Leigh was excellent. I believe many people expect a hand holding. Although Leigh's compassion may be her weakness, it is the most important trait of a criminal defense attorney. Many defense attorneys treat your case as "another day at work". Not Leigh, your case is individual and needs that kind of attention. It matters to her so that kind of attention is provided from her.

Leigh Gonnet was absolutely amazing. She got my DWI dismissed without any probation. I simply had to take a few classes and do community service. She believed in my case and cared about my rights. Was always sweet and considerate. She responded to missed calls quickly and kept me well informed through out the process.

Okay folks. After being audited by the Texas Comptroller and them creating a tax bill of $175,000, I hired Curtis Osterlo to defend me. Long story short, I recorded all of the conversations between Mr. Osterlo and myself. In the beginning, he mentioned the names of people at the Comptroller NOT to talk to. Two months later, while racking up legal fees, he suggested he would circle back around and speak to Jane Doe (one of the people NOT to talk to). That is when I fired him. In my opinion, this law firm is in bed with the Comptroller to generate legal fees. After firing Curtis, I handled my case myself. The comptroller didn't know what to do now? Their boy wonder was out. I proved to the Comptroller I didn't owe the money by emailing a copy of the Federal and State laws. I ended up winning without Curtis. He wanted me to settle and charge me $35,000 for his time. I will never do business in the state of Texas again!

I had an outstanding warrant for DWI probation violation. I thought it was going to be Hell getting it resolved, but this law firm resolved it quickly. Now I'm warrant free and able to move on. I would recommend this firm to anyone dealing with any type of DWI issue. I would give this law firm six stars if it were an option.

I wish I had known a thing or two about hiring an attorney before I caught my case so that I could have known to avoid this man. He did nothing for my case, besides delaying the process, after taking my money. Nothing happened with my case for almost a year-and-a-half and in that time I heard virtually nothing from Stephen. He was two hours late for my last court appointment where I was offered the deal for probation, which I ended up taking. Hiring him was a complete waste of money. I would have been better off just dealing with the prosecutor on my own. I probably would have gotten the same deal without having to pay $3500 to an attorney who did nothing. He didn't even advise me to take the standard DWI/AOD classes offered by Travis County, or an IOP class, which not only would have helped my case, but which ended up being conditions of my probation anyway. He briefly mentioned the MADD panel during one of the two or three conversations I had with him in total. And I'm the one that set that meeting up, because I wanted to get more information, not because he was trying to guide me through the process as a good attorney should. I ended up taking the offer for 18 months probation, because I had absolutely no faith in Stephen's ability to take my case to trial. Probation has been an absolute nightmare. I have wasted thousands of dollars getting put through the private-interest-run racket that is community supervision. Not only has it drained my bank account, probation has completely ruined these last 18 months of my life and nearly driven me insane. It is humiliating, degrading, and dehumanizing. I have been surprise arrested while showing up to one of my monthly meetings, because I accidentally missed a court date. As a result, I had to spend two days in jail and another $1500 to get out. In that time, I missed two exams and some important assignments for school and ended up having to drop out of my engineering program at UT because of this disaster. In conclusion, I just want to say this: DO NOT HIRE THIS MAN. Unless your case is already a slam dunk for any attorney, he will not be able to help you. Do your research and hire someone that will actually take an active interest and put in the work to help your case. Because Stephen did none of that for me and my case.

This is either a very convincing internet scam, or John is a very poor lawyer. After paying his invoice I have essentially lost contact. I went to the littlefield building listed as his office online and could not find any record of Coonley law from the folks I talked to. Please choose another firm at all costs. UPDATE: after asking for a refund, John finally had the time of day to speak with me. He agreed to give me a refund for some LLC filing fees I had paid him. (He never got the filing completed). I have since been trying to follow up and actually receive said refund for over 3 weeks now, but still have had no luck. This man is an absolute scumbag and a joke of an attorney. How he is able to practice law is a crime itself. I leave this review in hopes that nobody else ever has to deal with a crook like John like I did.

I was referred to Lisa after endlessly pulling my hair out trying to find an attorney who would deal with me with compassion and understanding. As a father who had repeatedly been denied visitation, yet who was not without fault of his own (I got behind on child support due to a number of financial setbacks), Lisa not only took my case, but did so with vigor and reassurance. She set me at ease, then got down to the business of righting the ship with my family. She is obviously well-respected and experienced. This woman is just plain awesome. Thank you Lisa!

Wow! I couldn't have expected this outcome. I received a charge for a DWI. Betty was referred to me by a former member of the Attorney General's office. He gave me 5 names that he said he would use if he needed these or other services. I interviewed them and hands down, she was the most professional and was clearly interested in helping me and not bragging about her wins. Of the 5, she was in the middle of the price range which also was a good sign to me. Simply, Betty was able to get my case dismissed and will be able to get it expunged from my record. I was told over and over that it's very difficult these days to get these cases dismissed. She went above and beyond in her availability to talk at most any time and her detailed explanations to educate me. Not only did Betty work through Covid to keep me informed by email and via mail with hard copies, she drove the prosecuting attorney to speed up the reviews and in record time. It's worth noting that she said that I did everything she asked timely. I took some classes voluntarily and completed the necessary evaluations. You'll want to do whatever she recommends. I'd like to give her 10 stars - this was totally unexpected.

After being arrested for a dwi and being underage, I hired Betty to be my attorney. Explaining to her the messy situation of my case she made it clear that she was going to do everything she could to help me win. Betty was very honest with me and guided me through this process as someone who has never been in trouble with the law before. My case was very rare and complicated because I was being accused of a dwi. Betty had told me that she has never had a client that had a similar case as me. In the end she helped me win my case. We were able to prove that I was not the driver that night since I had two witnesses that were in the car the night of the arrest who were the designated drivers. The dwi was lowered to only a public intoxication ticket since I was drinking and was underage, and as well winning the drivers license hearing. I am so thankful for what Betty has done for me. Her many years of experience showed and I couldn't be where I am today without her help. I highly recommend you hire her for any criminal defense, dwi or dui case.

I used Jeff Kelly for a real estate transaction. First, in this world I would recommend getting a lawyer on the purchase contract. Jeff knows the "end game" as a lawyer which is invaluable. Real estate agents don't have anyone's interest in mind but their own and make a transaction difficult. Spend your money with Jeff as your agent. If you are in a transaction and get a "bad feeling" call Jeff. Real estate is big money and this is where your money is best spent.

Todd was originally referred over to us by a lawyer friend. Todd worked on expunging a completed case starting, and the correspondence started off well. After sending in payment and paperwork to his office on February 5th, I sent a follow up email 10 days later asking for an update. After a month of calling his office and not hearing anything back via email, on March 18th we received an update. After that things ran smooth and anytime I reached out by email he was quick to respond. It was stressful to not hear anything about the case for a month, and we weren't sure if it was even being worked on. I am however grateful that Todd was able to complete this for myself and my family, and was able to do it in a 90 day span.

So far Chris has been very responsive to my emails and following up with my questions. He seems to know quite a bit about "the system" and I am hopeful that my case will dissolve here quickly. He seems to truly care about my situation, and that itself is a breath of fresh air. Having an attorney that actually responds and acts like they really care about your situation is very comforting, even if they don't, but I believe he does. I wish I would've hired him from the get go but you can't hire who you don't know so I hope that my review gets his name out there so others can hire an attorney whom they know they can trust.

This lawyer is VERY rude, disrespectful and unprofessional. After a loooonngggggg time of going through a divorce with Chris McHam representing me, he has literally done nothing. He charges me for the mistakes that HE makes; and then they're not even correct- like misspelling my name and takes MONTHS to respond to an email and then only writes one sentence and charges me $100 when he didn't even address my concerns. He also doesn't answer the phone when called several times concerning important things. When I'm talking he tells me to "stop talking" and laughs - when I am addressing concerns- very disrespectful. DO NOT USE THIS ATTORNEY!!! He'll take your money and not do anything.

I paid an attorney service to have a ticket dismissed and he was the person they had take on my case. The ticket should have just been dismissed but the procecutor showed grainy video with audio that cut out important conversations with the officer as for me was not sufficient enough to peruse a trial but he didn’t argue that and he took it to trial. The trial was very short but he did not even try to defend my side of the case. Needless to say I was found guilty of the minor traffic infraction and had to pay a fine. If he had put a small amount of effort my case would have been easily dismissed or won. I’m also disappointed with the jury one of them being an attorney of law them self and knowing the law they found me guilty only because they believed the cop over me. I was not guilty of the infraction.

The judge wanted to send him away or extend him for three years and a 9 month treatment. Krista got it knocked down for one year probation and a 3 month treatment. Our family is greatly appreciated and I recommend her for everybody. Great job Krista and god bless you.

Krista represented me for a DWI. My situation was very very messy (other pending charges, new charges midway through case) somehow she was able to get me an excellent plea bargain that allowed me to keep my license, keep the DWI off my record and not serve any jail time. She comes recommend from a lawyer in my extended family that advised me Krista is who she would hire if she was in my situation.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
