashley sounds like she is moaning on the phone even at 10 AM when I'm trying to discuss a serious matter, I couldn't wait to hang up the phone with her. What is wrong with these people? Very disrespectful and unprofessional.

This Law Firm misleads people and charges much more than what they say they will. They will intentionally stay on the phone with you to increase your bill. This firm does not provide a quality service. The lawyers are not concerned with your issues, only about charging you what they think they can get away with. Look elsewhere--you will do better. They try to respond to questions that they do not have full knowledge of and still charge you for their "lack of knowledge." Biggest mistake I made was seeking their advice.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
