Randy Golden was amazing in guiding me through a tough cross border divorce case. Not only was he supportive, he gave me choices and kept me informed and involved over a protracted 143 week case. When it came time for trial he was perfectly prepared, and presented with astounding elegance. I went in expecting the worst, and came out with so much more that I ever anticipated! I highly recommend Randy Golden!

I wouldn't recommend. I was looking for an advocate in my legal separation case that was filed against me. He filed necessary paperwork, but he reacted negatively when I asked him specific questions, as if I was questioning his ability rather then me just trying to understand the whole process. After the retainer was spent and still had more work to do on a very simple case, I decided to represent myself.

My experience with Teddi Ann Barry in the Thornton office was quite long as the opposing party tried to fight us all the way. Teddi Ann came thru with all the difficult choices requested by the opposing party. We were however successful and won the Dissolution of Marriage case. I will be ever grateful to Teddi Ann and her staff.

I hired Attorney Matt Patton in July of 2023 to help me with my divorce. From the very first moment I met Matt, he was not only professional and knowledgeable, but he made me feel supported, empowered, understood, and at ease. What should have taken a few months to process took over a year because of things outside both of our control. Matt was there for me every step of the way and felt my frustrations as his own. He did everything in his power to get this handled for me quickly and efficiently. Throughout, Matt was communicative, kind, and represented me with integrity and grit. One of the more notable parts of Matt’s representation of me was whenever we had mediations or hearings in front of the Court, he stood up for me in ways that I have never been able to do for myself. To have a lawyer like that in my corner meant more to me than words can describe. I can honestly say that I would not have been able to make it through this process without him. Matt was able to get me everything I asked for and more. For the high level of representation I received, and for the care he gave to me and my case from the beginning to the end (especially in such an emotionally charged and delicate situation), Matt was worth every penny I spent to hire him as my lawyer. I could not give him a higher recommendation. Thank you, Matt, from the bottom of my heart, and thank you to your amazing Paralegal, Amanda, for making this process as least painful and as smooth as possible given the circumstances. You guys are truly the best! -Karina

At the beginning of the divorce case there was minimum contact. When a deadline near there was more communication but was last minute. Once it came time for mediation the charges really increased and it felt as the information gathered in the 9 months prior was not retained. In the end I would have probably saved money by representing my self because the permanent orders we 99% my exes request.

There is no better firm, skilled attorneys, or group of professionals to trust when you find yourself in crises. We are specifically talking about Nathan Osborn (Attorney), Alyson Evett (Attorney), and their team (Bonnie Hakes Finance Coordinator), Connie Streich (Paralegal), Amanda Bielak (Assistant) at Montgomery Little & Soran, PC. From day one we felt protected, on the absolute worst days we felt unconditionally supported, and until the very successful end we were completely satisfied. Dealing with Wick Law…best to heed their negative reviews. They seem more “Wick”-ed than helpful as burn through a retainer. We met with them to discuss case only to be told at the END of the meeting we were being charged for it. They said we should be glad they were only charging for one lawyer during the consult since they decided to bring in two lawyers to sit in. Two for the price of one they said laughing at the end. I was not aware in slightest we were paying to tell them our case! Then took thousands in retainer (not realizing money was drawn monthly even though they were not actively working our case) which continued until just a few hundred left while we were wait on insurance to resolve our claim. Worst part is when we were trying to move ahead and re-engage (and actually have them pursue action) they sounded interested- then just ignored us - 2 months no reply even after multiple attempts from us to hear back from them. A professional should at least tell you if they were not wanting to take action further. We would have appreciated that before they drained us of several thousand in retainer draws!

Michael Palmer came highly recommended to me by a very well- respected lawyer in Grand County, where I live and filed. His name is Frank Parker. Frank spoked very eloquently about Mr. Palmer. Frank Parker has also recommended countless clients to Mr. Palmer with great satisfaction and successful results. Mr. Palmer provided a complimentary zoom session with me for a consultation, he was very patient with his time and answered all my questions thoughtfully, and he was very thorough! What I like most about Mr. Palmer is how patient and compassionate he is. Because I have never engaged a lawyer, the task felt very daunting. After the consultation, I decided to hire Mr. Palmer and Palmer Family Law. Throughout the whole process, he never lost sight of my needs, and always give me "sound advice"! Richard Lane provided an amazing experience for me when resolving my insurance case after I was hit by a drunk driver. Mr Lane overcame my reluctance to deal with an attorney by being forthright and patiently explaining the insurance process and how he could get it resolved. After not getting anywhere with the insurance agents for months, Mr Long was able to get everything settled very quickly so I could receive the settlement. He was very reasonable on the percentage that he accepted as payment and I would confidently recommend Richard Long for anyone who needs a lawyer for dealing with the nightmare of insurance. The senior associate Katherine Karstetter allows her clients to violate laws and encourages them to file false government reports saying they have a right. Falsifying reports to the FBI, police, making calls to anyone who knows me and scouting USA is not okay trying to get me fired, and trying to stop my advocacy, training and support of disabled, low income, and children is not okay. Shame on you. Glad you defend people who have no defense. It is okay for your client to have my information my family's information our addresses, phone numbers, license plate numbers on sticky notes in her possession. You defend and believe pathological liers who report false felony accusations, who has a personality disorders when you know they are mentally ill. Shame on you. Abusing and neglecting your child is not okay, and continuing to affect children's and others mental health, and physical health with inappropriate interactions is not okay. Your law firm should be about facts and the truth not defending blatant liers and allowing them to stalk and abuse people. But yes you are a shoulder to cry on that obviously does not have the mental capacity or morals to distinguish right from wrong. Shame on you.... I had good recommendations for Mr. Goldstein from two sources, and chose him for my divorce attorney due to his reputation for being pragmatic, and tough. To my surprise, my discussions with my husband went smoothly and we agreed on everything. We are both educated, processionals. I wished to save money, and not file unnecessary paperwork, etc. Initially, Mr. Goldstein hesitantly worked with me, however we ultimately had a difference of opinion when I did not feel certain motions needed to be filed out of "an abundance of caution" in his words. I have been through the process previously, and have friends who are attorneys. Therefore, due to the fact that things were very amicable, I did not feel "an abundance of caution" was necessary. The response I received was incredibly unprofessional and condescending. I could not believe that someone in his position, who deals with individuals in delicate, emotional situations daily, would speak to a client in such a manner. He browbeat me with motions passed as to how he had the right to proceed in my case how he wished, without informing me or discussing it with me. Essentially, how he had the right to spend my money how he chose, and then ask for more of course. He may be the attorney for someone with deep pockets, who doesn't mind being insulted during a sensitive time, but not for me.

If you are in the need of the professional services of an attorney. The key to finding the right legal representation, it seems to me, is finding a person that is both expertly qualified in the field of law that is the core of your legal issue, and that you can connect with personally. A person you are going to feel comfortable with at not just from a legal perspective, but also comfortable at a interpersonal level of communication as well. In my case after years of fighting with my HOA, I have finally gotten the full support of the local sheriff department. If this sounds at all like the kind of legal help that you are looking for, then. I most highly recommend Peter B. Goldstein Esq. Sincerely, Allan L. P Client

I recently went through a company called Marble Law. They assigned Tammy and her team as my representation. At first, they seemed very helpful and interested in helping with my case. After providing them all the information within minutes of their requests and receiving no notice of the information being received, I noticed they were not taking my case seriously. I would call for updates regularly. I would be given updates and timelines that never were met. Maybe it was just poor communication in her firm or maybe it was her team really had no idea what to tell me, so stories were made up to keep me hoping something was going to move forward. When I did call to confront them about what was going on and that the level of communication and unprofessionalism was unacceptable, she immediately sent me an email stating "I understand that you are not pleased with the services you have received from this office. I apologize for the delay and believe it may be best to set you up with another counsel from Marble. You should hear from them soon to arrange for a different counsel to assist you." No explanation on why there was a month-long delay for a simple motion for Contempt of Court to be drawn up and sent for my review, just a sorry and basically I'll pawn you off to Marble and let them deal with it. I strongly do not recommend this attorney or team if you are looking for a responsive and motivated group in any case.

Hiring Randy was a complete waste of time, like flushing money down the drain. It was a simple case about my government 401k and retirement. After 8 months of 1 hearing and continuous status hearings I fired randy and hired another attorney. During my 1 hour consultation the new attorney did more in 1 hour then Randy did in 8 months. The next status meeting an agreement was reached and settled. Randy had even forgotten that during the first hearing the judge rewarded me with 8 months of back pay maintenance only because the opposing attorney had asked me a question. It had nothing to do with randy. On my last hearing with Randy he was yelling and belligerent with the judge. The judge scolded him and at that point I figured I was losing my case. on that hearing I had given Randy a check for 1,000.00 dollars two weeks later he was calling me asking me for the 1,000.00 dollar check. I told him I gave it to him, my wife checked our back account and he had cashed the check. I fired him shortly after that. After my new attorney notified him that he had been fired. He sent me a bill for another 1,600.00. That would have put me at or near10,000.00 for a simple court case. Please do not trust your money with him. He just care about himself.

I had a horrible experience with this lawyer and I was not the only one. My best friend hired her to help with a divorce. My friends' husband disappeared for over 5 years and showed up after he found out that he could make a profit since their house gained value. He only paid $ 2000 for a lawyer and received 50% of all assets after being gone and not paying any bills for over 5 years. My friend got the same 50% and paid Patricia 3 times more. I hired her and never went to her office to discuss my case. She filed my divorce forms online which cost little fees but she charged thousands of dollars for a phone call. She does not care about her clients. I fired her and had to pay a high charge to get rid of her services. She is extremely unprofessional.

You'll notice that her ratings have only gone downhill in the more recent years, and this is not a coincidence. She worked on a case for my father-in-law back in 2015 and was exceptional in the courtroom. Based on her past performance, I used her for my child custody support hearing in 2020 and a landlord dispute around the same time, and she was nowhere near the same level of prepaid or willing to argue my points in the courtroom (I honestly think she didn't prepare until the morning of and it showed). She just didn't have any fight in her and was more interested in compromises even in the face of significant evidence in my favor. She will not look at your case until the day of court and still ask you questions that you clearly explained to her in email and other communications that she can reread. Oh, but don't worry, she will charge you for everything you send her, even though she clearly won't even read it during that time. In my child custody hearing the day before court, she asked me to send her all the relevant messages between me and my ex. I already sent them a month prior, and I highlighted the details I thought were important. I was charged for emailing her the month prior because it is "communication," then I got charged again for the same when I resent her the same emails. After hiring this attorney, I am almost $10,000 in debt, and she gave my ex everything her attorney asked for in court and did not (DID NOT!) put up any fight or present my side. I left the courtroom feeling like my side was completely unheard. I was just shocked by the whole thing and found it unbelievable. For how much she charges, you can find a better attorney.

She is a nightmare, she is an alcoholic who is incompetent and plays ball with the opposing attorneys. She will not have your interest in mind only billing you as much as possible. I had to fire her and file a complaint with the Colorado attorneys board. She sat on my case till the last minute which made it impossible for an applet level attorney to enter to fix what she let go because of her personal bias against me. It resulted in me losing custody of my children. She shouldn't have licensure to practice. Stay far away

Attorneys are labeled as verbose, but Jeanne is able to cut to the chase to save you time and money. The cost fades in light of the value of all that she accomplished in my divorce. I had a spouse who wanted to create drama throughout the process; at one point of frustration I was told, “And don’t talk to your bulldog lawyer!” The team is seasoned and devoted in its roles and provide a consistent, calm and thorough process. My case was complicated, which included mediation and a consult with another attorney out of state. Jeanne is respected by colleagues in her field. Selling our home was necessary; the judge complimented her idea to use the proceeds for the sale to front load the amount of maintenance. If you can handle honesty about your case and are willing to do your part in the process, I highly recommend Jeanne!

So let me tell you something about my experience with Jeanne, and her staff. First off, I found them online, never even met her in person, as I am living in Washington. I didn't know what to expect, never been through a divorce. She let me know right up front, the worst case scenario, which I appreciated. She was always trying to get me to stop wasting my money, calling her, worrying about things I couldn't control. She was very thorough, and direct. The day that I met her in person, was the day of my final divorce hearing. I was expecting the worse, and hoping for the best. The way she takes control of the court room, AMAZING!!!!!! I actually felt bad for my ex wife having to be cross examined by Jeanne. If you want someone, who will tell you how it is, and will fight for you, JEANNE should be YOUR TOP CHOICE.....She went above and beyond, and was VERY successful regarding the outcome of the case. Thank you so very much Jeanne!!!! Sean

Avoid this person who is an uncaring attorney, and this is from my personal experience. I spent approximately 7,OOO dollars for NOTHING!!! Had to hire another attorney who was a professional, knowledgeable and empathetic attorney regarding a military divorce. Lesson learned!

Given my experience, John Tatlock, is an awful attorney. He was lazy and disengaged, combative with me when I advocated for myself, and brought no financial expertise, which is why I hired him in the first place. In hindsight and after review from a new firm it is clear that John as a shareholder is more interested in billing than representing. I am extremely disappointed that this quality of lawyer is acceptable in the Denver legal system. Steer Clear

John, represented me on my divorce case, where it was very litigious and complicated by the other party. He defended my with honor and saved me from some major expenses, we had to go to trial several times because of the other parties unwillingness to cooperate with the court orders, and on most of the issues was able to win many of the rulings in my favor. He is quite confident and represents his clients well in court and is very well prepared and ready to fight for what is right and just. He is also a very smart and compassionate family attorney who knows his stuff. He was always available on the phone/email and responded to my queries promptly. Above all, he is a great human being who genuinely cares for his clients. I felt I not only found an excellent attorney but a great friend as well.

I was very disappointed with the way that the Harris Law Firm handled my case. The firm was expensive, difficult to keep on task, and the attorneys rarely dedicated the needed time to handle important things that came up. In the weeks leading up to the final hearing, the firm personnel were increasingly difficult to reach and ultimately, with only three weeks prior to hearing, they filed a surprise, uncoordinated withdrawal. This threw the case into chaos and completely changed the hearing schedule, adding months to the process with much additional emotional and financial pain. I would not hire this firm again

I hired this guy and he told me he would be using one of his other new attorneys to do some of the grunt work to keep the costs down. He disappeared after that and no matter how often I requested he get involved I was stuck with the young, inexperienced attorney which ended up costing me a lot more money and frustration. It looks like he was on probation the same time I hired him which was never disclosed to me. Also, they billed my credit card several times without my permission even when I told them not to and that I preferred to write a check. I finally had to cancel my card since they were obviously keeping it on file somewhere without my permission.

Dave fought hard for me in a tough situation. I didn't do much to help him by not following the Court's Orders and not listening to his advice, but he didn't pull any punches and told me the cold, hard truth about the consequences. Because he was so honest about how my case would play out in court, I trusted his advice and things turned around. Can't say I got everything I wanted, but I can say I think I got everything I could.

Allan has guided me through a divorce and continues to guide me through child-custody agreements. Allan gives you the facts: he does not overpromise or underpromise in terms of what can be accomplished with the court. He is highly skilled at understanding situations and people. I highly recommend Allan to be your divorce/child custody advocate... He is always working for you, and he understands your situation.

I purchased representation of this law firm of Alexander and Ewart when I was referred to Mr. Ewart's partner, Brooke Alexander for my son's custody case. Mr Ewart on several occasions made decisions against what was told of him to make, made comments to opposing attorney that was contrary to the demands of my son throwing him under the bus on numerous occasions. When he was called out for these bad decisions and indiscretions, he would say he messed up but would then, on each occasion charge fees to explain himself via emails. The final straw was when he was told that his partner, Brooke Alexander would be the only one acceptable to conduct and represent my son in mediation. He would not reply nor acknowledge this demand and was terminated. This firm still owes back fees advanced and kept in trust of approximately $1500.

Langdon and his staff are hard working, experienced, skilled professionals. Throughout my lengthy divorce Langdon provided representation above and beyond my expectations. He is an excellent negotiator- organized and thorough. However, the other side forced us to trial. He's a top notch litigator. VERY, VERY good in the court room. I had complete confidence in him and felt secure knowing he was taking care of everything.

Yes. A third rate divorce lawyer can do great damage to your case… I can honestly say that Diane Kaiser is THE worst lawyer I’ve ever dealt with. I came to her, crying, asking for her help with a very difficult custody situation with my ex withholding parenting time for 2 years with my autistic child and instead of helping me, she took advantage of me, adding even more stress to my life. I think the worst part was, when I emailed her, it had been weeks, I was expecting to hear the details of my custody case settlement, hadn’t heard anything, then found out Diane had emailed my private legal documents to an unknown email address! She admitted she did this, then refused to contact this unknown person to destroy the documents, you know, how lawyers have a DUTY to protect your privacy? Nope. She wouldn’t do it. 2. In addition to all this other mess, after I hadn’t heard anything back on my custody case and had the audacity to ask, hey what happened? I get an ALL CAPS verbally abusive email from her. Talk about lack of respect for your client. This was par for the the course from the beginning, being disrespected and then even blamed for HER mistakes. She never took accountability for any of her mistakes, nor did she refund any money for billing countless hours for reading documents, then bailing on my financial case. How is this ok? Who’s working for who here? 3. Prior to that, Diane and her decades-long employed paralegal, were not up to par on technology, Dropbox. I had to coach her paralegal to help set it up for me. (I was billed for this too) I uploaded all my documents to get her up to speed on my case. Two months later, I met with her, Diane actually pretended that she had read the documents. I was suspicious and pinned her down. Turns out she hadn’t read them. She admitted to me that she hadn’t. I asked her to call her paralegal and the paralegal said she had been trying to print out an audio file? Unbelievable. She even blamed ME for not reading the documents. This was very egregious. I begrudgingly gave her a second chance, as I was potentially about a month away from going to court. Lucky for me, my case settled, due to my own diligence. Believe me, I would not have wanted to go to court with this charlatan! 4. I also hired her to handle an outstanding financial issue, she supposedly FINALLY actually read my documents a month later, she billed me for countless hours on this financial issue, but then after the custody issue settled, she announced that she was not going to do her due diligence to follow through with resolving this issue! She bailed, withdrew.

While Ms. Kaiser is honest and fair in price, she does not listen very well. My experience with her office was frustrating, as I would have to ask more than once to have anything done right, as if we we never quite speaking the same language. Also, she would become argumentative very easily, so that I felt I had to watch what I said. Only later did I realize the I was the employer in this relationship. If I could do it over again, I would find an attorney who listened. Perhaps then the court would have heard my issues, instead of the issues Ms. Kaiser thought they should hear.

This person is definitely biased. She is a Magistrate with Adams County Court and she has dismissed a Motion ordered by another judge. She didn't even have time to read our 2 volume court file before making a decision. She definitely needs to find a different profession. Making working for the Mafia would be a better fit for her.

Had a consult at K&G with Jennifer. She was straight forward, nice, seemed understanding, and answered all my questions quickly. I was concerned that she was very young and had just recently graduated law school. As my case would likely be quite entailed, I simply didn't feel comfortable with someone so new representing me. My other concern was the office environment. I was greeted in the lobby by two dogs. One was massive. I want to say it was a Great Dane. The receptionist was no where to be found but I did hear laughter and people joking in one of the offices. When the receptionist did appear, I was a little taken back that jeans and a shirt were appropriate office attire. Jennifer was dressed similarly and had several visible tattoos. Again she was nice but had a less than professional appearance. While I understand this is a very small firm with only two full time attorneys, I simply didn't feel comfortable paying a couple hundred an hour for their services.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
