I had a very complex case before the Erie Co. Family Court. I wish I met Anthony Cervi, Esq. years ago. I was dealing with opposition who cares about nothing but themselves; not the child. I went broke from them always charging My card. They never responded to My concerns only worried about their next payment. Nothing ever changed… I started at a 645, didn’t need much but they didn’t do nothing to better My credit. After a year or so of no improvement, I changed My bank info so they’d stop charging My account for literally not doing nothing!

On August 27th at 2:00 PM EST, I called your office seeking legal advice and assistance. Unfortunately, I encountered an individual who displayed an unprofessional and discourteous attitude. When I initially explained my situation, she abruptly informed me that your office does not handle such matters and hung up without allowing me to ask any further questions.
I called back to inquire about the specific cases your office does handle, as I believe my civil rights have been violated. However, before I could fully articulate my question, she interrupted, stating, "I said we don’t handle this, and I said have a great day," and then hung up on me once again.
Frustrated by this lack of assistance, I called a third time to request to speak with a supervisor. On two separate occasions, she answered the phone only to immediately hang up. When she finally responded, she simply said, "Please stop calling."
I would like to bring this matter to the attention of her supervisor, as this behavior reflects a lack of customer service skills and professionalism. It is disheartening to encounter such a response, especially when reaching out for help in a difficult situation. Individuals who prioritize dismissing potential clients over offering assistance should not be in positions where they interact with the public. As a college student in need of legal help, I expected better treatment.
I hope this feedback is taken seriously and that appropriate steps are taken to ensure others do not experience the same level of disregard.

I contacted Jill for a support arrears case. Jill had stated that she worked for Cayuga county support for years, I thought I would be okay.
She had told me that support court is a court of equity and then tried to solicit a $4,000 retainer, I paused as she seemed shady.
Then she started contacting me at 1:00 and 2:00 a.m. with statements to the like that she will contact me anytime that she wants and that I would be lucky if she contacted me within 2 weeks if I had left a message. This all happened out of the blue, I did not try to contact her after hours.
By New York state law support court is not a court of equity, working for a Cayuga county support for so long she had to have known this and was just looking for my retainer. I would never hire her and I have contacted the New York State bar association about her deception.

I have to say she is the best lawyer I have ever worked with and I have worked with more than a few over the years. You don't have to take my word for it. You just have to watch her work. If she looses a case than there isn't a lawyer in the association that could win it. My case was across state line. She new how to handle herself and she push and won the case. The worst experience with an attorney ever!! Gave us false advice - and then backed out on his words, even though 2 other people, including another attorney, were present on the conversation. We all heard the same thing. Because of his bad advise we lost a buyer, and took bunch of unnecessary actions. All in all, because of him we lost 70k.

After he got his retainer he did nothing. No document production, no motion to get documents from prior counsel. Seven months. He told me nothing. He even tried settling my case without my knowledge. I know because I saw his email from another counsel. He must have made a deal with the other side without my knowledge because he harmed me terribly in my case.

Doug has worked on my case tirelessly for over a year. His knowledge of the law and consideration of an exceedingly delicate situation has been extraordinary. He has both been incredibly professional and personable. I would recommend Doug to anyone who is in need of someone that is both caring and requires an attorney who is well-versed in the nuances of the law.
In my case, Doug was able to change a seemingly impossible situation - an "onion that needed to be peeled layer by layer" as he put it. He is very thoughtful of the fact that my ex is extremely abusive and helped prepare me for what abusers typically make their next steps. In doing so, I have been better able to care for my children in devastating circumstances. He also has helped me better understand the legal process and what is typical vs atypical in the court room. Having that background, the legal jargon and proceedings were easier to comprehend in what has previously been very overwhelming.
While my case is not finished yet, I expect Doug to keep fighting with the veracity and intelligence that he has exhibited thus far and will post again at the conclusion of my case! I think the best I can say so far is thank you for everything Doug!

I had an attorney and was not happy with her services. I consulted several lawyers, all of whom wanted my case for a significant retainer. I consulted with Mr. Barics who reviewed my case, and said that my current counsel was properly representing me. He explained in detail what should be done and what to do if the judge didn't do what she was supposed to do.
I was ready to change lawyers, and Mr. Barics was high on the list. However, his honesty in telling me to stay with my current counsel and declining to accept a large retainer is worthy of mention.
I stayed with my existing attorney, and the case proceeded nearly exactly how Mr. Barics predicted it would.
I did not retain Mr. Barics then, but I am impressed he would decline a client when he felt the client was properly represented with current counsel.
My former attorney has since retired and if I need new counsel Mr. Barics would be my first choice.

I did not intend on posting a negative review, until every other means I have taken was ignored by this law firm.
I was a client of Ms. Hawthorne for approximately 6 years between 2015 & 2021. I thought she represented me well in child custody matters at that time.
A new issue arose in July of 2024, so I contacted her office to retain her for the new matter. I paid the full retainer fee up front, and Ms. Hawthorne agreed to represent me.
Long story, but here is the point of the review, & caution to others who rely on reviews to choose an attorney.
1) Ms. Hawthorne repeatedly dropped the ball when it came to being prepared for court dates. I would ask a simple task be handled, & she arrived at court telling me she didn't have the information needed to pursue. It could have been addressed by a quick phone call so the information would have been presented on that court date.
2) Ms. Hawthorne avoided ALL of my emails with questions regarding legal representation & how to proceed with our Court matter. I was only able to get basic responses and interaction with her staff member, Ann.
3) I ended up having to fire Ms. Hawthorne 3 months after retaining her due to ZERO direction and follow up from her on Court deadlines. I was left on my own, when I hired her for legal representation.
4) I fired Ms. Hawthorne before all the retainer fee was used up, and by law, & by the legal code of attorney conduct, any monies paid has to be earned. Refunds are to be issued for any unused portion.
5) I terminated Ms. Hawthorne's services on October 3, 2024 & requested a current statement of services rendered. I requested a refund on that date. It was nearly a month before I received the requested statement. It showed that I had $855 CREDIT.
6) I sent several emails to Ms. Hawthorne & her office, requesting the refund, as I had to retain a different attorney to represent me for the job she failed to do. I was charged double for work Ms. Hawthorne didn't complete, and new attorney had to follow through on.
7) I filed an attorney grievance for her unethical standards pursuant to the Attorney Code of Conduct. Ms. Hawthorne lied in that case & claimed she WAS representing me.
8) When emails were repeatedly ignored for my refund, I called the Office & left a message (10 weeks after initial requests)
This is why I am resorting to a public review. No other means I have followed through with are being received and dealt with. I am just asking for the money I paid UP FRONT to be returned to me for the unused portion of $855. I have other attorney bills to cover thanks to Ms. Hawthorne not doing her job.

Complete neglect.
During my divorce proceedings, she repeatedly told me that it was fine for me to move out of my house and start my new life before the court hearing took place. As a result, the judge said I abandoned my children to which I then had to fight for custody. She had no remorse for her poor advice and only said, “I don’t know happened.”
I decided to change lawyers and after thousands of dollars spent, I was finally able to obtain partial custody of my children.
