I was immensely grateful to have Shannon Polley represent a loved one who was at risk of 2+ years, minimum, of prison for unlawful possession of a firearm. She advocated for his truth with unwavering dedication, a wealth of knowledge, and genuine warmth. Her composure and sharp intellect instilled a deep sense of confidence and trust from beginning to end. Shannon possesses the unique ability to connect with clients on a personal level, making you feel supported, respected and truly heard throughout the entire process. Her ability to adapt and act with precision amidst trial gave us the peace of mind we needed during an extremely stressful experience. I recommend her with high regards if you are looking for a defense lawyer who will go above and beyond, she is a relentless advocate for her clients and was an absolutely powerful force in the court room.

Exceptional dedication and care, knowledge and experience. Erica was able to get me the impossible 10 years ago - full custody of my 5 year old daughter after I divorced an abuser. She was the first one to tell me my circumstances will unlikely yield a full custody, I replied I HAD too. We got full custody and a 5 years DVPO, Erica did it! Last November after 6 months of harassment , treats and coercive control , I found myself in court again to ask for another DVPO protecting my daughter and I from the same man, her “ father “. She told me to hold off for a few months before she knew it worth spending the money on representation. Once we got there , she told me and once again, she got us another DVPO. Erica has a heart for her clients, she made the difference in the life I and my daughter have. I am forever thankful and have recommended her more than I have recommended contractors ( I am a real estate broker :) all my friends know her by name! Isabelle Dowling

Knauf Santos Law counseled me through a difficult process of renegotiating a parenting plan and child support agreement with my children’s father. Erica was incredibly helpful answering all my questions and providing solid advice with the utmost professionalism, legal expertise, and compassion during a very difficult time for me. Her advice was critical in helping me make the right legal choices and I got the desired outcomes I had hoped for! I have always felt that she has my best interest and the interest of my kids in mind. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for legal counsel!

Monica was my champion when I couldn’t always see through the manipulation of the abuse cycle I was stuck in. She helped us escape and fought for my kids and I. I highly recommend Monica for anyone going through a difficult divorce especially when it comes to the safety of your children. We are now thriving and safe. In your darkest hours it doesn’t feel like there is a light. Monica is that light that gets you to the other side.

Monica was my counsel in a custody/support with a few complications and issues. There were a lot of different ways we could go with things, but I always felt Monica was thoughtful and laid out the possibilities and likely outcomes clearly to me. Even if we disagreed on a course of action, she was open with me on her feelings and opinions, and even felt comfortable enough to allow me to get a second opinion with no judgement. From that I learned that she has the great respect of her peers, which I found reassuring. She was usually quick to respond to all my inquires, and I appreciated that it felt like she was thoughtful of my time and billed hours.

I have been working with Scott for over a year now in my ongoing family court dealings. Scott was the first lawyer I have worked with that thoroughly impressed me with his communication skills. In my previous experiences, I rarely ever heard from my lawyer themselves, but Scott has always made it very clear that he is 100% there for me throughout the whole process and to answer any questions I may have. Scott truly listens to my concerns and addresses each one without skipping a beat. He is very professional and comes to court hearings fully prepare - which gives me the full confidence needed when going into things. It can be stressful looking for a lawyer that you can trust with your very important case, so take my word when I say it - you can stop looking and fully put your trust into Scott. Thank you Scott for all you have done for me and my family - HIGHLY recommended.

I originally hired Sean because a plumbing company had caused structural damages to floor joists during a renovation and they would not accept responsibility. What happened instead was Sean transferred me to Joe and the lawsuit lasted 2 1/2 years. We ended up going to arbitration and I won all damages but zero lawyers fees. Incredibly frustrating experience. I wouldn’t hire nor recommend them. I regret hiring Sean and Joe.

I worked with Will Reingold, Jr for my divorce, who was recommended to me by a friend. He was friendly and knowledgeable for a process that is painful for most. The guy always works and never seems to miss a beat. He is always on top of it and prioritizes to get things done/executed like you're his only client. He made efforts to resolve more complicated challenges like parental rights of embryos even though it's not his wheelhouse.

This was the first time I have ever had to hire an attorney. I found Matthew through a bar association referral (having no idea where to look otherwise). Turns out to be a good match. We did an initial consultation in late April. He was mindful of the facts of my case, able to recall them between many different calls over six months. I appreciate that Matthew was conservative with my finances. He billed appropriately, and advised on whether or not one decision or another that I was making would be a wise use of the retainer I paid. Essentially telling me "yes you *could* do that, but it won't get any results and you'll be wasting your money." Although the ultimate outcome of the situation was not exactly what I had hoped for, he was able to negotiate my contract and able to negotiate for severance pay.

Ms. Hunter is a well-connected (i.e. resourceful) attorney, old-schooled (think RBG, kind, balanced approach to law), thorough, transparent, and timely. My one advice for prospective clients is while you should make your own choices, listen and weigh carefully to what she advises — as she will present the law you as it will possibly be.

After interviewing a number of lawyers for my divorce I chose Jason for his directness and honesty about the situation. Throughout the divorce process, the opposing attorneys tried to introduce external issues irrelevant to the divorce in an effort to prejudice the court against me. Jason made sure only relevant issues were considered, and we came out ahead every time Jason worked hard to get an equitable settlement, working with the mediator to toss out ridiculous requests from the opposing party, and come to a reasonable agreement. I always felt Jason had my best interests in every discussion with the opposition, and set my expectations appropriately even if the outcome might not be favorable to me. Thank you Jason!

5/5 Absolutely the best in the personal/professional injury attorney business. If you are looking for a diligent, hard working legal team to advocate for you, the Ye Law Firm in Federal Way is the premier choice. Being in a workplace injury accident is scary but since the moment I first retained the Ye law firm, I haven't had to worry about anything. Their recommendations and tireless work lead to a much larger settlement than I was anticipating. I had a complicated workplace / personal injury case and they have graciously guided and advised me throughout the entire process. From the day after my accident to taking care of tiny details after the settlement, Jackie and the team have literally handled everything for me with such professionalism and meticulous attention to detail. From tracking down police reports, to dealing with L&I, handling medical billing, dealing with all the insurance companies, and ensuring that my treatment was entirely taken care of, the Ye law firm has been with me every step of the way making sure that I would be 100% taken care of and made whole again. My advice to you if you have been in an injury situation: Hire the Ye Law Firm, be absolutely thorough in your treatment, and then be patient afterwards to let them play out all the back and forth legal work and find every little loophole, waiver, and tactic to add on to your settlement. Thank you so much, Jackie and team at the Ye Law Firm. I am so humbly grateful for your services and I will be recommending you to anyone that is need of an injury attorney in the future.

Des Kolke, Helped me with my divorce. Des was very relaxed and confident about my case. During a very difficult time he was like a quarterback in the Super Bowl when you are down by 5 points with 55 seconds to go in the game and you need a touchdown to win. His expertise and confidence really shined through during the mediation hearing. I have to admit I was not optimistic about my case being settled and i was bracing myself for a trial date. God, Des and Hanna orchestrated an incredible drive to Win the game. Because of his knowledge, confidence and sheer grit I am a free man today. Avoid William Ball, unless you're looking for a milquetoast middleman who masquerades as a lawyer. I had the misfortunate of hiring him from Beaty Hatch during my dissolution. I went in the assumption that he was going to fight for me and resolve the dissolution in a timely fashion. That is all I asked for in our initial meeting, regardless of the outcome. After just two months, I was so baffled by his unresponsiveness and lack of interest in the case (he'd routinely take days or weeks to reply to even simple questions, if he'd respond at all) that I asked him what additional compensation would incentivize him, to which his secretary replied that she would print out my last email for him. Imagine hiring a lawyer for 300 USD / hr who is so disorganized that he can't even keep track of client emails and needs a secretary to hold his hand. Well, you don't need to imagine. You can just hire William Ball. As time went on, who the lawyer was between us become increasingly blurred. Numerous emails to the judge and opposing counsel were just him forwarding text I wrote with his name attached. Here are more instances of poor work on his part that I'd like to highlight. 1. Before the first "mediation" session with the opposing counsel in mid-April, I had made it extremely clear that I wanted to resolve the dissolution as quickly as possible. By that point, opposing counsel had two months to prepare. So what does Mr. Ball do just a week before mediation? He agrees with the opposing counsel to push it out two more weeks, so she can prepare more! I immediately emailed him asking why on earth he would do that, to which he basically replied, "oops, too late." 2. Mr. Ball failed to inform me that I was allowed to hire my own business valuator to valuate my LLC. I only found out later because another lawyer told me. Considering that this valuator's work contained factual errors and bad analysis, this kind of information would have been incredibly useful. Another lawyer reviewed Mr. Ball's work shortly after I fired him. Upon learning about his failure to recommend our own valuator, the other lawyer commented, "[This] seems UNBELIEVABLE and incredibly negligent." 3. During the second "mediation" session, Mr. Ball was given an opportunity to question the valuator's work. His efforts were nothing short of embarrassing. Instead of homing in numerous lines of evidence indicating that she had put little effort to her analysis or had relied on problematic assumptions, he spent forty minutes tossing her softball questions that did nothing to bring into question the credibility of her valuation. 4. The verdict of the "equalization" provided by the arbitrator included false information about statements made during "mediation". What did Mr. Ball do in response? Absolutely nothing. Not a peep of protest, despite acknowledging that the arbitrator's decision contained factual errors. I was dumbfounded. At that point, the reality sank in that I was just another case he could cram into his schedule and extract money from. I had spent months thinking, "OK, soon he's going start fighting. He's just waiting for the right moment to pounce." Nope. By the time I realized I had been had, it was too late. The total amount I had to pay this firm for such low quality work is nothing short of horrifying. I gave a long list of grievances regarding his performance. His equally unprofessional manager, Valerie Nack, responded to with a cheeky claim that I'm merely disappointed by the outcome of the dissolution. No, let's not mince words: even if I had "won" (if such a thing can even happen in divorce), Mr. Ball is still incompetent. The outcome was unjust, even by Mr. Ball's own admission, but that is the arbitrator's fault, not Mr. Ball's fault. Mr. Ball was asked to perform a job with a certain level of quality and professionalism and he failed to do it. Not once have this firm offered any sort of apology. Not once was I offered a refund of any kind. Instead, they chose to harass me with collections.

I cannot recommend Hannah Gurewitz highly enough. From the very beginning, she demonstrated excellent knowledge and dedication to my case. Hannah took the time to explain every step of the process in a simple way, ensuring I understood my options and what to expect. She, and her assistant Kristen always responded swiftly to my questions, even when she is busy in a mediation or in court, she would let me know that she received my email or massage and that she will get back to me once she is done, sometimes after office regular hours. Hannah was committed, leaving no detail overlooked. She understood the stress that I had and knew how to deal with it. Thanks to Hannah’s hard work, my case was resolved successfully. I will definitely turn to her for any legal need in the future.

I’d recommend ensuring that your staff.. whether a secretary, paralegal, or receptionist... has a clear understanding of basic client-facing information. Prospective clients should be able to quickly obtain answers to foundational questions such as: 1. Consultation Fees: Whether the firm charges for an initial consultation and, if so, the amount. 2. Billing Structure: Whether services are billed on a flat fee, hourly rate, or incrementally 3. Retainer Amount: The cost to retain the attorney’s services and the terms of the retainer agreement. Equipping your staff with this knowledge fosters efficiency, professionalism, and client trust. A well-prepared team ensures potential clients feel valued and confident in their initial interaction with your firm.

I had a great experience working with Jane Clark's firm. My attorney, Josh, was very helpful and quick to respond throughout the entire process. Most importantly, we felt comfortable working with their team. They were very thorough and helped my husband and I understand each part of the legal process. They truly are experts in medical malpractice law. I would absolutely recommend their firm to anyone considering a medical malpractice lawsuit. They are not only extremely professional but they are friendly, kind, and a pleasure to work with.

Margaret and her paralegal are either sick. Their family is sick or they are out of time for long periods of time. They both have random phone numbers that they call you with one of them always says unknown. They want to meet with you for four hours at time to review things that have already been discussed at meetings prior. I have not had one invoice from Margaret Fitzpatrick that states where my $10,000 went. When I asked for an invoice, she said that they always send them on the first of the month. Why couldn’t she just send me an invoice at that time? Scary. I have been scammed. I received notice from my ex-husband‘s attorney that she is not representing me. I’ve tried to contact all of the telephone numbers that I have that came from Margaret or her paralegal. I have not received any response though she is my acting attorney for the next 13 days. I called their office and I was hung up on.. I placed a review not less than five minutes ago and it was taken off. I am definitely going to be seeking legal retribution and keep my review posted even if I have to continue to post it every two minutes. They claimed they have clear communication and empathy to relieve your fears and anxiety on their website, but that is the complete opposite from the truth. I beg you do not go here. You will be told to do a whole bunch of things that traditionally are needed but when you send these items via email, they will come back and say to you, they did not receive them. Margaret typically will say she did not receive them because her paralegal is sick. I was on the phone for three hours, explaining that I had already sent all the information she was saying I did not send. I resent the emails that I sent her while we were on the phone. When I looked back at my emails, they were proved to have been sent to her originally. I have all of my emails still and every single message from this office stating my facts above to be true. I hope you read this for your mental and physical health. Do not go here!!

I want to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for David Braswell and everything he has done for me. After being turned away by more than six firms, I was feeling frustrated and out of options—until I connected with David. David’s diligence, expertise, and integrity truly set him apart. He not only took on my case but also took the time to listen, guide, and advocate for me every step of the way. His deep knowledge of the law, combined with his fairness and transparency, gave me confidence throughout the process. I always felt like I had someone in my corner, fighting for the best possible outcome without unnecessary costs or complications. I can’t thank David enough for his dedication and support. September 12th, 2022 police arrived at my door to tell me they were investigating sexual claims made against me, outlandish as they were I immediately panicked because as everyone knows, once these rise against you, you’re pretty much screwed. I immediately reached out to any attorney and was recommended Vindicate law, I spoke to the receptionist and explained the case and was assigned Carrie Fulton Brown. She accepted my case. The path to freedom was long and arduous. After the arraignment they told me I was facing 60 years in prison. Many continuations later, my anxiety and stress were at an all time high. Me and Carrie never really talked to each other about the case itself except a few times as my case was entirely hearsay, but because of the fact that it was from a minor the case was stacked against me 10 fold. Communication with Carrie was very rough, as most people sitting in the hot seat just want a shred or a glimmer of positivity but Carrie did NOT deliver on that front in the slightest. But that was okay, because she was dedicated to working against the state in a screwed up system. Most of the beginning of my case I knew most people and even Carrie didn’t believe me when I say I didn’t do it. Later on I passed 3 polygraph tests trying to prove I didn’t do it, and only after the 3rd one when I passed it with the actual prosecutor / State did Carrie tell me she strongly believes I didn’t do it. She gave me the best options to follow forward and going to trial with a minors words against mine was bleak, Carrie fought for the best outcome, I served 0 days in jail, no fees or Fines, Didn’t have to sign a sexual registry, all 4 counts were dropped to a Class C Abuse of a child. And 1 year of DOC Probation in which I spent 3 weeks on before the DOC discharged me from probation saying my crime didn’t fit criteria of having probation as I was a zero risk person and this was the only thing I’ve ever gotten on my record. All said and done, I’m glad Carrie pulled through for me and allowed me to stay out of prison and remain with my family and to continue working she’s a tough person to understand and rough around the edges when talking to her but she’s nothing but business which is what you want in an attorney. Thanks Carrie for giving me my life back! 60 years was a long time to be away.

I am absolutely appalled by the complete lack of professionalism and utter disregard for my situation shown by Carrie Fulton Brown from this Law Group. I entrusted her with my case, believing her promises of dedicated representation, and instead, I received nothing but empty words and an empty bank account. She happily accepted my retainer, and then proceeded to do absolutely nothing. During the 6 months period she was my attorney, before her withdrawal, phone calls went unanswered, meetings/appointments were canceled for no apparent reasons. No investigations were done on my case, she did not interview no witnesses, and the so called ”victim“. Furthermore, Carrie had the audacity to tell me I was borderline harassing her by calling her and her incompetent paralegal Lisa too much. She literally took my money and vanished into thin air. Carrie Fulton Brown is a trash of attorney. I suffered significantly due to her inaction, and I was left feeling completely abandoned and betrayed. I would strongly advise anyone considering hiring her to look elsewhere. Save your money, save your time, and save yourself the immense frustration and disappointment. She is a disgrace to the legal profession.

Anyone facing divorce knows the financial and emotional upheaval that is about to descend on your life. Finding a competent lawyer to guide you through the divorce process can be a daunting task and I found such a lawyer: Sarah Brandon from North Country Law Office. Sarah's calm, empathetic demeanor was a great support during the entire divorce proceedings. She always consistently steered me in the right direction to ensure the best possible outcome. Sarah’s advice on two separate occasions prevented me from taking actions that would have further complicated resolving an already emotionally-charged divorce. Sarah is a firm, tough negotiator and with her many years of practicing family law, she has acquired exceptional expertise in divorce law. Her superior understanding of the law resulted in a settlement that will enable me to live a financially-secure post-divorce life. What was impressive is she held down legal fees by avoiding expensive litigation. Regarding Sarah's fees, her retainer and other expenses were reasonable. She called and emailed only when it was necessary. Sarah didn't play the all-to-common legal game of driving up legal expenses with unnecessary legal maneuvers. She is honest, ethical and I would highly recommend Sarah to handle any divorce, from the simple to the complex. Sarah is the owner of the law firm. Her office staff of Liz, Tasha and Katie understand how difficult divorce can be and they more than once put me at ease with their lighthearted sense of humor and kindness. The professional and personable services this firm provided made the rocky road of divorce easier. Finally, I had the utmost confidence in being represented by a law firm owned and staffed entirely with women. My confidence was not misplaced as my ability to live a financially-secure life is due entirely to this firm. Thank you, Sarah, Katie, Tasha and Liz for your hard work and dedication.

Gwynna helped me successfully mediate a divorce. I was given her name by my financial planner, as Gwynna has successfully helped high income people through a messy process. She engaged a forensic accountant, helping me trace a lot of assets as separate property. Well worth it! Really prompt communication on the status of the case. I wasn't always happy with the speed of the process but that's primarily because the other party hired a dork and things get worked in the order they are needed. Cory is an amazing member of her team. I knew if I found an error in one of his documents, I was batting 1000.

I found Gwynna through other reviews. I met with her for a complimentary personal meeting. I came prepared with questions and some paperwork. She was very up front with me about what would be realistic in my situation and how she could help. After our meeting I felt confident that she was the right person to represent me. Divorce is HARD no matter what the circumstances are (or are not). I had my ideas of how it would all pan out....but my way was not all the "right way". Gwynna was very much on my side, to be there to support me, guide me and calm me down when I felt like I was going to lose my mind! She was up front and very honest. Supported me, but also helped me understand how the court system (and judges see things) so that we could make this the best outcome for me. I do have 2 young adult girls, so there was no decisions to be made with child support. But we did figure out fair amounts to be paid towards college. It was a LOT of work (on my side and hers). I trusted her, she VERY MUCH knows the system and how things work. She was able to handle my husbands narcissist personality and was great at adapting to the 2 lawyers my husband had through out the process. I can definitely say that she took care of me throught this 10 month process, explaining things to me, working with me through the bad and good, got me through mediation (instead of court) with a good outcome, and really showed empathy and compassion. I highly recommend her to anyone going through a divorce!

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
