I was referred to Joe and Jon Vander Horst from a friend. I cannot express my gratitude enough for the outstanding job the Vander Horst team provided. Their team was concise, professional and extremely knowledgeable. All phone messages were promptly returned and addressed. I also feel their fee structure was very fair and competitive. I would never hesitate to hire Joe Vander Horst and his team for future legal representation. I highly recommend the Vander Horst Law firm to anyone seeking the very best in legal representation.

I had the same problem as others mentioned in their reviews. Minor things were negotiated fine but the major issues, he refused to address or fight for me. I asked numerous times about specific issues and he was focused on settling without having to go to court. I said I was willing to and wanted to fight for them and he refused. He told me at my consultation that he would do what is best for me and would fight if needed. That was not the case and I felt like he didn’t want to be bothered by anything there was a disagreement over. I feel like he was more of a benefit to my ex-husband than he was to me and my kids. I hired him because of positive reviews as others have stated. Just a warning to consider all reviews before hiring him.

Denise is without a doubt, the greatest attorney I have ever had the privilege to have on my side. She is very knowledgeable, thorough, extremely professional, respectful and compassionate. She lead me step by step through my divorce and fought for me when I couldn’t fight for myself. She treated me like a friend, not like another client. I’m extremely satisfied with the outcome of my case and with my overall experience with Denise. I highly recommend her for any type of legal battle!

I hired Mr. Wallach to assist me with an employment matter. At first I was trying to handle it by myself and was getting absolutely nowhere. Every attorney I spoke with either would not return my calls, or requested I sent them a ridiculous retainer fee. Thus, I tried to handle the case myself and was getting nowhere with the other party. Meaning nobody would even return my calls/emails! From the very first contact with Mr. Wallach he gave me confidence and advised this matter was not complicated and only asked me to send him a fraction of what the other attorneys were requesting. I appreciated that very much as I have three children and do not have a lot of money. Also, since I was being sued by my former employer they were keeping my severance pay, so really I had no money to give. Mr. Wallach assured me he could handle the case, and literally five minutes after hanging up with him I finally received communication back from my former employer. However, by then I did not have to do anything. The process was Mr. Wallach would contact me and walk me through everything, he would ask if I had any questions and what my requests were. He would then contact the other party and handle everything. He even was able to save my new job when they also received a court order from my former employer by talking with the other attorney and getting him to agree to call the HR of the new employer on my behalf! Now that is one hell of an attorney! I am forever grateful to Mr. Wallach for saving my career and my family financially for that matter. I would 1000% refer anyone needing representation over to Mr. Wallach as he is by far the most honest attorney I have ever dealt with. He even called me a week or so later, after we were done with the case, just to see how things turned out and how I was doing. I have much respect for Mr. Wallach and am forever grateful and thankful that he was the attorney to represent me. Thank you Mr. Wallach your are a rare breed, and it is appreciated very much!

He listened to the questions I had, helped me to find a focus on what I wanted out of the situation, and proceeded to help by being quick to respond to both my and my ex-spouse's attorney. I picked this lawyer to handle my family's estate issues. She took my substantial deposit and it's been almost 2 years with no resolution and terrible communication. Whenever I would call or email I couldn't even get a response! I had to hire a new lawyer, and she took 80% of my retainer. My new lawyer had to schedule an appointment through her website because she wouldn't answer his emails or calls either. When I asked for my retainer back she tacked on a relentless amount of "fees" so now I'm paying even more money. BEWARE!

Zachary Kemp is NOT the lawyer you want to represent you. We hired Zachary Kemp and paid a $5000 retainer which included all court appearances. Kemp was more than happy to take that money and do minimal to no work proceeding all the way up to trial. Kemp then took a position with another firm, leaving his own firm named after him, emailing his client. Not calling, not setting up a meeting whether in person or on zoom, but emailing to say he intends to drop the case just before trial. This is not someone who is looking to represent you, it’s not someone who has your best interest in mind. This is a lawyer who is in it to squeeze every dollar he can while taking the path of least resistance just to get out.

First, I have to say there are not enough words to express what Mr. Vitale and his firm did for not just myself but, for my children. Both He and his staff are heaven sent, in my and my children's eyes. I consulted with Vitale and associates in late 2017 regarding my child custody case, this was an out of state case brought to MI and had already been litigated on for almost 3 years. 3 years of motions, in and out of courtrooms, being lied to by counsel, you name it, it probably had gone wrong in my case up until that point. Mr. Vitale could have easily felt like it was a lot to jump into, especially with no prior knowledge of the 3 year case. Instead, Mr. Vitale didn't hesitate to jump in and begin unraveling the knot my case had become. I am more than happy to say, he is REALLY GREAT at what he does and while my case is still being somewhat litigated, I will never have another attorney represent me and my children other than Mr. Vitale. If you are looking for an honest, dedicated, ethical and highly knowledgable attorney to represent you, no matter the situation, then you should contact Vitale and Associates! The bond I formed with not only Mr. Vitale but the entire team is a bond that will last a lifetime, as will the memories my children and I are now able to freely make on our own. Something that would not have been possible without Mr. Vitale and his amazing associates. They treat you like a part of their family and actually care about the best possible outcome for you, no matter what! Thank you Mr. Vitale and Maggie, I'd give you both a billion star reviews if I was able to! Amanda Hoffman-Thompson

I had the displeasure of dealing with Lisa Litton. I was the Plaintiff acting in Pro Se (as my own attorney). She defended the person I was suing. I highly recommend you record any private communication with her. When the Judge asked us to try to settle I gave her my terms and she lied to two judges about what the term was in order to not make her client look like a fool for not taking the deal. Two judges? After I filed my civil suit against her client months later she filed a defamation suit against me because her client didn't like I was saying she stole from me and broke our contract. In the defamation suit Litton twisted the facts and did not include the document that would have refuted her claim. She also was supposed to submit the initial disclosures 14 days after my answer and didn't submit them for almost two months. Litton sent me an email on a Friday night telling me we had paperwork to submit to the judge by the following Tuesday and I better get it to her by Monday at 3 pm. I had spent all weekend away from my family researching to understand how to respond to the paperwork. She knew this paperwork needed to be submitted for over two months and waited until the last minute. During my deposition she stuttered and was confused and didn't know how to respond to my answers against her client. In court she showed cowardace when she failed to take responsibility for not filing the dismissal when the Judge told her to. Instead she allowed me to take the blame. Email communications with her were condescending, harassing and accusatory. And when she missed a deadline to respond to my motion requesting discovery evidence, she gave me the evidence and claimed to do it under "the spirit of cooperation." I have delt with unethical attorneys in the past, both killed themselves. This woman is in the same class.

I brought an ongoing case which already had a show cause hearing scheduled to show cause why my husband was not giving me my visitation! I paid to have this set and told them time was of the essence! After agreeing to be there they called the court and the other attorney and cancelled it the day before! When I said they had no right she laughed and said as my new attorney she could do anything without my consent. I complained about both of them to the Michigan Attorney Grievance! Others had complained too! Welch got his licensed suspended for 6 months's and had to return my retainer and 6 others! I believe neither should be attorneys!

My experience has been the worst. She never contacts you. If there is ever an emergency...forget trying to get a hold of her. But when she needs something oh you better contact her. Very unprofessional and unfair in everyway. I would never recommend her to anyone even my worst enemy. Everything is on HER TIME.

Garwood was more concerned with making money and lengthy drawn out court proceedings than the well being of the family. The case should have been within a year, however Garwood drew out the process making the legal and time expenses extremely high.

I've been with Tammy for nearly three years in high-conflict divorce and custody issues. In my opinion she is one of the best out there. She is caring and honest but when the chips are down she is willing to fight for her client's rights.

My husband hired Judith Hearn in our divorce. It has been a fiasco from the start. Missing or last minute documents, documents scanned illegible, doesn't know the law, rude, does not make time or return calls once she has your $. We have had 3 mediations and now a waiting for 3rd court date for what should have been a very simple divorce, no kids...no big $. Just does everything she can to drive up her fee. Btw...my attorney said she had a stroke a few years ago. She's never been right since. Just stocking up funds for retirement. Stay away...I am out 10 grand and she's my opposing council. She's horrible.

Do not recommend this attorney. Hired her for a divorce with child. She told me steps to take, then turned around and acted like I was doing all the wrong things. Was rude over the phone and through email, and fine in person. Told her exactly what I wanted and she seemed to do her own thing regarding the custody and parenting of my child. Couldn't seem to keep facts straight. Not dependable in my opinion. Makes you feel like you are in it alone..

She made promises that she did not follow through with. She told me her retainer was 1500 and charged 2500 on my cc then said she couldn't remember quoting me 1500. Took her 6 weeks to serve divorce papers on my x. She had no time for me and did absolutely nothing when my x lied in court. She completely ruined my life.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
